University of New England Awarded Grant for Traumatic Brain Injury Prevention and Education

UNE’s Ed Bilsky and Pres. Danielle Ripich (left) receive check from Danielle Goulet and Brad Goulet (right) of the Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation

Biddeford, ME (PRWEB) January 30, 2012

The University of New England Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences (CEN) has been awarded a generous grant from the Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation. The grant will help support three projects related to educating students about traumatic brain injury (TBI), including strategies to protect the brain from injury and how to care for patients and families who are recovering from a TBI.

The Foundation was named for Michael T. Goulet, a beloved son, brother and friend whose life was tragically cut short. On February 15th, 2003 as a result of a snowmobile accident, Michael endured a traumatic brain injury. He made a remarkable recovery after undergoing brain surgery, months of intensive rehabilitation, and years of medical care. Subsequent to his recovery, Michael developed a seizure disorder and despite his medical challenges, enrolled at St. Joseph’s College as a psychology major in the hopes of making a difference in the lives of others with experiences like his. Tragically, Michael suffered a grand mal seizure and passed away from complications on October 14, 2010.

The Foundation raises awareness about traumatic brain injuries and epilepsy disorders, provides financial support for afflicted individuals and their families, as well as grants to contribute to medical research and advances in this area.

Brad Goulet, Michael’s father and chairman of the Foundation, states, “On behalf of the Foundation, our donors, volunteers, and our family, it gives me great pleasure to present this grant to the University’s Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences. Our Foundation was founded from a deep personal tragedy and the need to make a difference in people’s lives affected by brain injury and epilepsy. These programs offer an opportunity to make a difference with the greatest impact – prevention – through the Brain Safety Module development, as well as the chance to redefine the model of treatment for patients and families as they migrate from trauma, acute care, rehabilitation, and re-integration through the internship and fellowship programs.”

He adds, “We are very pleased to be working with a local institution and grateful to the University and Dr. Bilsky for their leadership in developing and sponsoring these programs. We look forward to the results of their work and know in our hearts you will make Michael proud.”

Edward Bilsky, Ph.D, UNE’s Associate Provost for Research and Scholarship, and the founding director of the CEN, says “This generous grant will enable us to expand our education activities around the important issue of brain safety. These efforts include outreach to local K-12 communities including Michael’s alma mater, Thornton Academy, as well as in the training of future osteopathic physicians and other health care professionals who have expressed a desire to care for TBI patients. We are pleased to honor Michael’s legacy of dedication, perseverance and hope in the midst of adversity by reaching out to our communities.”

Specifically, the grants support three important CEN programs:

K-12 Education Module on Brain Safety – CEN faculty and students have developed an educational module for K-5, middle and high school students that focuses on brain safety. Through discussions and hands-on activities, the module highlights the fragility of the human brain and the need to protect it from injury (e.g., helmet safety). The module has been field-tested in several local school systems in southern Maine, and the grant will enable it to expand to more schools and include more activities; for example, CEN is developing a module on concussions given the large number of young people participating in contact sports such as ice hockey, football and soccer.

CEN Summer Intern Program– In 2011, CEN launched a summer internship program that introduced high school and college students to the connection between medicine, research and entrepreneurship. Students benefited from an interactive seminar program that included internationally known scientists as well as business leaders in Maine. The program included an associated K-12 outreach component that paired medical students with faculty and undergraduates to develop neuroscience-related education modules for local school systems. Two of the high school interns field-tested the module with UNE’s KidFit summer camp program and continue to work with CEN as liaisons with their school systems. The foundation grant enables CEN to support two additional interns during the program in summer of 2012.

UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine(UNECOM) Student Fellowships in Neurocritical Care and Neurology – The grant will support two additional medical student research fellows in the summer of 2012, which will be awarded to outstanding students interested in pursuing careers in neurology or neurocritical care. The students will be able to participate in research with UNECOM’s established partners such as Maine Medical Center, Togus VA Medical Center, and River Ridge Center.

In collaboration with the Foundation, UNE will present its Tenth Annual InterProfessional Spring Symposium, “Neuroscience Discoveries and Clinical Practice,” on April 5. The symposium will utilize the Goulet family case study for interprofessional roundtable discussions about coordinated brain care. Breakout sessions will address the topics of migraine headaches, neuroplasticity in children, health policy, and health and wellness. Dr. Bilsky will deliver the keynote address, “Coordinated Brain Care: How Neuroscience Discoveries and Interprofessional Practices Can Improve Patient and Population Health.”

