How Does Solar Energy Work?

Many people today are trying to save money on their energy bills and one of the more popular ways is through using solar energy. How does solar energy work?

Energy from the sun in the form of heat and light is abundantly available to everyone on Earth, even in places that do not get a lot of a sun. Did you know that the Earth receives more energy from the sun in an hour than our entire population can use in an entire year? With all that clean, renewable energy that is coming from the sun every day, it is worthwhile to figure out a way to use it.

Active Solar

There are two different types of solar energy that can be used to power our homes and daily lives. One is active solar energy, which works through solar panels, which are set up with the use of photovoltaic cells. These cells are linked together in order to produce electricity.

How much electrical output they produce depends on a few factors. One of them is how many cells are linked together in a panel, and how many panels are being used.

The energy from the sun comes in the form of direct current, DC, instead of the alternating current, AC, that is used in your home. For this reason you will need a way to convert the energy. The simplest solution is to buy a power inverter, which convert the sun’s energy into usable AC elecricity. Another option is to convert your household’s electrical needs to DC power, although this is in most cases impractical especially in existing homes.

Thermal Solar Energy

There is another form of active solar power that uses thermal energy from the sun to heat the water in your home. Devices that circulate and pump the water help to keep it warm. Depending on where you live, solar power can heat water up to sixty degrees or more. While this may not be ideal for taking a shower, it can be effective for dish washing or even doing your laundry. Solar power for heating water can cut your water heating bills substantially, and can be used in combination with solar electricity.

Passive Solar

Passive solar energy uses the power of the sun without the use of any mechanical devices. When you go out on a sunny day, you feel the warm sun’s rays, and this principle is really the same for heating your home. A passive solar home has south facing windows and uses building materials that absorb the sun’s rays and then dissipates the heat into your home efficiently. Passive solar can also be used to heat water in our home.

Using Residential Solar Energy

Solar electricity is a great alternative to powering your home with standard power grids. It is already being used in a variety of residential, as well as business applications world wide. There are many different ways you can get a home solar power system, including DIY solar power kits that come complete with diagrams and materials you need to build your own solar power systems for very little money.

You can also find solar energy professionals that will come to your home, assess your needs, and do all the work for you. There are even ways that you can get used solar panels for free, or through solar power grants or renewable energy programs in your area.

You can run your home on solar energy even when there is little or no sun. Using batteries to store excess energy, you can draw from them during the days when there is simply not enough sun to be effective.

Many Options for Using Solar Energy

Some people also use solar energy in combination with other alternative power sources, like wind turbines, or even magnetic generators. Not only can it save you a great deal of money on your electric bill, in some cases you can actually get completely off the grid, and not even have a bill at all.

New technologies are being developed to help make solar energy more affordable and available to more people. Even if you’re not able to convert your entire home to solar power, you can now use solar powered battery chargers, solar yard lights, solar appliances and more. Each small thing that you do to save energy will also help our environment and help to make our beautiful Earth a better place for our children and grandchildren.

Searching For College Scholarships

If you have just graduated from high school or have been thinking of going back to college to finish your course but have no financial resources, then, you must consider applying for a college scholarship. So if you don’t know where to go, here re the places and ways to look into:

The Internet

The internet has something for everyone. Even for you for those who need help to finance their college education. In the internet, there are sites that offer college scholarships. These sites are either your local government, College or University itself, some non-government institutions, or a collective people who gathers finances to help someone like you. The internet also has some helpful articles to make your college scholarship application easier and make the scholarship grant closer to your hand.

The High School Academic Guidance Counselor

Before the end of the school term, most colleges and universities contact or go to high both public and private schools to offer scholarships for graduating students. Usually, the academic guidance counselor takes hold of the application forms. All you have to do is to approach the office and ask for scholarship forms.

Colleges and Universities

If you excel in athletics, academics, art, and stage, colleges and universities give you special scholarships. Inquiring for this would be a good way to start. Most of the times though, these types of college scholarships are either automatically given to a certain students or selected through a roster of students.

Or, if you are not that athletic or not that excellent in academics, colleges and universities provide financial aids. These aids will slash off some percentage of the total price you have to pay for the year. Both the financial aid and scholarship will continue provided that you can maintain a certain average.

The Local Government

One of the best college scholarship grants that are both reliable and efficient is from the local government. Since local governments allocate funds for financing a certain number of students in a year, it is almost assured that you get one of the slots. Added to this, a government scholar has the privilege to immediately land a job after graduation. And this usually comes with the scholarship contract.

Institutions and Corporations

There are institutions and corporations that offer scholarships for students with both academic skills and financial problems. Look into this. Search of institutions and corporations that offer scholarships you can apply for.

Got a Great Business Idea? You May Have More Resources than You Think.

Do you have a great idea for a business but don’t know where to start? You may be surrounded by help and not know it!

Starting your own business has suddenly become the hot thing; perhaps it’s the relative insecurity of jobs now as opposed to a decade or two ago, or perhaps it comes from the need to supplement your regular income, or a desire to be your own boss. Maybe it’s that the government has finally figured out that 85 percent of newly created jobs come from small businesses, and not giant corporations. For whatever reason, suddenly encouragement to start a business of your own is everywhere.

One type of organization that has sprung up in every state in the US in the past ten years is the micro credit lending system. Backed by a combination of government and business funding, the organization, which is patterned after a model originating in Bangladesh, gives micro loans ranging from $500 to $5000 to start-up businesses. Small clusters of five to seven people form their own lending groups, study a manual which teaches them the basics of business finances, and then submit loan applications to the group for approval. Each group approves the loans for the individual members of the group, and monitors the progress in payments made on the loan. This is a great opportunity for someone who needs a very small amount of start-up cash, some business knowledge, and a lot of moral support.

Another type of support that has been around for years is the mentoring program run by the Small Business Administration. Retired businessmen and -women from various business backgrounds volunteer to advise new business owners as they set up and promote their businesses. The SBA also periodically offers classes in starting your own business; if there is an SBA office in your area, there is probably a class offered from time to time.

Don’t forget to check your local college for course offerings. Classes can range from standard fare like bookkeeping and accounting (including using computerized accounting programs like QuickBooks) to personnel management, business computer classes, and more. Some colleges even offer entrepreneurial resource programs with a wealth of classes covering every aspect of business development.

There’s lots of advice out there for the budding entrepreneur if you go look for it. Take your business idea and hunt down the resources you need; and good luck!
