What happened to the days when product management meant targeting a customer base, identifying specific needs, taking the time to build the right product, and growing marketshare though strong brand and quality satisfaction promotions? They are long gone. Several key dynamics have changed product management forever:

1. The rising complexity for products today to be competitive is escalating the engineering costs. Even outsourcing the development work has a price, and engineering resources in most companies are getting tighter. More and more tough decisions are made on the priorities of new products, most of which are great ideas that never will touch a customer.

2. The revolution of outbound marketing over the internet means virtually any company of any size any where in the world can compete for the attention of the customer. There are no barriers to entry here anymore.

3. Low cost development centers located internationally has shown quality control can vary greatly and production costs can escalate (have you noticed the frequency by which some of the biggest names in the electronics business are experiencing product recalls?)

One of the biggest reasons these changes create havoc in a company is that the product development process has not evolved at the same pace as the outbound marketing. Doing things even remotely the same old way is just not effective anymore. So what steps can companies take to regain product management efficiencies?

1. It starts with a revamped process. There are three critical questions that should be answered in order to justify spending precious resources to develop a product

Because products are so complex, and markets change so quickly, there is no longer enough time nor the right words to communicate clearly to anyone outside of the process all the nuances of a market opportunity. Key strategic decisions still must be made by upper management. But empowering the people executing the process is the most efficient way to ensure your product stays relevant. This includes integration of engineering resource allocations so that the process can continually assess, and reassess, the priorities of the engineering teams.

3. Build quality control into the development process. The days of shipping a new product to a dedicated quality center are long gone. That does not mean this should not be done. However, with the rising complexity of products and the distribution of development tasks across perhaps several engineering groups, a centralized QA team cannot be held responsible for having the knowledge and skills sets to identify and address detailed problems. Quality control has to now be an integral component to the development process. Design with quality in mind and the end result will be much better before it hits the QA team.

The ability to cope with the dynamism built into today’s market opportunities are the difference between successful products and lost leaders. An acute awareness and willingness to embrace the dynamics is the next evolution step after the tactical tasks that many companies have been undertaken (such as developing lower cost engineering centers world-wide, reducing the number of products being built, re-focusing core competencies, right sizing….)

The changes suggested here are not necessarily expensive or require massive shifts in resources or skills sets, or even the acquisition of new capital or skills. Simple but effective steps can make a big difference.

The moves increase pressure on the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, who has called an emergency meeting of the worldwide Anglican communion’s 38 primates in London next week to discuss the threatened schism .

Yesterday’s Dallas motion appealed to the primates to discipline the Episcopalian church (though in fact they have no power to do so), and guide the realignment of Anglicanism in north America. Observers in the mainstream Episcopalian church believe that, in practice, engineering a split in the US will be much more difficult than those at the conference have been led to believe. The church’s canon law vests all its buildings in the national body, and it holds all the pension funds; any who left might find themselves out in the cold, or facing years of litigation.

Some African and developing world dioceses want to declare themselves out of communion with the more liberal US and Canadian churches – even though these provide large proportions of their funding. Yesterday the US Episcopalian church denied it was considering cutting its $106,000 (£70,000) grant to the Council of Anglican Provinces in Africa (a third of its budget), following the election of the most outspoken critic of gays, Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria, to the organisation’s presidency.

The cardinal wrote to the conference: “I hasten to assure you of my heartfelt prayers for all those taking part in this convocation. The significance of your meeting is sensed far beyond [Dallas] and even in this city, from which St Augustine of Canterbury was sent to confirm and strengthen the preaching of Christ’s gospel in England … I pray God’s will may be done by all those who seek that unity in the truth, the gift of Christ himself.”

Such an intervention in another church is highly unusual, though less so by the standards of the ailing pontiff’s highly conservative court. The Vatican takes an even harder line than the evangelicals, issuing a document this year condemning homosexuality as evil and disordered. When Dr Williams made a visit to Rome last weekend, even though the Pope could hardly speak, he found breath to warn against any accommodation.

The letter will however also cause intakes of breath among some evangelical Anglicans still suspicious of Catholic good intentions, even though they may agree with the Vatican’s sentiments.

At a session on Wednesday lawyers warned the conference not to take precipitate unilateral action: “This is no time for Lone-Rangerism,” said one. Advice to dissident parishes in this land of litigation was, first, get a good lawyer and then only later to pray. The Rev Jan Nunley, spokeswoman for the national church, said: “I think people will go away from this conference feeling rather confused, expecting to see action for their money and not getting any for quite a while. You could say it was a case of the old Texas saying: All hat and no cattle.”

Bishop Frank Griswold, primate of the church, who supported Gene Robinson and will attend next week’s meeting in London, has thanked his bishops for their great grace in unsettling and uncertain days: “Whatever the outcome may be … I hope all of us might move beyond a spirit of condemnation and reaction.”

6 Documentary Film Making Tips From a Film University

If you want to do documentaries, David Hoffman is the man you want to learn from. Hoffman has over 40 years experience making documentaries.

Here are some of his most helpful tips.

1. Eliminate what doesn’t enhance the story and exagerate what does.

The way Hoffman explains this is simple. When doing a piece on history, the real truth is that a lot of the details are boring. The reason that a good historical piece is so exciting is that the creator focuses on the details that are exciting and interesting and leave out the mundane stuff.

Watch any movie ever made on a historical event and you’ll see what I mean. It’s almost as if they take the entire section of history and condense it down to one or two main points…leaving out all the stuff that will put you to sleep.

In other words, if it’s not absolutely critical to the story, leave it out.

2. Recognize your strengths and weaknesses.

This is excellent advice. The way Hoffman explains it, not everybody is good at every little thing. Some people are good at writing, some at directing. If you can’t write, don’t try. Get somebody who is a good writer if your strength is in directing.

By putting together a team of experts, you end up with the best movie possible.

3. Don’t over criticize yourself.

This is a common mistake that many beginning film makers make. They nit pick about every little thing that they do. Hoffman says you need to just jump into the fire and do it. Go with your gut. Some things will work and some won’t. But don’t censor yourself during the process too much. Let the ideas just come and have confidence in what you’re doing.

4. It’s okay to be nervous. Be nervous.

I love the way Hoffman explains this. He says that when people tell you there is nothing to be nervous about, they’re wrong. There is a lot to be nervous about. Why? Because what you do matters. And it’s going to matter to somebody who is watching your movie 50 years from now.

5. Casting your crew is as important as who is in front of the camera.

This is related to what he said about knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Movies are not just made by a director. They are made by actors, lighting men and an assortment of people. It is important to realize that your movie is only as strong as your weakest link.

6. Tell YOUR Truth.

This was probably the best part of the interview and I’ll try to condense it as best as I can. Hoffman made a movie about slums. He could have portrayed the person living in the slums as a hero, going to work at a minimum wage job to support her 4 children. That would have been a truth.
But it wasn’t his truth.

Hoffman decided to focus instead on how the person didn’t keep the house clean, hit the children, and so on…focusing on all the negative aspects. After all, they were just as true.

Point he’s making is this. If you’re doing a documentary, you don’t have to include all the facts just because they are true. You can focus on JUST the facts that tell the truth that you want to convey.

While selling, research more information about the price and potential buyers. Be patient and don’t make a haste in selling the business, otherwise you will regret, if you get a better deal later on.
