PRWeb Announces Annual Scholarship for Western Washington University Journalism Students

Ferndale, WA (PRWEB) January 5, 2006

PRWeb™, the leader in online visibility for press release distribution, is pleased to announce the David McInnis/PRWeb Scholarship in Online News & Public Relations at Western Washington University. The annual scholarship, established through the WWU Foundation, will be awarded to two exceptional journalism students attending WWU in Bellingham.

The first scholarships will be awarded in the spring for the 2006-07 academic year. PRWeb has pledged a five-year commitment to the Foundation.

“Having hired numerous alumni of WWU’s journalism department, I found that graduates of WWU are part of an important and talented labor pool in Whatcom County,” said David McInnis, CEO and founder of PRWeb. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to help promising students with financial need to complete their education.”

Scholarship recipients must be declared majors in public relations at WWU, have a financial need and demonstrate academic merit. Preference will be given to students with an interest in online news and online marketing. Exceptional students may be awarded a second scholarship in the subsequent year. The recipients of the scholarship will be selected by WWU’s Journalism Department.

To apply for the scholarship, applicants should complete WWU’s standard scholarship application (which includes a statement about the applicant’s need and academic honors) and submit a statement of 400 words or less describing their interest and/or experience with online news or online marketing.

“We are grateful for Mr. McInnis’ generosity and commitment to helping students in Western’s Journalism Department,” said Stephanie Bowers, WWU’s Vice President of University Advancement. “With many exceptional students in financial need, scholarships such as the David McInnis/PRWeb Scholarship are extremely important.”

Georgia Executive Women’s Network Celebrates 10th Annual Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship Awards

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) September 18, 2007

The Georgia Executive Women’s Network will celebrate its 10th annual Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship Awards on Thursday, October 11, at the Atlanta Fish Market. The luncheon will feature three women executives from Delta Airlines in a panel discussion entitled “Overcoming the Odds.” The scholarship program recognizes non-traditional women students in the Atlanta area. Registration for the luncheon will begin at 11:30 am with the luncheon, award ceremony and panel from 12:00 pm — 1:30 pm.

The panel discussion “Overcoming the Odds” will feature Pam Elledge, senior vice president of Delta’s global sales and distribution, MaryAnn Green, vice president Delta technology, airline operations and Keyra Lynn Johnson, director of internal communications.

“As we celebrate our 10th anniversary for our scholarship program, we continue to focus on advancing the power and impact of women. The Delta panel is a strong representation of women executives in Atlanta,” said Ronnie Bulleit, GEWN president. “We look forward to celebrating our scholarship winners and enjoying the insights of our panel members.”

This year’s scholarship winners include: Mildred Boddie, healthcare management major, Clayton State University; Felicia Buffington, accounting major, DeVry University; Erin Ridgely, early childhood education major, Kennesaw State University and Marianne Tomashefski, communications major, Kennesaw State University.

All proceeds from the scholarship luncheon benefit the GEWN Scholarship Fund. Contribution levels include: $ 250 or above to become part of the Host Committee providing two luncheon tickets and recognition in the luncheon program; a table of eight for $ 500 or $ 50 per person.

The first GEWN Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship was awarded for the 1997-98 academic year. To date, the scholarships have supported 29 women “leaders of tomorrow” from 10 different metro Atlanta colleges and universities. The awards started with one $ 1500 award and have grown to four $ 3000 scholarships annually.

“Receiving the GEWN Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship Award was the first time that I felt, as a non-traditional student, that I was not alone in my journey to higher education,” said Rhonda Hudson, past scholarship recipient. “I was now supported by a network of intelligent, powerful and caring women who wanted me to succeed.”

The GEWN Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship recognizes women who are least 24 years of age by the start of the academic year, enrolled as a full-time student for the upcoming academic year in a four-year undergraduate program at a metro Atlanta accredited college or university, have completed at least one year of college, maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale and have demonstrated leadership abilities in school, work, or the community.

Beyond the basic criteria, each candidate is accessed through the application and interview process on academic achievement, leadership accomplishments and potential, sense of purpose/motivation/passion, and interpersonal and communication skills. GEWN accepts applications in January — April each year.

“I have grown academically, socially, professionally and spiritually as a direct result of the GEWN scholarship,” said Emily Rowland Wells, past scholarship recipient, “From the opportunity to complete six more credit hours toward completion of my degree to the privilege of purchasing all of my books, class related supplies and election tools without the stress related to limited finances to the ability to attend conferences, I am truly grateful for the GEWN scholarship.”

“The GEWN scholarship allowed me to concentrate on my studies instead of my finances and helped me graduate with a high honor,” said Stella Xu, past scholarship recipient. “In addition, the scholarship enabled me to begin my graduate study immediately following completion of my undergraduate degree. I appreciate everything GEWN has done for me and hope more students can benefit from the GEWN scholarship.”