Good Shepherd Flooring Awarded Verified Vendor Seal Following Completed CCR Registration

Good Shepherd Flooring Awarded Verified Vendor Seal Following Completed CCR Registration

St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) October 10, 2011

Good Shepherd Flooring is an experienced, highly trained carpet and flooring cleaning company based in Grand Junction, Colorado. Their technicians use only non-toxic, biodegradable, manufacturer recommended products to clean carpets and remove harmful bacteria and dirt.

Good Shepherd Flooring turned to US Federal Contractor Registration to help them complete their CCR registration and ORCA filing in June 2011. They were subsequently awarded the Verified Vendor seal to affirm that their registration is complete and free from errors.

US Federal Contractor Registration is a third party registration firm which helps business owners with their CCR registration, ORCA filing preparation, FEMA Vendor Profile and government marketing in order to win government contracts. They accomplish this goal by assigning a case manager to guide vendors through the paperwork and necessary steps to do business with the Federal Government.

By adding the Verified Vendor seal to their company website, Good Shepherd Flooring confirms their error-free CCR and ORCA registration for interested federal buyers.

The Georgia Tech Procurement Assistance Center estimates as many as 20% of current records in the Central Contractor Registration contain errors or missing information. These errors can cause problems for vendors and organizations looking for contracts, grants and other payments. Even minor errors and omissions can potentially lead to big headaches for a firm interested in doing business with the Federal government.

By working with an experienced and knowledgeable case worker, business owners can avoid these costly mistakes. US Federal Contractor Registration reviews the vendor’s information, carefully enters it into CCR and cooperates with all parties to navigate through any issues as they arise. Problems commonly encountered involve discrepancies between data recorded in Dun and Bradstreet, CCR and the IRS. While such issues are generally simple to correct, it can be time consuming and frustrating for an inexperienced business owner to determine where the discrepancy lies or even what is causing the problem. US Federal Contractor Registration case managers are familiar with these and other issues, allowing them to quickly identify the problem and correct it.

Completing CCR registration and ORCA filing allows businesses to compete for contracts awarded by the Federal Government. Vendors who meet the SBA’s Small Business Size Standards, such as Good Shepherd Flooring, are in especially high demand as procurement officers seek to meet the 23% government-wide set aside goals for small business contract awards. Good Shepherd Flooring also qualifies for both Veteran- and Women-Owned Business Enterprise set aside contracts.

In order to help vendors stand out and increase buyers’ confidence in a vendor, US Federal Contractor Registration awards businesses with the Verified Vendor seal upon completion of their registration. This seal affirms that the vendor has completed their CCR and ORCA registration and that their registration has been verified to be free from errors. The seal will also benefit procurement specialists who do business with these vendors; they can buy with confidence knowing that time and money will not be wasted due to an incorrect, incomplete or expired CCR registration.

US Federal Contractor Registration is a third party company offering businesses the option to work with a case manager to complete and maintain their CCR registration and ORCA filing for one year, complete their FEMA Vendor Profile and market their business to the federal government. Request a Free Government Market Assessment today at http://governmentcontractingtips.com to find out if government contracting is right for your business.

Herzing University Awarded G.I. Jobs Military Friendly School Title

Herzing University Awarded G.I. Jobs Military Friendly School Title

Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) September 12, 2011

G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has awarded Herzing University the designation of Military Friendly School for the third straight year. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military servicemembers and veterans as students.

“We are very committed to serving those who serve our country, and are gratified to be recognized among the top colleges and universities in the country for active military and veterans,” said Renee Herzing, president, Herzing University. “Our founder and our chief academic officer are both proud veterans with specialized experience who have helped us to create a welcoming environment that supports the unique needs of military personnel and their families.”

All 12 Herzing University locations in the United States and Herzing University Online are Veterans Administration approved. They offer credit for College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) and give American Council on Education (ACE) credit for military training and experience. Herzing University offers financial benefits, support to specific military installations, and specialized staff including veteran advisors who assist veterans with career placement. The university also allows military students to resume their studies without penalty after being called to active service.

“The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools will offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience,” said Derek Blumke, president of Student Veterans of America and a member of the Academic Advisory Board. “This is especially important now with so many schools competing for military students.”

In addition to other educational funding options, Herzing University offers the Military Appreciation Grant that covers up to 20 percent of tuition, and the Henry G. Herzing Scholarship for Severely Injured Servicemembers.

