While TX Gov. Rick Perry Talks About Tougher Business Immigration Enforcement But Does Nothing President Obama Acts

Texas Governor Rick Perry has been an outspoken critic of President Obama’s immigration strategy yet when it comes to truly cracking down on businesses who hire undocumented immigrants, the President is actually doing far more.

Rick Casey of the Houston Chronicle does an excellent job of contrasting what Governor Perry Says with what he actually does:

In his state of the state speech in February, Gov. Rick Perry declared, “We must establish criminal penalties for employers who knowingly hire workers who are here in violation of immigration law.” Tough words, but said with a wink and a nod. The nod was to the virulent anti-immigrant sentiments of much of Perry’s constituency, but the wink was to his business backers. Perry’s only immigration legislative push was for a weak “anti-sanctuary city” bill that he declared an “emergency” despite the fact that he wouldn’t identify any actual sanctuary cities in the state.

This strategy of talking tough but doing very little on immigration enforcement is endemic of most Anti-Immigrant Governors. Lets be clear, the federal government enforcing immigration laws is a good thing. The federal government enforcing immigration laws in a smart manner is even better. It is true that these laws need to be reformed, but the rule of law still must be enforced.

Having said all of that, the contrast between the Presidents words and his actions on the issue of employer verification laws are a little more in line:

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is stepping up criminal prosecution of employers. According to a New York Times story Sunday, whereas the Bush administration threw workers in prison and let the employers off light, the Obama administration is doing just the opposite. The politics are fairly obvious. A Republican administration, backed by big business, busted the illegal workers. The current Democratic administration, backed by unions, is busting employers. But there is a policy issue as well.

Now this paragraph above is interesting, as it conflates the Obama Administration as being in cahoots with the Labor Unions on enforcing immigration audits on businesses. When ICE Audits a work place, it creates complications for workers and employers alike.  Unions are not happy about the increased audits. Not because they dont want the law to be enforced but rather because the process is burdensome for businesess and Union’s alike.

While there are challenges, the current Administration is not backing down from enforcing the law:

In Tucson, the owners of a chain of Mexican restaurants and their accountants were charged with felonies in April after raids of 14 restaurants in Arizona and California. Each could theoretically receive more than 80 years in prison, although sentencing guidelines will be for less. Of 42 illegal workers swept up, one was charged with an unrelated crime, 13 detained or deported for civil immigration violations and the rest remained as witnesses or as possibly eligible to gain legal status, reported the Times. The owners were charged with keeping two sets of books and cheating workers out of overtime pay and the government out of taxes on more than $ 400,000 in wages.Last year 119 employers were convicted of crimes, including a Dallas ex-FBI agent.

To these eyes this looks a lot more substantive then what Governor Perry is doing in his state. Which is actually not hard, when he isnt doing anything but blowing hot air.

If you finance the purchase of equipment for your business, even if you do not pay the purchase amount up front, your business can take advantage of IRS Code Section 179.  Thus, instead of depreciating the costs of the equipment in small percentages over the life of the equipment, you can take the total amount (again, even if you do not pay for it all up front) up to 0,000 as a deduction against your tax able income.

This write-off of 0,000 is for this year (2008) only.  In 2009, the amount resorts back to the normal 0,000.  Further, the write down has to be in the year the equipment was acquired – no carry forward.

The equipment does have to ‘qualify.’  Qualifying equipment includes: most equipment (and machinery) for business use.  Can also be personal equipment used in the business.  Can consist of business vehicles, computers, software, office furniture, and office equipment.  Further, large manufacturing equipment and tools can also be expensed under this IRS Code Section.

Reducing your business income, means reducing the amount of income taxes your business pays.  Lower tax burden, higher profits!

Before Section 179, a company could only deduct or depreciate a small portion of the cost of equipment each year; dolling out the cost savings over many years.  Under Section 179, a business can deduct the entire amount, up to the 0,000 limit in the first year.  Think about this:  You deduct, under the old rules, a 0,000 pieces or pieces of equipment at 20%.  That amounts to a ,000 reduction in taxable income or, at 35% tax rate, a ,000 increase in net income.  On the other hand, deducting the entire amount reduces taxable income by the 0,000 purchase amount, resulting in, at 35%, a ,000 boost in profits!

Combine the Section 179 deduction of 0,000 for 2008 and a struggling economy where equipment manufacturers and vendors are reducing prices, this is the perfect time to obtain new business equipment.  Do not let this opportunity pass you by!

There’s Nothing Quite Like Common Sense Approach to Cooling Energy Reduction

In my previous articles on how to save energy from your air conditioning units, I have touched on some of the tasks you can do and also on some of the tasks that you need the expertise from Professionals.

In today’s article, I am going to show you some common sense approaches to getting the cooling you want without spending much money.

