President Obama – “Your Ego Is Writing Checks Your Body Can’t Cash”

This is a classic line, from the movie Top Gun, which holds true even today. Whether it’s a quest for financial gain or political glory, the results are the same. The Wall Street big wigs and President Obama are writing checks they just can’t cash.

Wall Street’s non-existent view of a healthy economy and a lust for quick profits led the United States into one of the worst economic downturns in history. Wall Street dreamed up all sorts of investment schemes in order to make large profits. To Wall Street, it didn’t matter the losers would be the American people and their retirement funds.

We Americans have not seen the end of Wall Street’s destruction. Credit Default Swaps (CDS) are a contract in which an individual pays for protection in case of a default of an event. Unlike insurance, CDS are derivatives and therefore priced based on financial models. The CDS market around the world has grown exponentially over the last decade. To put it into perspective, the housing market is roughly $7 trillion in size and the CDS market is estimated to be near $50 trillion. Should the CDS market collapse, our economy will reach lows never seen in its 234 year history.

President Obama came onto the World stage with an agenda and the President has not veered from it once. To admit that his wishes are to help others, there is no doubt. To his timing, it couldn’t be worse. We’re coming off one of the worst economic down turns in our country’s history. We’re experiencing unemployment rates near ten percent. Mr. President, this is not the time to be focused on an agenda that was put together a decade ago.

Now is the time to put all those charity plans aside and create a new plan. A plan no-one would have imagined necessary even five years ago. Today, we need to focus on getting capital to our small businesses. Small business is the engine that drives employment in the United States. Our Congress has invested way too much time on National Health Care Reform instead of focusing on the economy.

Banking, in the United States, is broken. Bankers have discovered there are more lucrative options to put our money into such as hedge funds and CDS. We need to find a way to make lending to small business more appealing to bankers. We need to distinguish between acts of gambling and good business practices. Placing our bank deposits into hedge funds and CDS is gambling with other people’s money. It’s time to get the American engine turned on and begin to grow employment.

Mr. President, now that the Health Care bill has passed, why can’t we push back the implementation until a constructive mile marker is reached? Maybe we can set unemployment below seven percent as the mile marker to begin spending on Health Care? Maybe we should try and reach a certain amount of lending to small business as the mile marker? Now is not the time to be asking businesses to take a charge for health care. Heath Care Reform will require AT&T to take a $1 billion charge; Caterpillar – $100 million; 3M – $350 million, etc. This will have the opposite effect of a true economic stimulus plan. We’ve reached a point where we’re finally getting some footing, why are you pulling the rug out from under us now?

Under the guidance of nursing and medical staff, certified nursing assistants are responsible for providing care and performing routine tasks. The task’s they are asked to perform vary from patient care to administrative duties. Patient care involves helping patients eat, dress, and bathe. They can also be responsible for taking a patient’s temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate. Often times they are also responsible for serving meals, answering phones, making beds, and cleaning rooms. Finally a certified nursing assistant can help other members of the staff by setting up equipment and delivering supplies to specific rooms. Because of their skills, they are often times employed in long term care units, where people require help with their basic needs.

Certified nursing jobs can place a physical strain on a person. Often times they are on their feet for hours at a time, with a full schedule of work. Many times they will have to lift a patient to help them stand, and provide them with stability as they walk. The nurses may also be responsible for bathing a patient, and cleaning a patient’s room. Many nurses take satisfaction in the fact that their working is making people’s lives easier, and more comfortable.

States have different requirements for certified nursing assistant jobs, some states require certification, while many states rely on job site training. Many jobs only require a high school diploma or equivalent before a person may take a job as a certified nursing assistant. Training is available in high school, technical schools, nursing facilities, or community colleges. Typically courses will cover nutrition, anatomy and physiology, infection control, and resident rights. Other courses covered include helping patients eat, breathe, and care for themselves.

Depending on the job, some employers offer instructional classes for nursing assistants, while others rely on training provided by licensed nurses, or other experienced nursing assistants. Training could last anywhere from a few days to a few month, with carious lectures and workshops. People seeking a certified nursing job may also have to pass a background inspection before they are able to care for patients.

Unfortunately there are few opportunities for certified nurses to advance their careers. Nurses typically need certification, or other formal training to pursue other options in health care. Many nurses choose to go back to school and become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), registered nurse, or a medical assistant. The job does provide many high school and college students with experience, and provide them with an insight into the field of health care.

The market for Certified Nursing Assistant Jobs is expected to grow by 19% between 2008 and 2018. Many are employed by hospitals, while the rest work in care facilities, government agencies, outpatient care centers, or finding employment with families needing an assistant for an elderly member.

Checks In The Mail…..Or So You Thought

Imagine writing a check payable to Visa for $100, placing it in an envelope and walking it and various other bills to the mailbox at the end of the driveway for the letter carrier to pick up.