The 2012 G.I. Jobs list of Military Friendly Schools® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. In its effort to help student veterans find the right school, G.I. Jobs incorporated a survey of student veterans into its selection process for the first time this year. This feedback provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a particular institution based on peer reviews from current students. Student veteran survey feedback can be viewed at http://www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/2012list.

Michael Dakduk, Executive Director for Student Veterans of America agrees. “The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience. Nothing is more compelling than actual feedback from current student veterans.”

A full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools® will be highlighted in the G.I. Jobs annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and on a poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. The newly redesigned website, found at http://www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the list, interactive tools and search functionality to assist military veterans with their school decisions. Service members and veterans can also meet individual student veterans from the various schools virtually on the site to learn more about personal school decisions and the transition from the military to an academic environment.

About G.I. Jobs

G.I. Jobs (http://www.gijobs.com) is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business which also publishes The Guide to Military Friendly Schools, Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines and annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”

Nursing Student Awarded the 2011 Jerome Evans Memorial Scholarship

Nursing Student Awarded the 2011 Jerome Evans Memorial Scholarship

College Admissions Assistance, LLC (CAA) has awarded $ 1500 to Tessa Zunk of Tigard, Oregon in the third annual Jerome Evans Memorial Scholarship contest.

Arlington, Texas (PRWEB) August 04, 2011

College Admissions Assistance, LLC (CAA) has awarded $ 1500 to Tessa Zunk of Tigard, Oregon in the third annual Jerome Evans Memorial Scholarship contest. The scholarship was created in honor of CAA team member, Jerome Evans, who died in an accident in 2008. Jerome Evans was a strong proponent of education and community service.

The scholarship, in memoriam of Evans, is available to all high school seniors enrolled in College Admissions Assistance. Students who entered the contest were asked to write an essay on how they have had an influence on someone’s life. Each essay is judged on content, language use, and grammar. Tessa, a first generation college student, wrote an impressive essay about how she discovered her niche—her natural ability to care for others—as she helped her aunt, then her mother, fight cancer. “My mother is an official cancer survivor” she said. “She is doing a lot better.”

This first generation student has had to overcome many hurdles to get where she is today. Winning the scholarship was another triumph for Tessa because English was not her best subject in high school.“I took an IB English class” she said. “It was one of the hardest classes, but it helped me become a better writer. I never mind writing now, especially when I’m passionate about the topic.” And she is passionate about her mother’s recovery.

Tessa will be attending the University of Portland with a Presidential Scholarship and has decided to study nursing because of her love for caretaking and science. She was able to find her right fit college and career choice, and appreciates the help College Admissions Assistance provided along the way.“I would definitely recommend the program to my friends” she said. “They gave me great advice on my essays and helped prepare me for my interviews.”

The College Admissions Assistance team wishes her the best and is sure her willingness to help others will lead her to great things. Congratulations Tessa!

College Admissions Assistance is a comprehensive college-planning service that has helped thousands of students prepare themselves for college—from discovering a great career, achieving admission to the right college, and enjoying the best financial start in life. The company’s ultimate mission is to help each student live out their unique purpose in life by helping them get started with the right college education.

Music Superstar Mary J. Blige’s Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN) and Urban League Awarded Camry Rosario with $ 50,000 Scholarship to Attend Mercy College

Dobbs Ferry, NY (Vocus) December 1, 2010

Thanks to a $ 50,000, four-year college scholarship, funded by recording artist Mary J. Blige’s charity, the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN), and the Urban League, Mercy College freshman Camry Rosario is one step closer to making her dream of attaining a college degree a reality.

Rosario, who enrolled in Mercy’s biology program this fall, says she selected the College because of its prestigious PACT (Personalized Achievement Contract) program.

“The Mercy College PACT appealed to me as soon as I learned about it,” Rosario says.

The PACT, a nationally recognized mentoring program, pairs incoming freshmen with highly qualified, full-time professional mentors who help students navigate through all aspects of college life, from financial aid to finding internships.

Dr. William E. Martinov, executive dean of student services and leadership, says, “The PACT is a cutting edge initiative in higher education. The unique combination of services and programs prepares our high achieving students to be the best candidate for the graduate school or job of their choice.”

Rosario, who meets with her PACT Mentor Avion Rhoden weekly to discuss academic, career and personal goals, has big plans for the future.