I have mentioned before in another article that heat must flow from a higher energy state to a lower energy state – simply put; it means that heat can flow from a hot object to a cold object and not the other way round. Essentially, this means that if your surrounding atmospheric air temperature is 30 degree C, the temperature of the air in the room need to be above this value in order for the heat to be transferred out.

This requirement is made used of in the principles of mechanical refrigeration by making the condenser coils hotter than the surrounding atmosphere and then cooling it down to atmospheric temperatures.

Shading the Condenser Units

With that in mind, it makes good sense not to let the condenser coils become heated more than it should. Sunlight shining on the exterior condenser units of your air conditioner will reduce its efficiency because radiant heat from the sun adds to the heat load.

You can make the system more efficient by shading this outside component of your split central air conditioning system with trees, shrubs, a fence or even a roof. For window air conditioning units, you can locate them on the north and/or east side of the house where the sun seldom shines. However, be sure not to restrict the airflow around the unit, because that’s how the cooling is done.

Increase Air Movement

Supplement your air conditioner with fans. The air movement in the room will make you feel cooler and allow you to raise the thermostat, thus reducing the air conditioner energy use.

However, do remember to turn off the fans, including ceiling fans, when you’re not in room. Leaving them on wastes energy and actually adds to the heat. Remember that ENERGY STAR qualified fans are not only energy efficient but are also quiet.

Nighttime Ventilation

Nighttime ventilation is another low-cost cooling strategy. If the temperature and humidity drop after the sun goes down, open the windows to exhaust indoor air and pull in cool outdoor air into the house.

Better still, you can install exhaust fans for this purpose. With timers set to start the exhaust fans at around 4 p.m. and stopping at around 7 a.m., the cool air of the night will be drawn into the interior of the home to cool down its walls, floors, and ceilings in the night. During the daytime, the cool interior mass of building materials will absorb the heat of the day to give a resultant cooling effect to the occupants.

The above measures will reduce the cooling load on an existing air conditioning unit. If you want to do more, here are some other ideas:

Installing Reflective and Insulated Roofing

During the day, the sun gives out a lot of radiant heat to the surroundings. By building thick walls with good insulating properties, installing reflective window glass to divert the heat away, painting walls with light colors and insulating roofing from the direct radiation of the sun, you can help reduce the heat absorbed by a building.

Shading from Trees

Careful orientation of the building can reduce the cooling load on air conditioning system by reducing the radiant heat absorbed by the sun.

In fact if there are more trees around, you will have a natural way of cooling. If you have been to a dense forest stream area, you will understand that the lush vegetation and moisture in the air and on the ground helps cool down the surrounding atmosphere. It’s not even low cost, it’s no cost cooling!

Nothing That You Write is a Waste

Ever wrote 1000 words of copy and, upon reviewing, decided that it’s utter rubbish? We’ve all had those days. Sometimes, the material we write just feels so off that we’d rather hit delete than try to fashion it into shape with the help of a writing software.

You are not alone unto that matter. All writers had already experience that situation. Just like you, every writer are trying to make it up to the required words or pages of content or any form of writings just to accomplish the task that was given unto you. But then, you need to read it all over again just to make sure that there are no errors in the spelling, punctuations and even with your grammars.

You also need to proofread these things to secure the correct format that you had applied in your writing. Though this is very important as a part of a writer’s task of checking the quality of his or her content, it is also the part where you might almost delete the entire sentence that you had just successfully completed.

That’s because while reading your piece, you might feel like you don’t need this sentence and that and then you will end up throwing your content away. This is really a waste if you do that even if you still have the chance to revise it well and make it a better sentence that before.

If you don’t know how to keep you contents after reading and revising it up again, you will surely put away all the efforts and time you had first applied on it while writing your piece. You don’t want to put it that way, right? Here is valuable advice that you’ll be best served hearing out, though: nothing that you write is ever a waste.

Instead of chucking the entire piece, I highly recommend just opening up another document for your second attempt. Regardless of how bad you think the original is, it carries innate value that can help you through the completion of the new piece you are doing.

For instance, the original copy you’ve written can serve as a reference for the updated piece. Instead of having to return to your notes or, worse, research again, you can simply use what you’ve previously written as your basis, since you’ve already did all the fact-checking while working on it. Additionally, rarely will you write entirely garbage pieces.

After the initial frustration you’re feeling has passed, you are more likely to notice a few well-written sentences and paragraphs among the flurry of words. If they fit in with the way you’re writing the new piece, you can simply cut and paste them. Instead of writing entirely from scratch, you can take the good parts from the previous version and use it to supplement your new one.

No work that goes into writing is ever a waste. Think about it – even the most badly-written pieces have allowed you to get a grasp of a subject. How bad is that?

Now, learn to value what you have started and created since all those writings came from your creative mind and ideas. After all, you can still create another piece with wonderful ideas that support the topic out of the first draft that you had made. It is useless to write if you damp all your drafts and start writing over and over again.
