Chicago Web Design Company Begins Work On CDW Memorial Foundation Website

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) January 28, 2012

DjO Design Group, a Chicago web design company, today announced the start of creating a website for the Christopher D. Wheatley Memorial Foundation based in Lemont, IL. The CDW Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity created after Chicago Firefighter and Paramedic Christopher D. Wheatley, 31, died while fighting a restaurant fire on August 9, 2010.

Chris was an inspirational individual who lived a life devoted to serving his community, family and friends. A dedicated Chicago Firefighter, Chris also worked with STARTGroup in his spare time teaching proper emergency response techniques to municipal/plant employees. Chris was also an instructor at University of Illinois Chicago to medical students, teaching proper emergency techniques, and also volunteered his time to a variety of organizations.

“I never met Christopher but based on how his mother Mary described him and all that he did, I felt obligated to help in any way we could”, said Dariusz Owca, cofounder of DjO Design Group. He added, “We want to give his family the ability to continue where Chris left off and continue giving to the community.”

The website construction is underway and will contain information about the public charity, pictures of fundraising events, and the ability for the public to make tax-deductible donations to their scholarship fund. In 2011, the CDW Memorial Foundation distributed over $ 12,000 in scholarships and firefighter charities. In 2012, the Christopher D. Wheatley Memorial Foundation will have its second annual golf fundraiser at Cog Hill golf course in Lemont, IL., located just 30 miles southwest of Chicago.

“We’re excited about the CDW website because it’s a great cause and because some of our existing clients would make great sponsors for their golf outing”, said Dariusz. Flood Specialists, Inc., a Chicago Fire & Water Damage Restoration company is one of these companies who has recently agreed to be a sponsor in the 2012 CDW Memorial Foundation golf fundraiser. “We’re doing more than just building websites, we’re working ‘for’ our clients”, said Dariusz. He added, “When I told Flood Specialists about the golf fundraiser, they didn’t hesitate and wanted to be a part of it”.

The website will be located at http://cdwmemorialfoundation.org and http://chriswheatley.org and will focus on the CDW Memorial Foundation. DjO Design Group will also create a website at http://golf-fundraiser.com for golf fundraising events where all non-profit organizations can have a place to publish their golf events and photos.

Olin College Receives $180,000 Grant from Luce Foundation to Fund Undergraduate Research for Women

Olin College Receives $ 180,000 Grant from Luce Foundation to Fund Undergraduate Research for Women

Needham, Mass. (PRWEB) November 29, 2011

Through its Clare Boothe Luce Program, the Henry Luce Foundation, Inc., of New York City, has made a grant of $ 180,000 to Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering to fund undergraduate research awards for up to 24 women students over a three-year period. The awards, which will begin in 2013, will provide stipends and other support to women students at Olin to pursue research with a faculty advisor. The recipients will be known as Clare Boothe Luce Research Scholars.

“We are very pleased that the Luce Foundation has recognized Olin’s leadership in preparing women for careers in science and engineering,” said Richard K. Miller, president of Olin College. “Recruiting talented women, as well as talented men, has always been an important goal of our admission activities. This is just one of the many ways we empower women for success as scientists and engineers. These awards will provide a significant boost to our efforts to attract high-performing women to our innovative program and prepare them to become top-notch scholars, engineers and innovators.”

The CBL Research Scholars Program at Olin College will provide women students who have completed their first or second year an opportunity to pursue a research project full-time in the summer and part-time during the following school year. Other activities in which Olin’s CBL Scholars will participate include a weekly facilitated discussion group open to all members of the Olin community; relationship building with mentors and peers; public presentation of their work; travel to professional conferences; publication of the results of their work; and, as appropriate, campus visits to explore graduate school and career options with researchers active in their fields of interest. The funding from the Luce Foundation will provide additional resources to supplement existing initiatives at Olin in support of women and men pursuing science and engineering careers.

“We are thrilled to begin the Clare Boothe Luce Research Program at Olin College,” said Sarah Spence Adams, project director and professor of mathematics and electrical and computer engineering at Olin. “The program will provide women students with additional meaningful research experiences and close mentoring relationships with dedicated faculty research advisors. The skills and perspectives our students gain through this program, including participating in professional technical conferences, will be transformative.”

Each award will provide a stipend for research during the summer, summer housing, an additional stipend and four course credits for research continued through the following academic year and access to additional funds to cover research-related expenses, conference registration fees and travel costs. Olin College will contribute faculty time, summer on-campus housing, mentoring activities and mentor support.

