Job Title: Field Technician
Location: Macon, GA
Department: Survey
Work Schedule:Seasonal Full Time. Mon-Fri (Some Saturdays)
Salary-Exempt/Hourly: Hourly-Subject to Overtime

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Report to Gas Company as a representative of Southern Cross Corp.
Job entails extensive walking over varying terrain, and in varying weather conditions, constant squatting and bending over
Detect, locate, and evaluate leaks using prescribed procedures.
Report leaks to Gas Company under contract.
Complete required paperwork and sketches.
Read Gas Company maps.
Follow measurements and use compass to locate test points
Perform light manual labor. Follow all safety guidelines. Assist in training survey technician trainees and others.
Survey Technician is responsible for the proper operation, field maintenance, and security of all assigned equipment.

Requirements: Experience is an asset, but not mandatory.

Needs to have a vehicle to work. YOu will be using your own vehicle for work.
Education/Special Skills:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Customer Service Skills
Must have a vehicle to work. You will be using your vehicle to work.
Valid Driver’s License.
Must have legible neat handwriting and be able to do simple location sketches.
Basic Working Computer Knowledge
Must be able to read, write and understand English

Equipment/Machinery/Vehicle Used:
Company provided Flame Pack, Fuel Cylinder (45 lbs.), Combustible Gas Indicator, Probe Bar, Pipe Locator, and others as assigned.
Computers/Internet to complete Certification

Interrelationship and/or Supervisory Skills Needed:
Must be able to make decisions concerning the safety of a leakage situation and report these to the Gas Company.
Must enter private property searching for leaks and be able to respond to questions from the public.
Must be able to coordinate survey with Gas Company personnel.

Training: Company provided training.

Requirements: Employment is contingent upon acceptable completion of substance abuse screening and criminal background checks.

I can tell you from personal experience that it’s one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. I can also tell you from personal experience that it is never too late to begin!

I started my IT career 10 years ago, and it was a tough decision. I was 34 years old, and really knew next to nothing about computers. I decided to attend a technical school to get my career started, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Ten years later, I write ebooks and teach classes dealing with different facets of networking, I’ve earned the most difficult computer certification in the world, and I’ve never been happier. The same thing can happen for you.

As with any new venture, there are some things you have to watch out for, so I’m going to share my experiences with you in this new series of articles. I’ll tell you what worked for me, what didn’t work for me, and some tips and tricks on developing a fun, exciting, and financially rewarding career in Information Technology.

The first decision, and one of the biggest, is to decide what technical school to attend. If you think you can’t afford it, think again. Ask yourself this question: Can you afford not to go?

Almost every college and community college offers some kind of technical class, so look into those. For many of us, though, a technical college such as ITT or ECPI is a better bet. These colleges have more of a focus on technology, and can also help with job placement.

What you should beware with some technical schools is an unrealistic emphasis on how much money you’re going to make when you graduate. Some schools are fond of mentioning the MCSE Salary Survey, making it sound like you’re going to make $65,000 or more in your first IT job. I’m not saying that can’t happen, but it’s not very realistic for your first job. When you visit a school you’re thinking of attending, ask to speak to someone in the job placement department and ask them point-blank where they’ve recently placed graduates and the salaries at which they were hired.

Find out how many of the classes include hands-on labs. This should be close or at 100%. The only real way to learn about software such as Microsoft Server, or any computer hardware, is to really work with it. Just reading about it isn’t enough. Believe it or not, computer hardware and software doesn’t always work the way the books say it will!

You should also ask the school if any of their courses include preparing for computer certification exams. Professional certifications such as the CCNA, Network+, Security+, A+, and MCSE can be a huge boost to your career and your salary. We’ll talk more about that in the next installment of this series. If you are just out of nursing school, the school you attended most likely has a program to assist graduates in finding a job. They may have a job fair and invite medical facilities as well as anyone that has an interest in recruiting nursing students.
Recruiting officers from all branches of the military may be allowed on campus to set up interviews and pitch the military as a nursing career. Head hunters will often get permission from the school or be part of the job fair and look for graduate students to fill positions that are currently open or will be in the near future. If you worked at a healthcare facility while attending school, that may be the foot in the door for employment after graduation.

One of the best ways to find a nursing job is networking. It is essential to join your local professional nursing association as soon as you are eligible. Pay your dues, read the newsletter and attend their after hour get together, seminars, classes and social events. The name of the game is networking. Get acquainted with your counterparts from other facilities. Let them know who you are and what you are all about. Most job and career opportunities make their way through the network before they show up in classified want ads, trade magazines and monster dot Com. If you keep your nose in the game, you will always know who is hiring and when. You may not realize you need a new employment opportunity until it comes around and smacks you upside the head.

Keep your resume up to date and a copy handy at all times. Have your resume ready to email at a moment’s notice. Make sure you have a second to none cover letter to go with it. Sometimes professional organizations will keep a data base that includes resumes for job matching purposes. If your organization has that to offer, make sure your resume is on file. Just make sure they are not selling your information. If you have a web page, consider having a resume online, but minus your personal contact information except an email address.

Keep your skills up to date. Your licensing may require you take refresher courses every year. Make sure you keep up with those but always be on the lookout for training programs that will bring you new skills. The wider your skill set is, the more desirable you are for employment. Especially if you already have some training in a new skill or area of nursing under your belt.

If you truly are interested in finding a new job or even that first job, search out the areas that have nursing shortages. If you have a wide variety of skills, are willing to relocate or are willing to go through their training program if you are new to the field, you will have no problem securing new employment.

Keep your resume up to date and a copy handy at all times. Have your resume ready to email at a moment’s notice. Make sure you have a second to none cover letter to go with it. Sometimes professional organizations will keep a data base that includes resumes for job matching purposes. If your organization has that to offer, make sure your resume is on file. Just make sure they are not selling your information. If you have a web page, consider having a resume online, but minus your personal contact information except an email address.

Keep your skills up to date. Your licensing may require you take refresher courses every year. Make sure you keep up with those but always be on the lookout for training programs that will bring you new skills. The wider your skill set is, the more desirable you are for employment. Especially if you already have some training in a new skill or area of nursing under your belt.

If you truly are interested in finding a new job or even that first job, search out the areas that have nursing shortages. If you have a wide variety of skills, are willing to relocate or are willing to go through their training program if you are new to the field, you will have no problem securing new employment.
