METTLER TOLEDO Announces 2006 Food Science Education Grant

METTLER TOLEDO announces the 2006 Food Science Analysis Education Grant – a grant program which will be awarded at the 2006 annual meeting of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). This will be the second Food Science grant awarded by METTLER TOLEDO. The grant, which consists of analytical equipment and accessories, will be awarded to an educational institution in the United States or Canada that awards degrees up to the Ph.D. level and provides education in food science.

For the past 35 years, METTLER TOLEDO has been recognized as a leader in analytical instrumentation for use in the food and beverage industries. In honor of Dr. Erhard Mettler, founder of the corporation today known as METTLER TOLEDO, one grant will be awarded each calendar year to actively support education in the industry. Throughout his life, Dr. Mettler’s contributions have assisted in establishing the company as a global solutions leader in ever aspect of food management.

The grant package, estimated to be worth in excess of $ 60,000, will be determined according to the needs of the organization applying for the grant. Installation and service of the system is included and two project participants from the organization will be entitled to attend one training course conducted by METTLER TOLEDO. The Food Science Grant Review Board will review and judge the applications and award the grant to the most deserving submitter. The Review Board is an independent committee consisting of distinguished members of the food science community.

George McLean, METTLER TOLEDO instrument market manager, is a member of the Food Science Education Grant Review Board and is in his second year working on the annual grant program. “We look forward to awarding the 2006 Food Science Education Grant,” remarks McLean. “It was an honor to bestow last years award to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – they really possessed the quality and dedication we were looking for in an educational institution.”

The 2005 grant was awarded to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Faye Dong, professor and head of the Food Science & Nutrition department at UIUC received her award at a banquet hosted by METTLER TOLEDO during the 2005 IFT show. “The grant from METTLER TOLEDO shows the copmany’s commitment to supporting high quality education and helping programs enhance their capabilities in teaching food chemistry and food analysis,” commented Dong. “The equipment and instruments will enhance student learning and will an important part of training our future food scientists. We applaud the vision of METTLER TOLEDO and appreciate the support – thank you.”

Written applications for the 2006 grant are due by April 30, 2006. Organizations interested in competing for the grant are required to submit a written application, detailing how the food science instrumentation grant will enhance the education of current or future food scientists at their institutions. The Use of a Food Stamp Application

The Food Stamp program is in place to assist low income or no income families in times of peril. If you think you qualify for food stamp benefits, you will first need to fill out a Food Stamp Application to find out if you are eligible.

The first qualification is you must be a United States citizen. However, legal immigrants, those who have gained asylum, or other permanent residents may be eligible to fill out the food stamp application. Eligible member may qualify for food stamp benefits even if other members of the household are not. Benefits are available to legal immigrants who meet the following requirements:

- You have lived in the country for five or more years
- You receive disability-related assistance benefits
- Are a child under eighteen years of age

Students and other transient visa applicants are not eligible. Many states have their own programs to meet the needs of these and other non-qualified residents.

Income
All food stamp recipient households except those who are elderly or disabled are subject to income verification tests. Gross income, or all non-excluded income from any source, cannot exceed 130% of the federal poverty level or 165% of the federal poverty level if the household has an aged or disabled individual who counts as a separate household. If the gross income test is passed, the net income test is administered. The net income is deduced through an algorithm that accounts for the average utility allowance for a given household. The result of the net income test cannot exceed 100% of the federal poverty level.
