Phix Becomes a Contributor of Take Stock in Children to Help At-Risk Kids

Phix Becomes a Contributor of Take Stock in Children to Help At-Risk Kids

Phix & TSIC

Hollywood, Florida (PRWEB) November 03, 2011

Phix, an all-natural energy drink company, has become one of the proud supporters of Take Stock in Children(TSIC) to help raise awareness and funds for Florida’s low-income and at-risk youths who deserve higher education.

“Florida has one of the lowest high school graduation rates in the country. Less than 5 out of 10 children will graduate from high school this year,” said Doug Brown, President of Phix, “Take Stock in Children is a sustainable and successful program that has helped numerous kids to graduate and pursue higher education. I feel proud and honored that Phix is able to be involved in this great cause to help our future generations, and this has always been an important part of Phix’s corporate culture.”

TSIC provides low-income children with volunteer mentors, case management and social services from middle to high school. If the students graduate the program, they are provided a college scholarship as well as transition services to improve their chances of success in college. Since 1995, TSIC has granted $ 109 million in college scholarships to over 16,000 at-risk children and managed to achieve a graduation rate as high as 92%.

On November 19, TSIC’s “Strides For Education” 5K Walk/Runs will take place across Florida to benefit local programs. Phix will also join this statewide effort with its Miami-Dade Chapter to help raise awareness and funds. “Strides For Education is a great opportunity to engage the whole community in the support of at-risk and deserving children. It’s more than just a walk, its an investment in our country’s future,” said Brown.

The event will be held at Miami Dade College-Kendall Campus at 7:30 am on Sat, Nov 19th, and open to all individuals, families, companies and local organizations, featuring family-friendly activities, giveaways, and much more. Registration is $ 35 per person and is discountable for students with the promo code “graduate”. All proceeds will go to benefit the Take Stock in Children fund. Phix will be on-site to hand out free samples. For more information, please call 305.237.3855 or visit give.takestockinchildren.org.

Moms Are Big Spenders as Kids Return to School According to New Survey

Moms Are Big Spenders as Kids Return to School According to New Survey

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 9, 2005

Moms will be giving their credit cards some exercise as they get ready to send their kids back to school this year. They are smart shoppers and they are spending big, according to a new survey conducted by ClubMom (http://www.clubmom.com), the free national membership organization for moms. Most moms (72%) are spending up to $ 300 per child on their back-to-school items including clothes, notebooks, backpacks, lunchboxes, and other must-haves. Twenty-four percent of moms will spend $ 300 or more per child.

Monica Bernstein, ClubMom’s Mom Expert, helps moms give their spending habits a break by encouraging them to take advantage of warehouse stores and sales. “Then, it’s easy to stock up on items needed throughout future school years,” says Bernstein. “Buying a pack of 200 number 2 pencils won’t seem as silly when you only have to buy them once every three years!”

Shopping with Mom

Summer is coming to a close and before moms know it, their kids are pleading for the latest backpacks, sneakers, and other “hot” back-to-school essentials. While moms love to make their children happy, they aren’t budging. Half of moms say they have the most influence over the items purchased for back-to-school, while only 8% say their children are the biggest influence.

Moms realize that their kids aren’t to blame – 44% of moms either “strongly agree” or “somewhat agree” that their children feel pressured by other kids to wear certain clothes, or carry the newest backpacks and lunchboxes. Nearly 50% of moms think school uniforms would eliminate the pressure to wear certain clothing.

It’s Mom Time

This year’s first day of school will be a breeze for the kids; it’s mom who will be clinging to her children at bus stops across the country. Only 5% of moms will feel relieved when their children go back to school. Thirty-two percent of moms will feel sad because their children are growing up too fast before their eyes. For mom to avoid feeling like she is missing out on her children’s days while at school, ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests that she volunteers in the classroom, or simply gets involved with the PTA.