“We intend to build a strong support network among the Clare Booth Luce Research Scholars and the program mentors, and we hope our students will continue to use this network after graduation, while they are in graduate school or pursuing their careers,” said Adams. “Additionally, we hope to benefit students not directly involved in the program, for example through certain mentoring programs and activities that will be open to all students.”

Since its first grants in 1989, the Clare Boothe Luce Program has become the single most significant source of private support for women in science, mathematics and engineering. Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987), the wife of Henry R. Luce, was a playwright, journalist, U.S. Ambassador to Italy and the first woman elected to Congress from Connecticut. Through her bequest establishing this program, she sought “to encourage women to enter, study, graduate and teach” in science, mathematics and engineering. The program is part of the New York-based Henry Luce Foundation, which was established in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc. The Foundation focuses on broadening knowledge and encouraging the highest standards of service and leadership.

Opened in 2002, Olin College of Engineering is rapidly garnering a national reputation for innovation in engineering education. With only six classes of graduates and 430 alumni (43 percent women) to date, Olin is also emerging as a major producer of young women pursuing graduate degrees in science and engineering. Currently 45 percent of Olin’s student body is women, an unusually high proportion for an engineering school. Sixty-two Olin alumnae (35 percent) are currently enrolled in graduate programs, most of them at top-ranked universities, in areas including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering. Twenty-one of these women have received the prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (70 percent of Olin’s 30 NSF Graduate Fellowship recipients). Olin women have also won the Goldwater Scholarship and five Fulbright awards.

Brandman University Announces $350,000 Grant from Fletcher Jones Foundation

Brandman University Announces $ 350,000 Grant from Fletcher Jones Foundation

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) October 28, 2011

Brandman University’s School of Nursing and Health Professions has received a gift of $ 350,000 from the Fletcher Jones Foundation in support of scholarships for promising students with financial need. This gift will be instrumental in enabling Brandman University nursing students to complete an advanced degree, achieve their professional goals, and contribute to the advancement of health care in our communities.

Renee McLeod, Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions said, “The Fletcher Jones Foundation is really making a difference for the nursing community and ultimately our patients, who will receive better care from highly skilled nursing leaders and practitioners. The trend that I’ve been seeing is that the majority of potential students cite financial issues and the inability to leave their jobs to go back to school in this very difficult economic climate. Even when the outcome means an increase in income, they are unable to cover the tuition cost. This donation provides a real solution.”

Support from the Fletcher Jones Foundation demonstrates a vote of confidence in Brandman’s innovative School of Nursing and Health Professions, which was established in 2009. All Brandman University nursing faculty have doctorates and current real world experience with established practices and state of the art technology. The curriculum is evidence-based, which trains students for the job and narrows the gap between educational theory and a vital, evolving healthcare practice.

Along with programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master’s in Health Administration (MHA) and Health Risk and Crisis Communication (MS), Brandman offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program for nurse practitioners in five critical areas –adult geriatric primary and acute care, mental health, neonatal and pediatric care. The scholarship is particularly relevant given new recommendations by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020, and a recommendation by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to establish the DNP as the entry point to advanced practice nursing by 2015.

“Fletcher Jones is an important foundation and their support means so much for Brandman. In the current economy, philanthropic contributions have declined significantly. To be granted such a generous first-time gift from the Fletcher Jones Foundation speaks volumes to the future of our nursing program,” said Linda Dixon, Associate Vice Chancellor of Advancement at Brandman University.

All Brandman University programs are specifically designed for adults. Working RNs can explore educational options at Brandman University that will include an online nursing component, short immersion sessions on campus and a state-of-the-art immersive simulation lab that offers real world application of the latest technology. The flexibility and convenience of Brandman’s DNP program is further emphasized by clinical practice internships arranged near the student’s work or home. For more information about nursing programs at Brandman call (800) 746-0379 or visit http://www.brandman.edu/nursing.

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Awards $5 Million in Scholarships to 2011-2012 Academic Class

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Awards $ 5 Million in Scholarships to 2011-2012 Academic Class

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 13, 2011

On September 13th, at its 2011 Scholarship Announcement Ceremony and Reception, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation will recognize more than 1,600 scholarship recipients and their Marine families – who are being awarded nearly $ 5 million for their higher education from the Foundation for this academic year.

