Looking for college loans and grants for your continuing education
The cost of education these days seem to be skyrocketing. With the current financial crisis putting everyone on a rollercoaster of problems concerning finances and where to get them, it seems that a lot of students graduating from high school will have to be content with going to a cheaper and more affordable community college instead of the college that can maximize their potentials and help them realize their dreams. This should not be the case. And for those who are at their rope’s end, you should know that hope can be found in college loans and grants as well as in government institutions that offer student financial aid to those who need it.
Finding the right funding for your college education can be pretty tough. That is if you do not know where exactly to find them and what exactly you need to do to qualify for these things. But when you do get luck and get yourself pointed in the right direction, you will see that there are people out there who put a high value on your education and where you get it and more than interesting to extend help. College loans and grants are given to a lot of freshmen every year as well as to upper classmen who do well with their earlier years at college. When you are looking to get help with funding for college, you should know that grants and loans are two different things. You should know what these two different financial aids are before you try out for one or the other.
Grants are funds that are given to students who qualify and are not required to pay back this amount after graduation. The student financial aid called a student loan or college loans has to be paid back but in terms that can be easily afforded by the student and their families either while the student is in school or when he graduates and starts working. There are different qualifying requirements for these two different college financial aids. You may need to know a few of the things that can make you qualify for any of these educational financial aids.
Some students who apply for financial aid with FAFSA or Free Application for Financial Student aid often hope that they get a grant instead of a loan. The college loans and grants that are available to students through FAFSA are given out to students who most deserve the help, and this is determined through an investigation of the applicants and the financial capabilities that their families have. If a student applying for student financial aid is independent or supporting himself, he is more likely to be given a grant instead of a loan. This has to be proven to the grant giving body, however, along with his capacity to do well in college and to continue doing well to keep the grant funding from being withdrawn. Other students who may easily qualify for grants are those who belong to families who are not financially well-off.
Finding the right kinds of college loans and grants and the best student financial aid for you is easy if you know where to look and you understand what the requirements are.

Continuing Education Grants
There is a huge difference between a grant and a loan, unlike a loan you do not have to repay the financial aid you receive in the form of a grant. There are different federal bodies which provide continuing education grants for the general population, and each has different eligibility criteria. Most continuing education grants and scholarships programs are offered to students who meet specific academic standards and are from a low income group. People require education grants to improve their existing skill levels and to further their career goals with higher education. Some grants are offered for specific education programs in research or technology and are mostly given out by big corporate houses or political organizations. A few organizations offer gender specific continuing education grants for women from low income homes.
Different Education Grants
There are many reasons for wanting to further ones education, and the most common reason is career advancement or getting a job. In some cases, people discontinue their education in order to support themselves or their families and these people over time realize that they need higher education to better support themselves. Keeping these people in mind, organizations and institutes offer continuing education grants for adults who are looking to re-enroll in college programs. The changing economy also forces people to make career changes and these people require formal education to successfully make this transition.
In America, there are over 10 million single moms and for most, it’s hard to support themselves and their offspring. There are several federal programs which provide college grants for single moms, making it possible for them to get a much required higher education. Studies have shown that women are better able to cope with social and mental stress if they are well educated. Organizations who support women’s causes have made education grant money available for women who are victims of domestic abuse or violent crimes. A few women’s liberation organizations are also contributing towards continuing educational grants for women to help them become independent.
Institutes across America are also helping educators to improve their knowledge base and upgrade their teaching strategies. A percentage of the governments grant money is specifically kept aside for programs that allow continuing education grants for teachers. The federal teach grant, provides teachers with a sum of upto USD 4,000 for further education. Such programs have helped raise the standard of education in the elementary and secondary schools. Continuing education grants for individuals has helped the society on the whole and has contributed in improving the standard of living.
Eligibility for Education Grants
Different grant programs have different eligibility criteria which are specific and sometimes exclusive to grants for continuing education. Some institutional education grants allow an organization to educate it’s employees in certain aspects of their duties which benefit the general population. If you are wondering how to apply for free government grants, well there are some application forms you need to fill out and produce some documents regarding income and identity proof. When applying for a federal grant for students one has to fill the ‘Free Application for Federal Student Aid’ (FAFSA) form. To fill this form you will need documents like social security number, driving license and income statements. For most grants, it is required that you be a US citizen and do not have a criminal background. Some teaching grants come with a contract which stipulates that you need to teach for atleast one year in a community college or government aided school. Concept related grants which offer aid to certain ethnic groups or race have their own eligibility criteria which you will be required to fulfill. Number of grants are only available for people from certain social background like people from the low income group or single mothers. Obama grants for dads is an unique opportunity for single fathers to get financial aid for education, shelter and more.