“I want to go to graduate school and get the job of my dreams,” she says. “Being here at Mercy will help me do that.”

“By utilizing PACT services, Camry is successfully navigating her college experience and planning for her future,” says Rhoden. “She epitomizes the objective of the PACT.”

Rosario is grateful for the scholarship funding, saying, “It will alleviate the burden of paying for college and provide opportunities that otherwise may not have been possible.”

Women?s Community Clinic Recognized as Leading Nurse Managed Health Clinic by US Dept. of Health and Human Services and Awarded a $1.5 Million Grant

Women’s Community Clinic Recognized as Leading Nurse Managed Health Clinic by US Dept. of Health and Human Services and Awarded a $ 1.5 Million Grant

San Francisco, CA (Vocus) October 14, 2010

The Women’s Community Clinic is pleased to announce that it was recently awarded $ 1.5 million in grant funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The Clinic is one of only 10 nurse managed health clinics (NMHC) awarded this grant nationally and one of only 2 in the state of California.

“We are honored to be selected as one of the leading nurse managed health clinics in the country,” said Carlina Hansen, Executive Director, Women’s Community Clinic. “We know that NMHCs play a vital role in the delivery of high quality health care in our country and this grant significantly improves the Women’s Community Clinic’s ability to provide accessible, quality health care to underserved Bay Area women. With the support of the HRSA grant, the Clinic will also be able to increase our services to include integrated mental health services as well as prenatal care, and primary care-focused wellness services.”

The grant is funded through provisions made by the Affordable Health Care Act and will support the work of the Women’s Community Clinic in providing responsive, respectful, health services to women and girls in the Bay Area and more specifically will support the Clinic in:

Increasing community health training opportunities for nursing students
Augmenting the scope of the Clinic’s services to include mental health services, prenatal care, and primary care-focused wellness services
Improving quality and continuity of care
Developing organizational strategies for the Clinic after the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act
    Implementing Electronic Health Records

The awarding of this grant sends a clear message that the Women’s Community Clinic is one of the leading nurse managed health clinics in the country. A NMHC is a nurse-practice arrangement, managed by advanced practice nurses, that provides primary care or wellness services to underserved or vulnerable populations and that is associated with a school, college, university or department of nursing, federally qualified health center, or independent nonprofit health or social services agency. The Women’s Community Clinic’s program expansion will be made possible by partnerships with the UCSF School of Nursing, the Wright Institute, and local community-based organizations. Training partnerships will focus primarily on creating opportunities for nursing students in a nurse-managed health center setting.

About the Women’s Community Clinic: The Women’s Community Clinic is committed to meeting the sexual and reproductive health care needs of Bay Area women and girls. Our volunteer-based model of care—the only one of its kind in the Bay Area—is highly effective in enabling underserved women to directly access health care services. We honor our mission to improve the health and well-being of women and girls by providing sexual and reproductive health services, outreach services, and health training programs. Since 1999, we have served more than 20,000 women and trained more than 500 health worker volunteers. womenscommunityclinic.org

Paragon Wealth Management Awarded Two Single Mothers Scholarships

Fall 2010 Live Your Dream Scholarship Recipient

Provo, UT (Vocus) September 15, 2010

Paragon Wealth Management, an investment firm in Utah, gave two single mothers full-tuition scholarships on Sept. 11 at their Appreciation Gala at the Tuscany Restaurant in Salt Lake City.

Paragon created the Live Your Dream Scholarship in 2010 for single mothers who are widowed or divorced.

“I’ve always wanted to set up a scholarship like this,” said Katie Bunnell, Live Your Dream Scholarship Co-Chair. “It was a dream come true to actually present the scholarships that night to two amazing women.”

The scholarship was created in honor of Bunnell. She became a single mother unexpectedly in 2005 when her husband passed away. She went back to school to be able to provide better for herself and her daughter, but ran into several roadblocks along the way.

“We want to help single mothers in similar situations as Katie,” said Dave Young, President of Paragon and Bunnell’s father. “We want to make it easier for them to pursue their educations and provide better lives for themselves and their children.”

Paragon hosted a silent auction the night of the Appreciation Gala to raise money for the scholarship. Paragon also hosted a 5K Run/Walk in May to raise funds. Paragon matched the proceeds.

For more information about the Live Your Dream Scholarship and details about eligibility, visit Paragon’s Live Your Dream Scholarship.
