Millennia Atlantic University to Host Official “Groundbreaking” Ceremony

Doral, FL (PRWEB) November 17, 2011

Millennia Atlantic University (MAU), founded in 2005, has called a modest 8,000 sq. ft. ground-floor space situated in a strip mall home since 2007. The university is now prepared to relocate to an 11,000 sq. ft. facility and occupy three of the four floors at 3801 NW 97th Avenue in Doral.

On Monday, November 21st between 12:00pm and 2:00pm, MAU will host current and future students, faculty members, business leaders, the media, and city officials at an official groundbreaking event. Although the building is constructed, the interior renovations for the university began in late October. The event will signify the ceremonial driving of the “first nails” into the walls of the new facility to proudly display an MAU banner. Guests will be treated to a light lunch, and tours of the facility will be given by university president, Aristides Maza-Duerto, Ph.D. and Brett Moss, the architect and general contractor.

“This is an exciting time for Millennia,” said Aristides Maza-Duerto, president of MAU, “The University has outgrown its current facility, and the new building will allow us to better serve our students and faculty by tripling our available classroom space,” he continued.

The architect for the project, Moss Architecture + Design Group, is aiming for the commercial interior to be LEED certified “green energy efficient” by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBG).

During 2010, MAU was granted accreditation by the Accrediting Council for Independent Schools and Colleges (ACICS) to award associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. Earlier this year the university was authorized by the Federal government to offer financial aid Title IV funding to those who qualify. The university will formally occupy the new space in Spring 2012.

The Communion Ceremony

The communion ceremony is one of the most important ceremonies in Christianity, enacted by all sects of the Christian church from Catholicism to Eastern Orthodox branches to Protestant denominations. While some churches will practice the ceremony at each gathering (such as Catholics at Mass and weddings) some participate less frequently, usually once a month or so. Every church partakes in communion around Easter time, which is the anniversary of Christ’s death and his own establishment of the idea of communion.

Christ’s Communion Ceremony

The foundation of the communion ceremony was established by Jesus Christ at what is today known as the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus partook in with his disciples before he died at Calvary. According to all four of the first books of the Christian bible, Christ knew that his death was imminent. He asked his disciples to remember him when they partook of both wine and bread, thus the communion ceremony includes both of these elements.

Symbolism

The two elements of the communion ceremony are intended to remind followers of Christ’s suffering. The first element is the bread, which Christ said was broken as his body was to be on the cross. The second element, the wine, symbolizes the blood of Christ which was spilled on the Christ. Christians partake of the elements in order to reflect on what Christ did for them by sacrificing himself on the cross for their sins.

Although the elements are specific in the Bible, not all denominations follow these elements to the letter. Catholics will use wafers in substitution for bread, while many denominations substitute juice for wine. While many do so in order to allow younger believers to partake legally, some denominations such as Baptists do so out of conviction that alcohol is strictly forbidden. This of course is contentious, as it makes for some pretty impressive acrobatics in describing why wine was okay for Jesus but not for modern believers.

Major Denominational Differences

The actual form of the elements are just one of the differences that communion takes in different denominational communion ceremony.

Catholicism dictates that communion be administered by a priest or other person in authority of the diocese. Most Eastern Orthodox churches also follow this dictum.

Protestants, on the other hand, rejected the idea of one man in charge of the church many centuries ago. As such, Protestant communion is generally a joint ceremony administered to the entire congregation in an offeratorial manner, with the pastors and deacons of the church praying before the elements are passed through the congregation on a plate.

The communion ceremony is also called the Eucharist among Catholic practitioners. In all denominations, the ceremony is a symbol of the New Covenant between God and men. No longer bound by strict religious observances but by the promise that God’s Son’s sacrifice atoned for all of the sins of men, those who choose to believe in Christ partake in the ceremony as a reminder of their salvation.

Archbishops Criticise Gay Clerics’ Ceremony

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York yesterday expressed their “very great concern” over a wedding-style service between two gay priests at a London church and condemned clergy who disregarded Church of England teaching on human sexuality.

The joint statement from Rowan Williams and John Sentamu, the two most senior figures in the church, is the most significant rebuke yet about the ceremony involving the Rev Peter Cowell and the Rev David Lord, who outraged conservatives by exchanging rings and vows at St Bartholomew the Great church, and could increase pressure on the bishop of London to discipline the rector who performed the service, the Rev Martin Dudley.

The archbishops said: “We have heard the reports of the recent service in St Bartholomew the Great with very great concern. We cannot comment on the specific circumstances because they are the subject of an investigation launched by the Bishop of London.

“Those clergy who disagree with the teaching are at liberty to seek to persuade others why they believe, in the light of scripture, tradition and reason, that it should be changed. But they are not at liberty simply to disregard it.”

Although the archbishops are unable to influence the investigation, their intervention will be seen as a warning to those acting unilaterally.

Dudley was unrepentant about conducting the service, saying he did not deliberately disregard the House of Bishops’ guidelines, which do not permit services of blessings for civil partnerships.

In an article for the New Statesman magazine he wrote: “We set out to express, experimentally, pushing at boundaries, a love of a type which is not unusual or perverse but which is perfectly ordinary and accepted outside the church. Why, then, can it not be accepted inside the community that is based, not on law, but on the loving presence of God in Jesus Christ?”

Dudley is not the first priest to incur the wrath of the establishment by flouting guidelines. In 2005 the former Bishop of Durham, the Rev David Jenkins, blessed the civil partnership of the Rev Christopher Wardale and Malcolm Macourt. The incumbent bishop, the Right Rev Tom Wright, was furious but took no action.

The Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement said in a statement there was a long tradition of clergy disregarding “unjust” official teaching, including on remarriage of divorcees and the ordination of women. “All have come to pass and are now considered integral to the life of the church.”

The House of Bishops’ pastoral statement on civil partnerships sees some form of service as within the range of permitted action and clergy are encouraged, by canon law, to pray with people when asked, and may use appropriate liturgies.
