College Grants and Scholarships

Do you wonder how to get college grants and scholarships? Do you need funding to make your hopes of any college education or your dreams of going to a specific school a reality? If so, you need to know that college grants and scholarships exist for just this reason.

Many students think that they are limited in their chances to get college grants and scholarships because their parents make a lot of money or have equity in their homes. Sometimes, the parents are not able or willing to shell out the big bucks that colleges charge. But, you would be surprised to find out that the overwhelming majority of students do not pay the college’s “sticker price.” This is where college grants and scholarships come into play.

College grants and scholarships help students make up the difference between what they can afford to pay and what the college charges in tuition and fees. In an era when parents are increasingly unable to help pay for a university education as their stock portfolios and home equity shrinks, college grants and scholarships can help make up the gap.

A scholarship is generally a merit based award. For instance, the most famous scholarship is probably the athletic scholarship where a student gets a full ride including tuition, room and board in exchange for playing on a school’s sports team. But other scholarships exist as well. Colleges try to put together the best overall class and they use scholarships to entice students to their campus.

Students with high grades or test scores, significant community service or leadership, or certain artistic skills often are the recipients of institutional scholarships.

Scholarships are also granted by community organizations such as the Rotary Club, businesses, and foundations. While the requirements vary from award to award, they always feature some level of merit.

Sometimes scholarships have a need-based component, but they are usually based in large part on merit.

Grants are also free money. Unlike scholarships, the distinguishing feature of grants is that they are based on need. While there are general qualifications such as a minimum grade point average, grants are awarded to make up the difference between what the college charges and what the student can pay.

Sometimes the university itself steps in and helps the student with a grant. Other times, the state or federal government makes a grant. Perhaps the most famous grant is the Pell Grant which the federal government awards to students coming from the lowest quartile of the economic spectrum. These awards are for up to $4000.

College grants and scholarships are different from other types of aid because there is no work involved and they do not have to be paid back.

Work-study grants, for instance, are contingent on the student working a 10 to 20 hour a week job on campus. Universities prefer to hire students receiving work-study to fill their student assistant positions because the federal government foots much of the bill.

Loans have to be paid back once a student graduates from college. Because they are packaged as part of the overall student aid budget, many students do not realize what a hardship it will be to pay these loans back after they graduate. They leave college with tens of thousands of dollars in student loans that must be paid back on an entry level salary.

That’s why it is best to go to a school where the college grants and scholarships make up the bulk of the award package.

Doing Your Homework: How to Get the Facts on a Small Business Franchise

Public relations play a major role in today’s business world. Each year, businesses spend hundreds of millions of dollars, paying highly skilled men and women who know how to make everything from hamburgers to airlines look as good as possible in the public eye. It’s not that most businesses, products, and services aren’t as outstanding as they present themselves to be, but it can be hard to tell which representations are most accurate. So when a hopeful entrepreneur browses through a list of franchises and finds that many work at home businesses appear too good to be true, he may have a difficult time deciding which one to choose. That is, unless he has resources at his disposal to confirm that these business opportunities are legitimate. And as it turns out, though many potential franchisees don’t realize it, such resources are available; a person just has to know where to look.

The Franchise Disclosure Document

Because it can be so hard to determine a viable home based business from a total scam, all franchisors, by law, are required to have a Franchise Disclosure Document (or FDD) available to any prospective franchisee. It provides a complete overview of everything about the business, its goals, its history, and its practices that anyone could ever possibly want to know. In fact, a quick jaunt over to the Federal Trade Commission’s website shows exactly how precise and complete a disclosure the government expects from all franchises: they provide a 150-page Franchise Rule document to clarify exactly what information a business must supply in order to comply with the law. If there is anything fishy about the franchise you’ve got your eye on, the FDD will reveal it to both you and the government.

The SBA Franchise Registry

Another easy way to spot potential franchise trouble before it hatches is to check out the Small Business Administration’s Franchise Registry. The SBA is a very helpful branch of the US government that specializes in supporting small businesses, including franchises, in any way they can, and one such way is by providing financial backing to small businesses that otherwise couldn’t get off the ground. In the case of a franchise, the SBA asks for company information to ensure that the business model is a sound one, there is a history of success, and future success is fairly certain before they provide the financial support. What this practice has inadvertently produced is the Franchise Registry: a list of all the franchise companies that have already submitted their businesses for financial support when a new franchisee starts out. If a franchise is on the list, then the government has given it their stamp of approval and their trust, and so can you.

