How To Improve Your Chances Of Getting A Scholarship

One of the first things you should do before applying for scholarships is to verify whether or not you qualify to be a visible minority or have a disability. This is because there are a large number of scholarships that target these individuals. Of course, not everyone is a minority, and for the majority of people other criteria are looked at to determine who is elidgeable for a scholarship.

1. How Are Scholarships Awarded?

There isn’t any specific formula used to determine who gets scholarships and who doesn’t. One thing, however, is for sure – far more people are applying for scholarships than there are scholarships available to give out. For this reason, many scholarships set up criteria that must be reached as a bare miniumum.

Other volunteer organizations Many organizations offer scholarships or award grants to students whose background or chosen field overlaps the field of the organization. For example, local chapters of professional societies may help the studies of exceptionally distinguished students of the region. Similarly, charity organizations may offer help, especially if the late parent of the student was a member of the organization. (E.g. masonic lodge might help the orphan of a lodge brother.) However, this kind of scholarships are mostly random.

School Old, well-known schools have often been endowed with scholarship funds.

University Old, well-established universities may have funds, used to finance the studies of extremely talented students of little means. However, to be eligible for them, the student must usually belong to some special category or be among the nation’s best. However, universities have information available on scholarships and grants, possibly even internship opportunities.

PSAT/NMSQT. In the United States, students are offered the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT test, usually in their Junior year in (high school). Not only does it help them to prepare for the SAT later on, but National Merit Scholarship programs are determined, in the first step, by the scores received on the PSAT/NMSQT test. Some private scholarship programs require the applicants to take the PSAT.

2. Criteria

- Are you a minority of African North American, Hispanic or Native North American descent?
- You must be a U.S or Canadian citizen or permanant resident. You can also be a U.S student with a Visa or a Canadian student.
- An application form must be submitted

3. What Do Schools Look For The Most?

- You must have a GPA of at least 3.0
- Students with 4.0 GPA get looked at first
- A Math SAT score of at least 600
- Completed the courses in Calculus
- Low family income

4. How Is The Amount Of The Scholarship Determined?

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need and individual merit. There are limits set up by a committe to ensure persons do not end up getting exorbant amounts of money.

America’s Self-publishing ‘miracle’

The word “bestseller” doesn’t mean too much nowadays. “Self-published bestseller” does. William P Young’s SPBS, The Shack, has been the “buzz book” in the US for the past 18 months. Young (known as “Paul”, like the apostle) is an Oregon salesman with an interest in web design. He composed The Shack as a gift for his children at Christmas 2005, something that would explain the mysterious ways in which God works.

He typeset the story on his computer and had it bound at the local print shop. His two pastors (kicking in a start-up fund of $300) encouraged him to self-publish. Registering themselves as Windblown Media, they dispatched copies from the Youngs’ family garage. Lots and lots of copies, as the months passed. Word of mouth became word of web. The Shack was blogged and hyped by Christian radio into the bestseller lists. Its American sales are verging on 2m.

The plot is simple. God takes exception to little girls getting murdered by serial killers and posts a bereaved parent a note on the subject. “He” cares. A huge number of readers testify on the web that The Shack brought them closer to their Creator. And, perhaps, their mailman.

Christian fiction is big in the US. In bookshops, that section is usually larger than science fiction (although regular Christian publishers turned down The Shack on the grounds that it was too “edgy”). Young himself calls his bestsellerdom a “miracle”, clearly discerning the kind of assistance you can’t expect from the average publicity department.

Is The Shack the Blair Witch Project of the modern book world? Does it demonstrate that with modern e-tools literary talent can find a way around the cumbersome apparatus of the publishing industry? Is it a portent? Probably not. The famous novelists who have self-published could supply a well-rounded literary education: Mark Twain, DH Lawrence, Anais Nin, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Margaret Atwood, et al. They are proudly listed on self-publishing guru John Kremer’s “self-publishing hall of fame” (bookmarket.com/selfpublish.html). But, like Paul Young, these novelists typically did it at the break-in stage of their careers. Once inside, they signed up quite happily to the mainstream commercial book world.

The Shack, which arrives on our shores this week, is not, alas, being published here with a £150 handout from Radio 4′s Thought for the Day team. It is published by Hodder and Stoughton, in an initial print run of 25,000. They won’t be dispatching it from Mr Hodder’s garage.

A Day in a Nurse’s Life-What to Expect in Day Surgery Center?

A ‘same day surgery’ unit usually consists of a combination of pre-op and post-op recovery. Those working here, such as nurses and surgeons, possess strong medical skills, as they are required to prepare patients for a variety of surgical procedures on a daily basis. And just like the name of the center suggests, the staff helps the patients recover so that they can go home the same day as their procedure. And if you are a new nurse, coping might take a little bit of time and effort on your part.

First off, as the new nurse on the block, you must already possess a strong knowledge regarding “phase 2” recovery. At the same time, you must have the necessary skills to assist in the minor procedure room, and care for recovering patients, children and adults alike.

A typical day for you consists of doing vitals, passing medicine, changing dressings, making beds, and other tasks. As you run these tasks every day, you will be able to learn the basics of your job, while being able to build on them. Of course, as a novice, you are expected to seek help from time to time. Don’t worry, because the Head Nurse will even appreciate you asking. It shows that you are serious about your job, and that you are willing to be trained. The influence of the ones in charge will hopefully instill a sense of professionalism and teamwork, and you are expected to absorb this like a sponge. During this time, try to learn all about the tangible qualities a nurse has to have. Being skillful behind those landau scrubs is needed, but you have to learn to do your tasks with kindness and empathy. After all, patient care always comes first. That’s why it is expected that you approach patients on an individual basis. Always try to put them at ease, and assure them that they will receive quality care before and after the procedure.

Inside the surgery room, always expect the unexpected. To get you through the most difficult days, simply bank on teamwork. Things could get pretty hectic, but good teamwork among staff members can certainly make things easier. You have little to worry about anyway, as a day surgery center is loaded with the best nurses, techs, and surgeons—ensuring that ‘patient care’ is held to the highest of standards.

Your work routine at a day surgery center is different from day to day. One day, you’re simply drawing blood work—the next day, you may find yourself closely working with the surgeons. The next week, on the other hand, might simply be spent giving pre-op meds and making beds. So always keep your eyes peeled. You never know when you might be called to get a patient ready for the operating room.

At the end of the day, your efforts will surely be appreciated by the patients and their families. And of course, the day surgery center will greatly value having you in its staff.