Even so, after spending the entire summer with their children, 31% of moms are looking forward to getting back into their normal “mom” routines. What is on mom’s agenda now that the kids are hitting the books? Moms will have more time to do the chores and errands (50%), spend time alone (28%), and hit the gym (16%). Working moms will be able to get to work earlier or on time (25%).

Both Better and Worse Than in Mom’s Day

A whopping 84% of moms are happy with the education their children are receiving. Forty-six percent feel the quality of their children’s education is better than the education they received while growing up.

What’s not up to par, and one of their biggest concerns, is their child’s safety. A strong majority of moms (67%) feel that their children are less safe than while they were in school.

While no one can eliminate every potential danger from a child’s life, moms can take some steps toward prevention. ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests the following safety tips:

Go over the “Stranger Danger” rules with your kids: 1. Say no! 2. Get away! 3. Tell someone! 4. Sometimes you need to yell!

Put your child’s school through the paces of the School Safety Checklist, found at http://www.clubmom.com, for assurance that your child will be in a safe environment.

Practice role-playing dangerous scenarios with your children on a weekly basis. Use silly voices to make it engaging, while also getting your important message across!

To make schools even better for their children, the majority of moms (61%) would like to see smaller class sizes, followed by more interaction between parents and teachers (42%), and more enrichment classes like music and art (34%).

School Lunch Surprises

Surprisingly, half of moms think their children’s schools serve a nutritious lunch. However, 46% of moms are still packing the standard “brown bag” lunch, while only 28% give money to their children for a hot lunch in the school cafeteria. Among those who pack a lunch for their child, 40% make a deli meat sandwich and 30% rely on the good old, quick and easy, peanut butter and jelly!

Remembering kids love to dip, ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests moms think outside of the brown paper bag and pack baby carrots with hummus or dressing, or apples with yogurt to dip into. Complete the meal with a thermos full of chicken or tomato soup.

Putting a Stop to Too Much TV and Video Games this School Year

When the school year begins, the summer games come to an end. The majority of moms (80%) put their foot down and place restrictions on the amount of time their children spend watching TV and playing video games.

However, these fun times aren’t completely abolished! Forty-two percent of moms allow their children to watch TV and play video and computer games only after their homework and chores are completed.

To help moms keep their children from vegging out in front of the TV or playing video games for hours on end, ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests that moms set up a token system. For each chore completed, like making the bed, your child gets a quarter. Then, he/she can choose to either save the quarter or turn it in for the privilege of 1-hour of TV or time playing video games.

ClubMom surveyed moms via an online poll of members between July 25 – 31, 2005. The total sample size was 1,209 moms.

The State OF U.S. Kids: 2010

KidsHealth from Nemours

Wilmington, DE (Vocus) January 20, 2010

With President Obama’s first State of the Union Address just around the corner, many Americans are reflecting on their lives today and thinking about what’s in store for the future. When will the economy get better? Will the unemployment rate continue to rise?

But what about kids? What it’s like to be a kid living in the U.S.? That’s what KidsHealth.org and TIME For Kids magazine wanted to know. In a joint survey conducted online, they polled 1,000 kids, ages 9-13, to find out how things are going at home, at school, and in the United States. Below is a glimpse into the minds of today’s generation, appropriately titled The State of U.S. Kids: 2010.

What Kids Say About the Country & Leadership:

Only 18% of kids totally agree that the U.S. economy is strong and only 23% totally agree that people in other countries respect the United States.

When asked to grade how well President Obama is doing his job so far, here’s how kids score him: A (19%), B (30%), C (24%), D (10%), and F (17%).

The economy is the #1 priority for kids, with 45% telling President Obama it is the most important issue he should work on.

When grading the country’s leaders on the economy, 29% of kids gave leaders a C, but a very close 28% of kids gave leaders an F.

What Kids Say About the Future:

Two out of three kids agree with the statement, “My future is going to be great.”

94% of kids say that in the United States, it’s possible for kids to grow up to be anything they want.

51% of kids think the world will be a better place in 10 years.

90% of kids think they will see a woman elected President of the United States in their lifetime.