Continuing education grants have changed the lives of many and still continue to do so, and all you need to do is apply for them. People get discouraged by the turn around time on the grant applications and the paper work but these obstacles are part and parcel of the whole process.
The Importance of Continuing Education
In today’s ever changing economic times it is more important than ever to you to continue on the path of continuing education. It is only by bettering oneself do you truly protect yourself from being the next casualty of this ever growing recession.
You need to start looking at continuing education as an investment into your self. It is interesting that people completely understand the importance of changing oil in the car in order to keep the car running at peak performance. These same individuals also realize the importance of maintaining their household so it will appreciate in value. Yet, most of these same individuals have not invested a single dime into furthering their own education.
Imagine you graduated from either high school or college 10 years ago and have taken no courses since then. This would be the same as not changing oil in your car for the last 10 years. No one in their right mind would find it acceptable to go 10 years without an oil change and expect their vehicle to perform at peak levels. Why would you expect your place of employment to be any different? When they are forced to make difficult cuts in difficult times, they are going to keep those individuals who have invested in themselves.
With so many choices available today there is no real excuse for you not to continue your education in some way. Continuing education does not have to be a complete curriculum like obtaining your law or nursing degree. Continuing education can be as simple as one class online or a local community college.
To determine the best path for you, you first need to determine in what area you want to continue your education. You need to start with the question – do I enjoy my field of work and do I want to continue in this field? If the answer is yes then look around at those who are either higher in pay or higher on the organization chart. Determine what skills they have that you do not. Do they have management experience and you do not? Management courses are very easy to find online. Do they understand the department budget better than you do? If so, all junior colleges offer many options for non-accountants to better understand accounting.
If you have determined that you do not want to spend the rest of your career in your chosen field then determine what truly inspires you that you would enjoy doing for the rest of your working life. Then take one class in that field. Do not make the mistake many do and dive in over your head and take a complete course load in that field. By taking one class online or at a local junior college you will keep your investment low and be able to determine of this new field of endeavor is as satisfying as you had envisioned.
The next time your place of employment has to make cuts this continuing education path will be noticed and they should recognize what a key asset you are. If not and they make the mistake of letting you go, you should have no problem finding a quality organization to work for that will recognize the investment you have made in yourself.

Adult Continuing Education is Healthy for You
Enlarge ImageAdult continuing education is very practical. Seniors have several advantages over children.
Better memory (truly!)
Experience
Fewer distractions
Better memory
Doctors thought that you couldn’t grow new brain cells, so as old cells died you became more stupid. They now know that the more adult continuing education, the more new brain cells you get. You can even delay Alzheimer’s disease by keeping your brain active.
But old people keep forgetting things! That’s true, because what you remember best are startling, new, shocking things. To an old person it’s a case of “been there, done that”. Nothing is new or shocking.
However, you often have to learn boring things, and there you have an advantage. Seniors trounced the kids in a test of memorizing meaningless words. My book about exams will show you how to make your adult continuing education more exciting, which cuts kid’s advantage over your memory.
Experience
You learn from the known to the unknown. So it’s logical that the more experience you have, the more you can think “yes… that’s right… it’s just like…” I am 65 years old now and I can say that my adult continuing education keeps getting easier because there are always relevant things in my experience.
Distractions
You may have distractions at work still, but let’s face it, are they really as obsessive as your teenage interests? You aren’t going to have to choose between going out on a date and doing some study. You might have to choose between having a nap and study, but my book about exams shows a way round that problem. I’m using it right now!
Exams
Just as your three advantages apply to study, they apply to exams. Were you sick with nerves in your school exams? Your life-career depended on your performance. Now it would be nice to pass, but your experience tells you that you will survive failure, and land on your feet again…so less nerves.
Unless children have wealthy or helpful parents they can’t afford resources that you can afford. For instance, they can afford my free report on writing essays, but not my eBook about passing exams. If you live in a country with timed local phone calls, kids may not be able to do much research on the internet because it costs too much.
There are ways to become a lightning calculator and ways to develop a super memory, and you can afford them all. If you want to learn a language you can probably even afford to get a “superlearning” course that teaches you the language in only fifteen hours.
Why Adult Continuing Education
All right, you have advantages, but why should you bother with adult continuing education?
Prevents brain deterioration
Retraining for a new job
Self employment
I’ve already covered the effect of study on the brain. You get new brain cells.
In modern times you can only expect to keep one job for a short time. You are going to need to retrain for your next job.
Self-employment. You can’t be sacked if you are self-employed, but you can go broke. It is best to develop your home business part-time until it is earning you twice as much as your job. Then if you are retrenched from your job you won’t care.
Then you won’t need to worry about adult continuing education any more will you? Oops… you will need to keep learning even more when you have your own business. For instance, you are going to have to learn book-keeping unless you can afford an accountant to do the work. If you have to employ people, you will need to learn the laws that apply.
