Domestic Adoption “Baby Boom” – Exploiting Women and Families in America

Marion, IA (PRWEB) June 9, 2004

The recent headlines must give hope to people who want to adopt a baby: “Local adoption agency has rare openings” and “Catholic Charities expands its adoption program”. The first article describes a domestic adoption “baby boom”; the second article announces an expansion in a domestic adoption program. But by announcing domestic adoption “baby booms” these agencies might as well be announcing their role in the exploitation of United States citizens.

Not only do mothers who lose children to adoption have life-long problems so severe that some commit suicide as a result, but there is also a higher rate of suicide, childlessness, divorce, alcoholism, and other addictions among adoptees than the norm in society.

Those who profit from adoption blame the adoptees’ problems on genetics. If genetics is the cause, the collection of statistical data might clear up any doubt. In the many cases where mothers married their adopted-out child’s father and had other children, it could be determined what percentage of the kept children experienced the same problems as the adopted-out ones.

According to statistics compiled on adoption.com the mothers who lose babies to adoption “often come from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. These women come from intact families.” (Stolley, 1993) These mothers and their families are more likely to be naïve than to be genetically defective. Told “everyone benefits” from adoption and in the absence of any real information, they may think it’s true. In poorer families, younger “adoptable” children and babies are systematically taken under the guise of child protection. The poverty frequently follows divorce or is related to medical problems of some family member. Most of the mothers have jobs. And although the people who know these moms may see a caring, wonderful, competent individual from the perspective of the government they are only a source of babies for adoption.

The fact that adoptees and natural mothers frequently have serious problems due to separation is well known to experts.

In a paper entitled “CHALLENGING THE SILENCE OF THE MENTAL HEALTH COMMUNITY ON ADOPTION ISSUES” published in the Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless, Vol. II, No. 2. April 2002, Douglas B. Henderson (University of Wisconsin, Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychology) discusses some of the reasons for the experts silence on the issue: Professionals not wanting to admit to failure, the money to be made in adoption, and an unwillingness on the part of adoptees to appear ungrateful to their adopters are a few.

He explains the techniques used by the National Council For Adoption, which represents the agencies that profit from adoption, to silence others: “…the NCFA has attempted to marginalize and pathologize anyone who reports that adoption experiences are problematic. Setting themselves up as the national experts on adoption, while actually representing not the adoptees and (natural) parents who have lived adoption but rather the agencies making money on adoptions, the NCFA has long accused anyone who criticized adoption practices as being ‘antiadoption.’”

With all that is known by experts about the ill effects of separating family and of the secrecy in adoption, it remains that adoption is a very lucrative business. Thanks to lobbying efforts we now have government funding for Infant Adoption Awareness training, maternity homes, adoption counseling, subsidies and other aid for adopters, and so-called “safe havens” where a frightened mother unsure of how to get real help may leave her newborn son or daughter. In some states there are adoption aid “Choose Life” license plates, with proceeds going toward advertising and adoption services.

Those in the health professions can become an “Adoption Specialist” after a free three-day training program. There is no requirement that this training inform trainees of the life-long emotional consequences of surrender/adoption to mother, child or other family members.

By implementing the Adoption University@ curriculum in schools both mother and father may be influenced to “choose” adoption before they are even expecting. All risks are hidden and the implementation of this training in a group setting makes it possible for an opposing viewpoint to be squelched by the group.

The joy and pride of parents and grandparents who have maintained hope, worked through their issues and kept their children is very evident. But with all the adoption training now implemented, a pregnant mother is likely to encounter teachers, doctors, nurses, counselors and others who will not mention the joys of motherhood, but instead will pressure her to surrender all parental rights and will speak of surrender in glowing terms to her parents as well. Her baby’s father is unlikely to support her when adoption has been presented as “better” than taking responsibility for his own child.