Learn From Other People

This seems like the most straightforward way to get information, and it truly is. If you want to find out what Adventures in Advertising is really like, talk to one of their franchisees. There is no one who will know better what the strengths and weaknesses of the franchise are, how effectively the business runs, and whether or not it’s a worthy investment. Of course, talking with only one DVDNow dvd rental kiosk franchisee may not give you a true perspective on things; because if one person has a negative opinion simply because a work from home vending business just wasn’t a good fit for him. But if you talk to a dozen franchisees, you should be able to figure out exactly what your future franchise will be like. You don’t have to stop at franchisees, the Better Business Bureau can also offer you information on the franchise you’re looking at, based on the reviews of concerned consumers. If, in their database, the BBB has 200 negative consumer reports in regard to the internet business that’s recently caught your eye as a potential opportunity, you may want to rethink the choice, because that many unique negative reports probably means there is some merit to the complaints.

When you’re looking at franchise businesses, there is no such thing as over-researching. Truly, most opportunities that you’ll find, especially through franchise brokers, are trustworthy businesses. But even if research doesn’t unearth a huge moral or professional flaw in the infrastructure of the business, it might just tell you some things about the way they practically run that won’t mesh well with your personality, lifestyle, and goals. There are plenty of factors to consider when starting a new business, and any knowledge you can get along the way will inevitably be helpful.

The End of the Beginning

With President Bush at the table, the “spin masters” who put a victorious gloss on all his actions had little need to lower expectations concerning the outcome of the G8 meeting at Gleneagles – agreement by the G8 to debt relief is a major event. But we should not be fooled; much of the debt would not have been repaid in any case. More debt relief – encompassing more countries – is needed, but debt relief should be viewed as just a start. As Britain itself has pointed out, developing countries need more assistance and a fairer international trade regime.

Even after the increases in annual assistance promised by Bush in Scotland, the US will still be giving less than a quarter of its commitment of 0.7% of GDP. Of course, not all foreign-aid money is well spent. But the aim should be to improve the efficiency of government, to make sure we get the most value for what we spend. In this there have been marked improvements in recent years. For example, the World Bank has been allocating more of its money to countries with a proven track record in spending money well. It has been exploring new ways of “delivering” aid, sometimes using state and local governments where that appears more effective.

The IMF warns about “Dutch disease” problems, when an influx of foreign exchange drives up the local currency’s exchange rate, making it difficult to create jobs in the export sector or to protect jobs against cheaper foreign imports. Countries need to rely on themselves and mobilise domestic resources (although the IMF’s frequent insistence on tight monetary and fiscal policies often makes this more difficult). But there continues to be a huge need for imported goods – medicines to promote health, and technology to reduce the knowledge gap between developing countries and the rest of the world.

In any case, not much weight should be given to the IMF’s statistical studies of the impact of foreign aid on growth. Different studies, with different countries, different techniques and different years, yield markedly different results. One set of studies, for instance, showed that aid does make a difference in countries with good governance and sound macroeconomic policies.

Historically, much foreign aid was provided not to promote development but to purchase friendship, especially during the cold war. When the west gave money to Mobutu it knew the funds were going to Swiss bank accounts rather than the people of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). The money worked – keeping Zaire on the side of the west.

Of course, Mobutu’s boundless corruption challenges us to be thoughtful about foreign aid. Some governments have demonstrated a better capacity than others for using funds well. In countries where governments are deficient there are often alternative ways of providing assistance, including NGOs.

Global support for “making poverty history” shows how the issue of third-world poverty has finally struck a responsive chord. Debt relief is a good beginning. But that is all it is.

Small Business Networks: Getting Past Small Business Networking Myopia

<img src="http://www.buzzle.com/img/articleImages/591627-6med.jpg" width="310" height="258" alt="Small Business Networks: Getting Past Small Business Networking Myopia" class="ImgBorder"

Many small businesses mistakenly think that they’re too small to cost-justify a “real” client/server small business network. However, because small businesses want, and in most cases, need, the same technology tools as their larger competitors, deploying a peer-to-peer network doesn’t usually make small business sense (except for the tiniest small offices).

Don’t Let Clients Underestimate Technology Requirements

When purchase decisions are based solely on the initial price, small businesses tend to underestimate their technology requirements. If your client or prospect requires a secure, reliable, scalable and flexible technology backbone, the client or prospect needs a “real”, dedicated server for their small business network.

As virtual CIO, part of your responsibility is to see that “sound” decisions are made. So don’t let your small business clients invest in “dead end” peer-to-peer small business networking solutions that are difficult to support and expensive to upgrade.

If your clients value their data, productivity, uptime and technology investment, a “real” server should be a “no brainer”.

The Bottom Line about Small Business Networks

In much the same way that every home begins with a solid foundation, your clients’ small business networks need a secure, scalable, rock-solid file and printer-sharing infrastructure before you can start adding value-added “bells and whistles”.