Later, you receive a VISA statement showing payment past due and a late charge. Then later, you learn that the phone and utility company hadn’t received their payments either.

A visit to the bank reveals your check to Visa as well as the others, had been cashed, however, the dollar amount had been changed. Further investigation revealed the checks were made out to and cashed by an individual using false identification.

How could this have happened? The criminals stole the mail from the mailbox and used a technique known as check washing. They erased the ink on the checks using chemicals found in common household cleaning products and increased the dollar amount payable to themselves under assumed names.

According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service certain parts of the country are seeing an increase in “volume” mail thefts, particularly in Phoenix, Arizona, and portions of California and Texas. Volume attacks occur when someone steals the mail from neighborhood delivery and collection box units, or from blue Postal Service collection boxes, postal vehicles or apartment house mail panels.

What’s alarming is it only takes one stolen item- an outgoing bill, an incoming checking account statement- to give a thief the information he or she needs to steal your identity.

The general public gives little thought to their mail. Most people perceive bills-incoming and outgoing- as having no perceived value. However, by stealing an outgoing bill payment or incoming credit card application, credit card replacement or newly printed checks, a thief can steal your identity.

Thieves generally target mailboxes at the end or the beginning of the month when bills are paid. Some law enforcement officials have also noticed mail theft increases during the Christmas holiday season when cash mailings increase.

The type of mailbox that you utilize can determine your vulnerability. Cluster mailboxes, such as the type found in new subdivisions and apartment complexes are attractive to thieves because one theft can produce numerous pieces of mail.

Suburbs also get hit hard because they have rural type mailboxes on the street, which are easily accessed by someone driving a car or walking up and down the street. A red flag on a mailbox is an open invitation to identity thieves.

In some areas, the increase in mail theft has been linked to methamphetamine addiction. The addicts steal mail to get checks and credit card account numbers to support their drug habits.

It appears methamphetamine addicts have turned to mail and identity theft because they are non-violent and non-drug related crimes with lenient penalties. There is also less chance of apprehension.

The following safeguards will help minimize your chances of becoming a victim of mail theft:

• Avoid sending cash in the mail. Use checks or money orders.
• Have your post office hold your mail while you are on vacation or absent from your home for an extended period if time.
• Remove your mail from the mailbox as soon as it is delivered if possible.
• Don’t leave outgoing checks or paid bills in your residential mailbox. Take your mail to the post office or drop it in a U.S Postal Service mailbox. Also consider paying bills electronically, a lot of financial institutions now offer this option.
• Purchase a residential mailbox with a locking mechanism or install a mail slot to your existing door.
• Consider starting a neighborhood watch program to help keep an eye on mailboxes and report suspected mail thieves.
• Contact your credit card company immediately if your card has expired and you have not yet received a replacement or you do not receive your monthly billing statement.
• When you order new checks, do not have them sent to your residence. Pick them up at the bank instead. Or, have them sent registered mail so you have to sign for them personally.
• Shred or tear up canceled checks. If you need to save them, make sure you put them in a secure place.
• Don’t leave gaps and spaces around dollar signs and numbers, as the least little space can give criminals room to change the amount. Also fill space in the “payable to” line. This can be accomplished by drawing a solid line in blank spaces.
• Consider ordering checks with extra security features that discourage tampering.

LPN Nursing Jobs

To become a licensed practical nurse potential students are required to complete a LPN program, which takes approximately one year to finish. Students are taught how to take patient’s medical information, take vital signs and to collect lab samples. Depending on the type of facility they work in they may be required to look after newborns and administer medications as well. LPN’s work directly under registered nurses and Doctors and they supervise cna’s and aide’s.

Training courses are taught at community colleges, trade schools and online training courses. A big part of LPN training includes working in a medical facility for a designated amount of time. Each graduate is required by their state to pass the NCLEX-PN exam before they are allowed to gain meaningful employment. Each state’s requirements vary. A license is given to those who pass the exam and they are able to practice what they have learned in a medical facility.

LPN’s are primarily responsible for checking on patients after a physician or RN has seen them initially. Their job description includes lots of rewarding and helpful activities such as making sure immobile patients are rotated regularly so they do not get bedsores. They also make sure that a patient hygienic needs are taken care of and that wounds are properly dressed and changed often. They usually speak to a patient’s family to offer guidance and show family members how to properly care for their ill loved one. This may include teaching them how to administer medication and the appropriate dosage necessary or how to properly dress wounds and change bandages.

Most LPN nursing jobs are in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics in some cases adult day care centers or assisted living facilities as well. Patients see LPN’s on a daily basis and develop bonds with them over time. Unlike other nurses LPN’s are skilled in a variety of medical practices and must be flexible and think on their feet. LPN’s wear many hats that may include filing medical records behind a desk to feeding infants in the nursery room. Each state is different an LPN nursing jobs may require different job duties from other states but the one thing LPN’s have most in common is their close contact with patients.