A young pregnant mother or her parents may be lured by a “dorm” with “park-like setting”, “beautiful swimming pool” and “cozy fireplace”. Separated from family and society to aid in “decision-making” and repeatedly hearing “It’s your choice” the mothers will leave this maternity home still bleeding from childbirth saying “It was my choice”. With their thoughts constrained by the carefully chosen phrases provided by the adoption industry, it’ll be years before they comprehend that in the their best interest and the best interest of their child the risks of adoption should have been disclosed and the choice to keep children they give birth to should have been promoted.

Other coercive tactics used to obtain babies include having prospective adopters chosen in advance and even present at the birth (and we wouldn’t want to disappoint them, would we?).

The cruelest tactic used to obtain a baby is the use of the open adoption “carrot”, the promise to a mother or family of continuing contact with their child. Many parents don’t know that the adoption may be closed at any time without their consent. Frequently, the adoption is closed immediately; the promise of openness made only to lure them in. For the natural family, it’s devastating.

From the industry standpoint, open adoption has a clear advantage: Mothers whose children were adopted-out know that for speaking out honestly about the effects of adoption on themselves, their child and the rest of their family, the “punishment” will be cutting off all contact with their child. So, as they see their adopted-out children cared for by nannies, treated harshly by male adopters who didn’t really want them in the first place, denied access to their siblings or experiencing other problems these mothers keep quiet or even continue to promote adoption. They may have to convince themselves it is “better” or was “meant to be” just to cope.

The intense solicitation to obtain babies now includes offers to pay “expenses” far beyond pregnancy-related costs. These “expenses” include scholarships, car payments, entertainment, house maintenance, credit card payments and personal loans. How does this compare to soliciting to buy children from families off the streets in Cambodia? THAT is considered criminal! After accepting this aid, a mother may be coerced by agencies or lawyers using the lie that she will have to pay all expenses back if she decides to keep her child. Not surprisingly, there is adopters insurance to protect the adopters.

New tactics to obtain babies are being developed all the time. Even whole nuclear families may be advised that it is “best” to surrender their new baby if a parent has been laid off temporarily.

In his paper, Douglas B. Henderson concludes: “It is time for the silence of the mental health professions on issues related to adoption to end…. Continuing the silence will serve the interests of no one, and will lead to further difficulties for all those touched by the adoption process.”

A domestic adoption “baby boom” should not be a source of pride, but of shame on the part of agencies, medical experts, the government and others for having exploited citizens of our own country, the United States, to obtain babies.

Going Back to Work Doesn’t Have To Be Hard On Baby, Mom

Choosing How To Work
Many new mothers resume their jobs or careers uncertain of their expectations or even their exact reasons for returning to work. As a result, feelings of frustration or disillusionment can follow, with the new mother feeling out of sorts in both roles.

Experts caution that setting goals is vitally important before returning to the workplace. Is it important to advance on the career path, or do the family’s needs have top priority? How much time should be devoted to work each week: part time or full time? More than full time? Establishing boundaries and priorities between the two will help avoid disappointment down the line.

These decisions actually become easier over time. If you’re returning to work only a few weeks after delivery, you’ll probably pick up more or less where you left off. But if you’ve waited months or years, or are changing to a new company, the necessary adjustment will be that much greater.

Using the paternity leave as a “jumping point” from one career or position to another is also very common.

Making That Balance Work
You often hear the division of time between being a mother and being a worker referred to as a juggling act. That metaphor is unfortunately all too apt. Both make demands on your time despite your best intentions and preparations.

Keeping track of the time you spend at work is crucial to dividing your time equally. Setting project or time-management limits to your job will allow you to more carefully manage your workday or week. As you schedule quality time with your children, you may wish to use personal time off from work or vacation time on a monthly basis, to keep close to your child’s development.

Time for Family, Time for Work
If you’re the type of career woman that brings work home with you, don’t spend family time getting caught up. Wait until the baby or toddler is asleep before beginning any projects you want to get knocked out before the next work day.

You can also coordinate your family time, so that your children understand that there’s a time for work and a time to be together. Mothers of older children might wish to combine the two into a homework/job work time, or set time for themselves on weekends when the children understand Mommy that isn’t available, despite being home. The clear boundaries will help your children understand structure and routine – two qualities they’ll need to develop into healthy young people.