The ceremony, which will be hosted by Gen Robert Magnus USMC (Ret), Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Foundation and Margaret B. Davis, President and CEO of the Foundation, and feature a keynote speech by Gen James F. Amos, 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, comes as the Foundation prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary year. During that time, the organization has provided over 26,500 scholarships valued at more than $ 65 milion.

23 student recipients will attend the ceremony. This year’s scholarship recipients represent all 50 states, and include children of Marines killed in action or wounded in combat. The Foundation provides needs-based scholarships to children whose parent has served in the Corps.

“We celebrate the achievements of our remarkable 2011-2012 class of students at this event,” said Davis. “As we reach our 50th year, we reflect on the life-changing opportunities that we’ve made possible for families of those who spend their lives protecting ours, and we look towards a future of continuing to honor Marines by educating their children.”

Over the past year, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has raised nearly $ 15 million in scholarship contributions. At the Reception, two major announcements will be highlighted. The first is from Marine philanthropist Chuck Scianna, who is making a $ 2.5 million commitment to the Foundation. “When you invest in the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, you are not just giving money, you are investing in a young person’s dream,” noted Scianna. His donation is the largest amount received from an individual donor.

The second major commitment that will be highlighted is the Sergeant Dakota Meyer Scholarship Initiative, named after upcoming Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. Dakota Meyer USMC. Sgt. Meyer will be in attendance to announce his commitment to raise $ 1 million by the Foundation’s 50th anniversary on May 28, 2012. He will also “Challenge America” to match his efforts by raising an additional $ 1 million.

“The Corps teaches us to keep faith with our fellow Marines and their families. This initiative does just that by helping to provide an education to children of Marines and to assist each of them in achieving their goals,” said Meyer, who will receive his medal on September 15, 2011, two days after the scholarship event. “Education paves the path to our future and I’m honored to lead this initiative working with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. I hope, and challenge, all Americans to join me in this mission and support our Marine families.”

Additional presenters at the event include a representative from the U.S. Department of Education and SgtMaj Micheal Barrett, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. In addition, distinguished representatives from generous Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation donors such as Lockheed Martin, Toyota and BAE Systems are expected to attend the event to celebrate the scholars.

ABOUT THE MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION: The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to U.S. military families. Since 1962, the Foundation has provided more than 26,500 scholarships valued at over $ 65,000,000 to Marine Corps sons and daughters whose parents have been killed or wounded in combat or have demonstrated financial need. For the 2011-2012 academic year, the Foundation will provide more than 1,600 scholarships totaling nearly $ 5,000,000. The Foundation is proud to have been named by Independent Charities of America as ‘Best in America’ for demonstrating “the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness.”For more information on the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation please visit http://www.mcsf.org.

Our services include Research on what grants are available, qualifying your corporation or self to maximize your potential award and Writing the actual grant on your behalf.

General Purpose and Support Grants

When a grant maker gives your organization an operating grant, you can use it to support the general expenses of operating your organization, from a specific program to the heating bill. An operating grant means the funder supports your organization’s overall mission and trusts you to make good use of the money.

Program or Project Support Grants

Aside from general purpose or operating support grants, most other grants are some form of program or project support. In general, a project grant is given to support a specific, connected set of activities, with a beginning and an end, explicit objectives and a predetermined cost. When a funder gives a grant for a specific project, it is generally a restricted grant and must be used for that project.

In general, project grants are given to support projects related to the mission of the charity receiving the money. There are dozens of kinds of project grants. Here are some of the most common:

Planning Grants

if your organization is planning a major new program, you may need to spend a good deal of time and money just figuring out what it will look like. Before you can even write a proposal to fund the new effort, you may want to research the needs of your constituents, consult with experts in the field, or conduct other planning activities. A planning grant supports such initial project development work.

Seed Money or Start-up Grants

A start-up grant helps a new organization or program in its first few years. The idea is to give the new effort a strong push forward, so it can devote its energy early on to setting up programs without worrying constantly about raising money. Such grants are often for more than one year, and frequently decrease in amount each year. For instance, a grant might be for $ 25,000 the first year, $ 15,000 the second year, and $ 7,000 the last year. The funder assumes that the new organization will begin to raise other funds to replace the decreasing start-up grant.

Management or Technical Assistance Grants:

Unlike most project grants, a technical assistance grant does not directly support the mission- related activities of the charity. Instead, it supports the charity’s management or administration – its fund raising, marketing, financial management and so on. Such a grant might help hire a marketing consultant or pay the salary of a new fund-raiser position.