Understanding Today’s Generation:

When asked “What do you want to be when you grow up,” the most popular professions for girls are teacher (17%) and vet (12%) vs. athlete (15%) and videogame designer (9%) for boys.

39% of kids think math is the school subject most important to the success of their future careers, followed by reading (20%), science (13%), and technology (10%), among others.

Only 1 in 4 kids think money is most important for their future careers, with 53% of kids choosing “How much I will enjoy my job” as first on their list of priorities.

Almost 52% of kids spend less then an hour each day playing outside, with 16% reporting they spend no time at all. However, kids report they spend 1 or more hours each day on the following activities: playing video games (45%), watching TV/movies (79%), or using the computer or IM-ing (51%).

Nearly 18% of kids say their families eat dinner together less then 1-2 times a week, with 8% reporting eating dinner together less then 2-3 times a month.

Gone are the days of not being allowed to go outside and play as punishment and in are the days of technology punishments. Nearly half of kids say they often lose computer or video game privileges when they misbehave or break the rules at home.

1 in 4 kids report their family’s money situation is either “not good” or “bad” and 63% of kids say they worry about money “a lot” or “sometimes.”

75% of kids chose a family member as the person they look up to most, with 2 out of 3 kids choosing a parent.

Note About Survey Methodology:

The survey was conducted online by C&R Research in December 2009 among a sample of 1,004 U.S. children ages 9-13. The sample was balanced and weighted to match 2007 U.S. Census figures for online households with children. The survey has a margin of error no worse than +/- 3.2%.

Handwriting Without Tears – Use The Correct Approach When Teaching Left Handed Kids

In the last few years the number of left handed persons has increased dramatically. This is partly because left handed children are not forced to use the right hand for writing any more but are rather encouraged to use whichever hand the child shows a preference to. Previously a left handed child was always corrected and encouraged to use the right hand.

A left handed child cannot be taught to write using the same principles that are used to teach a right handed child. The normal and the more regular methods of teaching are more suited for a right handed child. Often a right handed person is not even aware of the problems a left handed person has to face.

Here are some of the common problems faced by a left handed child:

Push Vs Pull: When a right handed child is writing he or she is pulling the pen/pencil across the paper. This works well because we write left to right. Left handed children have to push their pen/pencil across the page. This is quite hard. This also makes the nib of the pen/pencil go deeper into the paper rather than flow smoothly.

Smudging: When a left handed child is writing on the paper his or her hand is following the pen/pencil. And this way it is easy to smudge the letters they just wrote. This can cause a real mess. The mess can be even more when a left handed person uses a proper nib in cartridge or a fountain pen.

Watch What You Write: Since we write from left to right (in majority of the languages), a right handed person can watch what they are writing as they are writing. This is often difficult for a left handed person and hence they can develop bad handwriting if not taught using the correct method and approach.

Here are some of the ways in which you can help a left handed approach:

Mindset: First and foremost never ever discourage a left handed child from using the left hand for writing.

Paper Position: Rotate the paper 45 degrees clockwise (top to the right). This way by moving the paper to the right (rather than the traditional approach of keeping it to the left) you are allowing the left handed child to view their writing as they write. This gives them confidence, makes them right faster and teaches them handwriting skills.

Pencil Position: Left handed children should hold their pencils an inch and half higher than right handed children. Encourage them to keep their wrist and hand below the writing line. If you find there is a lot of smudging then may be use a harder lead pencil like number 3 instead of a number 2 lead pencil.

Avoid Hooking: One of the main problems faced by left handed children is that they cannot see what they are writing. In order to be able to see what they are writing they tend to hook their hands above the writing line and write. This is a very difficult posture and cumbersome. Discourage them from hooking. A proper paper position and pencil position will enable them to see what they are writing. So encourage proper paper position and good pencil position and discourage hooking.

Special Products: There are special pens and pencils specifically designed for left handed persons. Make use of them and teach your children handwriting skills the correct way.

And finally Happy Handwriting to one and all…Teach kids handwriting without tears.