Explore Employment Options
Some new mothers may not wish to rejoin the workforce yet feel obligated out of a need for money. There are alternatives to leaving the child during the day, such as home-based businesses and phone-based customer service freelancing. These jobs allow greater freedom, but also lack stability and sometimes guaranteed income, as well.

Telecommuting is rapidly gaining favor with many companies, particularly in the technology and e-commerce markets. With a high speed Internet connection and home fax machine, new mothers may literally combine their two worlds without leaving home.

Why Teach Your Baby to Read

It is important that you teach your baby to read as young as possible. Why? Because there is simply no better time in a child’s life for learning than when they are between 3 months old and their 5th birthday. During this time, their brains are rapidly developing, and as a result, they are sponges for knowledge. Since being able to read is the cornerstone of any successful education, the earlier they start the better. All too often parents leave educating their children up to the public schools, which explains why the Unites States is currently ranked 18th in its literacy rate.

There are many reasons why you should teach your baby to read. It provides brain stimulation during the crucial time when his or her brain is developing. It has also been shown to increase the baby’s IQ. Most importantly though, it gives your child a head start in life. The sooner they begin to read, the sooner they can begin to learn other subjects. This way, by the time your child begins school, he or she will already know what is being taught, and will be put on the fast track, maybe even skipping a grade down the road.

One of the cases which really began to bring the fact that babies can learn to read to the public’s attention was 17 month old Elizabeth Barrett who appeared on the Today show. This was a fascinating story because she was given a series of words and even sentences that she read quite well. Her parents had been reading to her since she was born and had provided her with a very early education. There have also been various books written on the subject such as the excellent book How To Teach Your Baby To Read by Glenn and Janet Doman.

You want to give your child the best chance at succeeding in life, which is why it is so important to begin their education as early as possible. Reading is the most important thing to teach them at this age. It doesn’t have to be stressful or difficult on your child though. Learning can be fun at such a young age, and it is accomplished so easily that they won’t have to struggle in order to learn. In fact, when you use the proper materials, they will look forward to learning.

If you are interested in teaching your infant to read, then the best way to start is by spending just a few minutes a day. Flash cards are a very effective tool. Simply show your baby the word and then flip it over to show them the matching picture on the opposite side. There are videos as well that help teach babies to read. Although some parents may avoid these if they do not want their children watching television at such a young age.

There is no better time to teach your baby to read than the present. Begin looking for learning materials that your baby may enjoy. Such materials can be found on Web sites such as http://www.monkisee.com. This site offers a DVD, flash cards, toys, and more, all with the purpose of teaching your child to read. The Basic Starter Reading Kit that the site offers contains the DVD and 4 sets of flash cards, each covering a total of 40 words. The DVD, Monki See Monki Doo: Baby’s First Words, provides an excellent starting place and covers the most important words, such as the parts of the body and familiar terms such as mommy, daddy, baby, and bottle.

By using the materials produced by Monki See Monki Doo you are getting the best of what worked for Krista. She has poured her heart and soul into the creation of the materials. For more information on how to teach your baby to read visit http://www.monkisee.com.

Baby Fingers: Baby Sign Language Classes For Parents And Kids

As a music therapist, I knew that my graduate degree in Deaf education would have to be put to work that included music. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a therapeutic preschool where I had a class of deaf children whose parents were hearing, together with hearing children whose parents were Deaf. Many of the deaf children with hearing parents who didn’t sign, did not have access to language until they began school—their hearing counter parts with deaf, signing parents, were much further along. So learning Sign in the classroom opened many doors for these 3 and 4 year olds. Finally they knew what to call a table, a book, an apple, a friend… and signing while singing songs helped to solidify their new language.

Research supports the benefits of music and sign… Among others, in 1995, Buday wrote an article for the Journal of Music Therapy highlighting the benefits of signed songs on sign and speech imitation by children with autism. The work of Joseph Garcia of Sign with Your Baby, throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, chronicles the delight of parents around the world who have found signing to decrease behavior issues and communication related frustration, while jumpstarting language development.