Facilities and Equipment Grants

Sometimes called “bricks-and-mortar” or capital grants, these grants help an organization buy some long-lasting physical asset – a building, computer or van, for instance. The applicant organization must make the case that the new acquisition will help it serve its clients better. Funders considering a request like this will not only be interested in the applicant’s current activities and financial health, but will also ask about financial and program plans for the next several years. They want to be sure that, if they help an organization move into a permanent space, for example, the organization will have the resources to manage and maintain it. No funder wants to help pay for a new building, only to have it close in four years because it is too expensive for the charity to maintain.

Endowment Grants

some nonprofit charities have set aside money that is invested and earns interest. The charity spends only the interest and keeps the original sum (the principal) untouched. Such a fund is called an endowment and is commonly found within charities with large physical plants, such as hospitals and colleges. Periodically, charities launch fund-raising efforts to start, or add to, an endowment. Like facilities and equipment grant proposals, endowment requests will prompt funders to ask hard questions about the long-term financial outlook of the applicant. The funder wants to be sure that its gift to an endowment will stay in the endowment earning interest, and not be drawn out of the endowment to meet annual operating costs.

Program-Related Investments (PRIs)

In addition to grants, the IRS allows foundations to make loans – called program-related investments (PRIs) – to nonprofits. PRIs must be for projects that would be eligible for grant support. They are usually made at low interest, or even no interest. Unlike grants, PRIs must be paid back to the grant maker. PRIs are often made to charities involved in building projects . Housing Grants

Are you looking for your dream house? Are credit problems holding you back from buying that new home or starting a real-estate venture? Here’s great news! The U.S. Government has recently released over 140 million dollars in Housing Grants. They are relaxing the credit requirements to make it easier for people with low credit ratings to get low interest home loans.

Minority Grants

Minority-owned businesses grew more than four times as fast as U.S firms overall since 1992. They have increased from 2.1 million to over 2.8 million firms, according to a report recently released by the Commerce Department’s Census Bureau. While Affirmative Action has had its issues over the past few years, it is still alive. Though many of the catch phrases are no longer in vogue, most of the money that was available to minorities is still available.

It is no secret that most of our politicians, primarily Senators and Congressmen, hold their positions of power by taking care of their constituents. One of the largest voting blocks is minorities so it should be of no surprise that grants for minorities are a high priority for politicians.

The politics of Grant Giving is driven by the promises that are made by politicians during their campaigns attempting to attract the votes of various minority groups.

There are millions of dollars available for African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, American Indians and practically any other group that is considered a minority.

While there are rules that govern the giving of grants, the following highlights the general amounts and categories that are available:

Over a Billion Dollars of Minority grants available if you are planning on starting a business
If you are expanding an existing business, you might qualify for some of the Millions of Dollars in available grants
It is good business practice to acquire legal advice when starting up a business – you may be eligible for up to $ 8,000 in Legal Advice
There is a possibility that you may qualify for funds to assist in the purchase of your FIRST home
Up to $ 6,000 in Scholarship Grants for College Tuition

Special Interest Groups have a unique niche also and fall into the Grant Giving category. There are quite a number of Government Cash Grants available if you quality and fall into the following groups:

War Veterans or family members of veterans
Low income families
Community block grants
Non Profit Organizations
Artists
Musicians
Nurses
Teachers
Researchers
The physically disabled
HIV and AIDS sufferers
Substance abuse

The difficulty is determining if you qualify and what you qualify for. There is a process that needs to be complied with to determine if you can qualify for a Grant.

Women Only Grants

For years women have worked and struggled to gain equality. The fight is not over but women have the largest opportunity of any group to benefit from the generosity of the government and private foundations programs.

Women represent the single largest voting block in the U.S. Our politicians understand very well that their political tenure may rest with that voting block. That is why the Government has provided:

Over $ 20 Billion in overall grants for women
Billions to start new businesses
Up to $ 50,000 to assist struggling businesses
Over $ 1 Billion for education
Up to $ 10,000 to get a degree
Significant funds available to train for a new job
Over 5,000 Government sources for women entrepreneurs, i.e. Grants, Low Interest Loans, Venture Capital, Management, Federal Assistance.

Every year over 500,000 women start their own business. In fact, 2 out of 3 new businesses are started by women. The most important thing if you’re a woman seeking a grant is, of course, to know where, how and when to apply for one. If you are a person with little or no experience with the Grant-Seeking process, then find an entity, like ours, to support your effort.