Searching For College Scholarships

If you have just graduated from high school or have been thinking of going back to college to finish your course but have no financial resources, then, you must consider applying for a college scholarship. So if you don’t know where to go, here re the places and ways to look into:

The Internet

The internet has something for everyone. Even for you for those who need help to finance their college education. In the internet, there are sites that offer college scholarships. These sites are either your local government, College or University itself, some non-government institutions, or a collective people who gathers finances to help someone like you. The internet also has some helpful articles to make your college scholarship application easier and make the scholarship grant closer to your hand.

The High School Academic Guidance Counselor

Before the end of the school term, most colleges and universities contact or go to high both public and private schools to offer scholarships for graduating students. Usually, the academic guidance counselor takes hold of the application forms. All you have to do is to approach the office and ask for scholarship forms.

Colleges and Universities

If you excel in athletics, academics, art, and stage, colleges and universities give you special scholarships. Inquiring for this would be a good way to start. Most of the times though, these types of college scholarships are either automatically given to a certain students or selected through a roster of students.

Or, if you are not that athletic or not that excellent in academics, colleges and universities provide financial aids. These aids will slash off some percentage of the total price you have to pay for the year. Both the financial aid and scholarship will continue provided that you can maintain a certain average.

The Local Government

One of the best college scholarship grants that are both reliable and efficient is from the local government. Since local governments allocate funds for financing a certain number of students in a year, it is almost assured that you get one of the slots. Added to this, a government scholar has the privilege to immediately land a job after graduation. And this usually comes with the scholarship contract.

Institutions and Corporations

There are institutions and corporations that offer scholarships for students with both academic skills and financial problems. Look into this. Search of institutions and corporations that offer scholarships you can apply for.

The Story Behind Why Women are Likely Candidate for Individual Government Grants

Stories and headlines about women most likely to avail government grants are proliferating everywhere, which might prompt men to cry out for gender bias. Although this will also come as stereotyping women to be a damsel in distress, an image long associated to them, yet this is still a welcome relief for women across the country. Why? Let me give you a hindsight, statistic show, not only in the United States but worldwide, that there are more women than men, so if we factor out how many women living in poverty, whether single, married or as a single parent, the number will be staggering compared to men.

This could be the principle behind why special attention is certain to the female sector in many of the government’s grants program. In fact, non-profit organizations whose main purpose is to provide assistance to women such as training them to set up business ventures, is also rubbed off with this special attention for getting government grants. To put it simply, when this sector is empowered to allow them to earn and make money by either employment or as an entrepreneur, this will lead to a sound economic atmosphere for a country; try to visualize this in your mind.

So when women are in danger of financial mishaps, such as debts due to student loan, mortgage problem by a single mother and other relative situations, the government is more understanding and welcoming to this gender. Grants may not be in the form of awarding money for debt relief, but counseling and preparing for bail-out package proposals, will be closely assisted by certain government agencies like the US Small Business Administration. Likewise, the said agency will also refer financially beleaguered women to non-profit organizations to avail free training services to ensure sustainable solutions from financial problems.

In a nutshell, a woman is actually government’s favorite gender, besides, there are more female voters than the mail, so they might as well build up strong followers from this sector, where such government program will be appreciated more, because (gasps) women are generally grateful than men. So feminists out there, carry on!

The Obama Administration Should Also Identify a Government Grant for the Gay Community

The gay community of the country is probably perplexed why there are no government grants aimed at debt relief that targets them, specifically. Like, the absence of media highlights on grants aimed for men, same can be said also for gays. Being gay is a matter of personal lifestyle, it has nothing to do with legality or whatever, yet discrimination is evident.

This accusing statement may be startling to the government. However, let us try counting how many governments funded programs existed that target this sector. Let’s see, okay none! Take, for instance, there are scholarship grants for women, free training for women and single mothers, the list can go on.

On the other hand, there are only issues, negative issues concerning gays. Just like the concerns on gay presence in the military, much ado over nothing. Why couldn’t government come with specific government grants aimed at debt relief that targets gay citizens? In this manner, such as choice of lifestyle need not be hidden just to be treated equally.

It may be important also to the gay community that a government program is aimed specifically for them. This would somehow show that the country has to move on from the stereotype of a gay citizens’ capability. It would be like one big Hollywood country: fun, exciting and productive.

If the government points out that everybody has the right to avail, if eligible, it’s still vague. This is not enough. A clear cut message should come across to everyone, that there is a government grant aimed at debt relief for every sector. The list could start with; men, women, single parent (not single mother only), senior citizens and the gay community.