How should you learn?
I prefer to use a correspondence course for my adult continuing education, but the big advantage of attending classes is that you can get your questions answered instantly.
My book about exams shows you how to find answers on the internet. You will probably find lots of eBooks about what you want to learn. But will I ever see what I buy on the internet? …you may ask.
Think about it. How much more does it cost an eBook vendor to supply 100 eBooks than it costs for one? That’s right… nothing! If it costs me nothing to supply an eBook, why should I try to rob you? I keep buying new eBooks myself and have never failed to get what I paid for. You can definitely get an adult continuing education online.
Whether you are a child or adult avoid writing boringly with your free report.

7 Steps to Selecting a Continuing Education Class
Adults want their education to be relevant to their specific needs. What they are learning must be applicable to their job, values or other responsibilities. Once they see the relevancy in their learning, adults want to create goals for their education. They will desire to see the path that leads them from the beginning to the end of a course, or even a whole curriculum. Each step of this path must make its value evident to the adult learn – why its important, how it will help them on their job, or how it will help improve their life. Finally, adults already have many life experiences and have acquired knowledge from a variety of sources outside of a formal educational environment. So they want to understand how they can connect this prior knowledge, what they already know, with what they will be learning.
Here are the steps to take to select the best value in an adult education class depending on what your specific needs are:
1. Determine whether the location of the class is convenient for you. This includes taking into consideration the time class begins and the time it ends. Typically, continuing education classes will be held in the evening due to adults working during the day.
Ask these questions: How will I get to class (driving, public transportation)? Will I leave for class directly after work, or do I need to make a stop at home? How far is the location of the class from my home and my job? Will I have to allow extra time before or after class because of traffic? Is there parking near the class (college campuses usually have limited parking for commuters) or will I need to walk a distance?
2. Determine whether the class and the institution offering the class allow for flexibility that you need. Often these requests will be handled by the individual instructor, but if a diploma or certification is being offered at the completion of the class, the institutions offering the class may have certain guidelines you must follow.
Ask these questions: How many days am I allowed to miss? Does the instructor offer a make-up class for those who might miss? Am I allowed to leave class early or arrive late?
3. Identify the prerequisites for the class. This simply means understanding what you need to know before enrolling. If you do not have the basic background for the subject matter being taught, a great class can end up being a frustrating experience. The prerequisites are normally listed along with the class description and will indicate other classes that should be taken first or skills you should already have before enrolling.
4. Identify all of your required materials and determine their costs. Most classes will require a textbook. The prices of textbooks are rising all the time and are often not affordable for many students. Depending on the subject matter of your class, your books can cost upwards of $100 each, particularly in technology, accounting and nursing. You may also need materials other than books such as access to a personal computer, special types of calculators or other equipment, certain types of paper or portfolios.
5. Determine your instructor’s availability to respond to questions and meet with you. Find out the instructor’s office hours, phone number and email address. Most of the time the instructor will give this information in the first class, but you should be able to easily find this information if you are considering enrolling in a class. You can test the responsiveness of your instructor by contacting him prior to the first day of the class.
6. Review the course description and outline. This is the most important step. You want to make sure that the class you are investing your time and money in is what you really need or want. The course outline is your map of the class. It should describe the objectives of the class (what you will know once the course is over) and the topics you will cover (how you will reach the objectives).
You may attend an adult education course for many reasons: it is required by your job, it is an initiative you are taking to further your career, to increase your general knowledge of a topic, to network with your peers, or to even just get away for a few hours a week. Whatever your reason, you need to make sure you are getting what you need from the course. If you review the course outline and find that only one topic is relevant to your needs then this is probably not the class for you. Search for another course that perhaps focuses specifically on that topic. In some cases, this course may be required for the particular curriculum you have chosen. If you feel you have enough experience with the topics of the required class, you can often discuss with your instructor about “testing out” of the course.
7. Determine what you get for completing the adult education course or curriculum. You want to see the value of having taken the class or classes. At the end of a class you may receive a certificate of completion, diploma or even a professional certification. If you are attending a college or university, you will most times end with a degree, graduate certificate or continuing education credits.
Try to understand what these completion “rewards” mean to you, your career and your life. It could mean a new designation you can place on your resume or a diploma to display proudly on your wall, but it should be something to make you happy and appreciate the hard work you have put into the class.
Being an adult learner is exciting, but can also have serious negative effects on a person. Self-esteem can be lowered if performance in the class is not as expected, frustration can occur if there is lack of convenience, and boredom is evident if the class does not seem practical. So be sure to thoroughly review all of the information you can about a class you may be interested in enrolling and be certain you feel you will get what you need out of it.
