CLU to Create a Free Online Financial Literacy Center for Low Income and Disadvantaged Women

The California Lutheran University’s (CLU) prestigious California Institute of Finance has received a $ 40,000 grant to start an online financial literacy center for all low-income and disadvantaged women.

The Certified Financial Planner Board grant, which was announced Aug. 1, will fund the first two years of the California Institute of Finance Information Center for Women starting with the fall semester.

The online center will provide financial planning services to women who typically don’t work with an expert but could benefit greatly from the help. The target groups include single mothers, widows, ethnic minorities, divorcees and other low- to middle-income earners from all walks and stages in life.

Services will include personal budgeting, debt relief, children’s education funding, and divorce and retirement planning. Most information will be supplied for free. More comprehensive individualized counseling will be available for a modest fee for women who can afford to pay. The collected fees will be fully used to sustain the operations.

About 180 students in CLU’s MBA and financial planning programs will help develop the online center. Efforts are being made to make the program available to all students nationwide. The students will also provide answers to questions submitted online under the supervision of a faculty member who is a Certified Financial Planner Practitioner or a related field expert. This will enable students to gain practical experience and an understanding of the financial-planning problems faced by the target populations in a service-learning framework.

The Certified Financial Planner Board provides grants to sustainable projects that reach people who are traditionally not served by the profession. CLU’s grant will cover the start-up costs for the online center. After two years, nominal fees charged for the more comprehensive services should cover operating costs. The University will donate faculty, staff and student time.

Rapid Intake to Award 200 Schools with $14,000 E-learning Software Grant that Enables Schools to Create Interactive Online Learning Courses

Rapid Intake, a collaborative rapid e-learning software company, based in Provo, Utah, has announced a nation-wide academic grant program for K-12 and higher-education institutions. Rapid Intake is supplying their award-winning, web-based e-learning software, Unison, to two hundred schools for the purpose of creating online learning courses.

The Rapid Intake E-learning Software Grant provides an unlimited campus license to successful grant applicants for a period of six months. During the grant period, schools can create Flash-based lessons, activities, quizzes, tests, learning games, and simulations, and collaborate during the course creation and review process with an unlimited number of instructors, staff, and administrators.

Schools can get started immediately after being accepted into the program because there is no software to download or install. Teachers simply log in to their school’s account online and build interactive e-learning lessons right within the web browser. Once finished, the lessons can be hosted right within their Rapid Intake e-learning software account, or they can download the course and upload it to another web server or to a learning management system (LMS), such as Blackboard.

“Teachers don’t need to know any programming in Flash to create games, quizzes, tests, and other online learning activities,” says Garin Hess, Rapid Intake CEO.

For teachers who like to create presentations in PowerPoint, they can directly upload their PowerPoint file into Rapid Intake’s online e-learning software, then add additional content based on a built-in library of interactive templates.

Making e-learning software available to teachers helps schools address the growing need to train non-traditional students remotely, present interactive and fun lessons, and also give traditional students meaningful homework assignments.

When the Rapid Intake E-learning Software Grant period is over, schools are able to keep all courses, lessons, quizzes, games, and interactions that they created with Unison. They are also able to use these items to train as many students as they wish.