As a mom myself, I found that putting my own research to work in my daily life with my children was priceless. At 6 ½ months of age, each of my children began to imitate my signs and communicate using a real language! That led me to develop Baby Fingers LLC, www.mybabyfingers In my classes at Baby Fingers, music is a key component in teaching the signs. Babies focus for longer periods of time during songs, allowing more eye contact with the teacher or parents. During these moments of eye contact, a great deal of learning can take place. The songs also act as a memory aid for the grown-ups, so they can go home and practice signing in a natural way with their child. Bilingual families in our program have found that translating songs from class into their home language, coupled with the signs also learned in class, appears to “bridge the gap” between English and the family’s primary language. This process of signing and singing together provides overall growth in communication and strengthens the bond between parent and child.

Families in New York City and the surrounding areas are flocking to Baby Fingers classes. Families from around the globe can join my webinars and support what you learn with my series of sign language books for children. Feel free to contact me with your questions on how to get started at www.mybabyfingers

Baby Clothes – The Top 7 Essentials

One of the best parts of preparing for a new baby is to buy baby clothes. The tiny clothes are so charming and can melt any heart any number of times. If you have had any issues about whether you will be a good mom or dad, just take a look at that cute onesie – anything that fits something so small can’t be unmanageable!

One thing you must keep in mind when buying baby clothes is that your new baby is going to need lots of them. The top seven things that your baby’s wardrobe must have are:

1. Diapers: I can’t even begin to tell you how many of those your baby will need, but just buy them in bulk. For ease of operation and less headache for mommy, try the disposable types

2. Onesies: Onesies are one – piece garments like overalls or coveralls and expect your new born to be spending a lot of time in them. Choose onesies that can be easily opened and fastened so that you can change the baby with minimal effort.

Cotton tees: Cotton tees teemed up with cotton shorts or skirts and are great for indoors. Do buy lots of tees because they will need frequent changing.

3. Sleep – ins: Sleep ins like sleepers and pajamas for night wear keep the baby safe from draft and are comfortable to sleep in.

4. Warm clothes: Add some warm clothes like sweaters and fleecewear in your baby’s wardrobe because they need a lot of protection from cold weather.

5. Caps and hats: Maybe not several of them, but buy a couple of caps to keep the baby’s head out of the wind.

6. Mittens: In winters you can’t do without them but keep some cotton ones for the summers so that the baby doesn’t scratch itself with its own nails. Babies do that, seriously.

Baby Phat Rush Card – Review

Baby Phat Rush Card – Review

Review of the Baby Phat Rush Card created by Russell Simmons co founder of record label Def Jam.

The baby phat rush card is a prepaid credit card. It was created by Russell Simmons he co founded the popular Def Jam record label.

The baby phat prepaid card works this way; you make a deposit on your card, then you can use your card to make purchases, then the funds to pay for those purchases are deducted from your card. The card offers 100% guaranteed approval.

There is no credit or chex systems check. The baby phat rush card is issued in a pink design and the rush card is issued in a black design.

With this card you have free direct deposit. To enroll in this you only have to fill out a form and turn that into your employer or payroll department.

Then you checks will be deposited into your rush card. You will still get a breakdown on your hours and how much the deposit was.

This card can be used at ATM’s over 800,000 locations throughout the world. In addition you get free online account access.

You can use your card to make purchases online or over the phone. There is also another benefit; you can write physical paper checks from your rush card account.

To take advantage of this feature, you sign in to your rush card account and insert the person or business details that you want to pay. Their details simply include name, address and amount of payment.

Then press send a real physical check will be sent to the business or person. This can save you money by not having to buy money orders again.

With this service and direct deposit you will also save money by not having to pay for check cashing fees.

However, we do not recommend the rush card. This is because of the number of fees they have that other prepaid cards do not carry.

An example is the convenience fee. This is a fee you are charged every time you use your card.