Given that will how government will highlight target sectors for government grants, everyone will be happy. This statement is bold, dramatic and wishful thinking at the same time. However, who knows, this could mean a much better country to live in.

And it starts with a simple approach, highlighting government grants aimed at debt relief for the gay community. This will make the Hollywood community boring and stuffy in comparison. It’s wishful thinking, but who knows, the first lady might be reading this.

The Value Of A Construction Inspection

Buyers of re-sale homes almost always have their homes inspected by a professional inspector. Buyers of new homes, however, often do not take this important step. There are several reasons for this:

The buyer is getting a brand new home, and thinks that the inspection is an unnecessary added cost.

The buyer feels that they are protected by the builder’s one-year warranty for workmanship, plus extended structural warranty.

In many cases, the home is inspected by city inspectors as a part of the permitting process.

Buyers believe that they can rely on the builder’s reputation.

The builder is resistant to idea of third party inspections.

Buyers are not aware that a home inspection is a recommended alternative.

The buyer plans to “keep an eye” on the construction.

A Business Relationship

The construction of a home is a big project involving many contractors and suppliers. As the buyer and homeowner you are the financer and recipient of the final product. If you are like most people, this is your biggest investment. Understandably, most people want to establish a good rapport with their builder. They must rely on the builder throughout the job, and for warranty and service work after completion. They feel that they need the builder’s friendship and good will, and do not want to risk damaging the relationship.

You will need to come to terms with this in your own mind. Do not allow your anxiety about the construction process to obscure the fact that you have a business relationship with your builder. You are working together under a contract. It is possible to be cordial and respectful, while maintaining the right to bring up problems and concerns. It is best to establish the ground rules for your relationship at the beginning of the project. At some point, you may need to tell the builder that something is not acceptable to you.

Schedule Inspections

Let the builder know at the outset that you will be getting a construction inspection. You may hear (from the builder or others) that this is unnecessary, that city inspections will be done, that this is an unusual step, etc. Stand your ground on the inspection decision. After you have let the builder know that you will be getting an inspection, send an email or written note clarifying when your inspections will be done. Make it clear that you will need to have the utilities connected for your final inspection. Allow enough time after the final inspection for corrections to be made before closing. Check with your inspector about which inspections he recommends. The three that come to mind are: foundation, pre-sheetrock, and final inspection.

Foundation Inspection

With some complicated foundations, you should have an engineer review the construction as it progresses. In other cases, a licensed inspector can do the job. Usually, city inspectors do a layout inspection, making sure the foundation does not overlap building lines. Whether or not you are in a city, ask your inspector to double check this. Ask for a copy of the “forms survey”, if the builder has one. If a forms survey has not been done, carefully measure from the property lines. If there is some doubt about whether the structure encroaches over building lines, have a survey done before proceeding. In addition to the layout, the inspector will check the steel content, depth of footings, post tension cables, and other parts of the foundation.

Pre-Sheetrock Inspection

Most builders invite the homeowner to do a walk through after framing, HVAC and plumbing rough-in, and electrical wiring are complete. This is a good time to look at your outlet locations and window and door placements. Make sure that any changes in the plans have been picked up and made by the sub contractors.

While you check for layout items, your home inspector can look closely at the construction. His report might include: broken plumbing lines, improper flashing, cut or bowed studs, inadequate bracing, beams that over-span their strength, AC ducts that are crushed, etc. These items are easy to correct at this point, before sheetrock and finish materials are installed.

It is not realistic to expect the construction to check out perfectly. Every builder in every price range will have some items to correct, both from the city and the third party inspector. Let your builder know that you will provide him with the report immediately, so that he can address the items before the walls are closed up.

Final Inspection

You will need to have all utilities on in order to complete this inspection. Normally, the builder requests a “walk-thru” inspection with you when the house is substantially complete. If utilities are on, you could schedule your inspector at this time. You can focus on paint and touch up items, while your inspector conducts a more thorough inspection, checking for leaks, non functional outlets, final grading of the lot, flashing problems, appliance operation, voids in mortar, etc.

The Construction Inspection

At some point you will sell you home, and your buyer will likely have your home inspected. Some of the items the inspector catches now may seem minor, but they will come up later in your buyer’s home inspection if they are not corrected. It is in your best interest to have everything nailed down now. If there are items that cannot be fixed before closing, and you cannot delay closing, ask the builder to sign a written list of items to be repaired or completed.

Building a new home can be an exciting and rewarding experience. A new home can deliver the right floor plan and finishes for you. It is a complicated project and huge investment. The support, advice and information that you will gain from a third party inspection is invaluable. Do not leave out this important step in the building process. It is well worth the investment.