You will be charged $1.00 with a maximum charge of $10.00 a month. However during a month you will be charged $1.00 for every transaction you make using your card.

You will have to wait till the end of the month and full calendar month later to have your extra charges refunded to your account.

This can work out to you waiting almost a full two months before you are refunded for your extra charges. This is insane, furthermore who only uses their card ten times in a month?

It’s hard to believe that someone can be charged these fees. In addition having to wait so long to get your refund.

Also with the rush card in order to use bill pay you must pay $2.00 and then an additional $1.00 for every check you write. There are many prepaid cards that offer this service for free.

The rush card says there are no hidden fees with their card. Yet you get charged every time you use your card. The rush card carries the most fees of any prepaid card we have reviewed.

In sum<img src="http://www.articlesfactory.com/pic/x.gif" alt="Business Management Articles" border="0", look at some other prepaid cards. They have fewer fees and better benefits for being a card holder.

How to Protect Your Baby From the Sun’s Rays

When the sun is out and the weather is crisp and clear, it’s difficult to resist going outside to enjoy time with your little one. Whether you’re visiting the park together or enjoying a meal on your patio, the warmth of the sun’s rays feel especially soothing on the skin. Unfortunately, these rays are also damaging to the skin – and even more so for your baby.

Below, we’ll take a closer look at the sun’s ultraviolet rays in the context of what they can do to your infant’s skin. We’ll offer a few suggestions for buying suntan lotion and describe the benefits of staying in the shade. You’ll also learn how to protect your little one’s eyes in the event you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time.

The Danger Of Ultraviolet Rays

You might think that a golden-brown tan is the quintessential sign of good health. It’s actually a clear sign of skin damage caused by ultraviolet rays. Over time, too much exposure will eventually cause premature wrinkling and skin blemishes.

There are three types of ultraviolet rays that span a wide spectrum of light: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA and UVB are the most well-known because they directly impact our health. UVA rays penetrate several layers of skin. UVB rays penetrate the surface, but little else. Both types of UV light can damage your baby’s skin beyond the visible signs of sunburns and mild irritation. Over years of exposure, the cellular damage accrues and can even lead to skin cancer.

Using The Right Suntan Lotion

Most sunscreens and suntan lotions have an SPF rating. The abbreviation stands for “sun protection factor.” The rating reflects the number of minutes of protection offered by the product. A simple rule of thumb – though not entirely accurate – is to multiply the SPF rating by twenty. For example, a person who normally burns after fifteen minutes would be protected for 450 minutes while using an SPF 30 sunscreen.

Few people realize that a product’s SPF rating only indicates protection from UVB rays. It does not reflect the product’s ability to protect your infant’s skin from UVA rays. This is an important distinction because UVA rays can be just as damaging.

Another important note: ultraviolet rays can penetrate cloud covers. If you and your baby are enjoying time together at the park on a cloudy day, you should still apply a high-quality sunscreen to her skin.

Fun In The Sun Versus Safe In The Shade

A lot of parents think the sun is unable to cause damage during short periods of exposure. In reality, UV damage accumulates. Even if you and your baby spend five or ten minutes outside, the ultraviolet rays can still penetrate her skin. Because her skin is still fragile, it is more susceptible to cellular damage than your skin.

This is one of the reasons pediatricians suggest limiting babies’ exposure to the sun whenever possible. Stay in the shade. Otherwise, liberally apply a strong sunscreen to your baby’s skin that offers her protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Safeguarding Your Baby’s Eyes

In the same way ultraviolet rays can damage the skin, they can also cause eye problems. Millions of people suffer from cataracts due to prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Keep in mind, your baby’s eyes are extremely sensitive. They need protection. Consider buying sunglasses that provide a guard against ultraviolet light. The darkness of the tint matters less than the UV protection.

Don’t underestimate the power of the sun’s rays. Their warmth may feel comforting against the skin, but they penetrate the surface and cause damage. Your baby relies upon you to help ensure she’s protected. If you intend to spend time outside, ask your little one’s pediatrician for sunscreen recommendations.
