Kinnser Software, leading Web-based home health software provider, announces today that the company will award $ 225,000 in scholarship funds to the Austin Community College (ACC) Foundation for students enrolled in the college’s Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) and Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) programs. Over the next five years, the Kinnser Software Scholars Program will award 90 recipients with a full scholarship each for tuition, fees, books and nursing program expenses.

Nurses play a vital role in meeting the health care needs of Americans, and demand for talented nurses continues to grow at a faster rate than the average for all occupations, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Colleges like ACC must work to maintain a steady stream of nursing graduates to meet increasing demand.

“Kinnser Software’s generosity will have a tremendous impact on students by helping them achieve their goals,” said Edwina Carrington, chair of the ACC Foundation. “In addition, this donation will benefit our community and the healthcare industry by ensuring a pipeline of skilled workers.”

Scholarships, like the Kinnser Software Scholars Program, are a great source of aid to nursing students looking to enter the profession without significant debt.

“When I founded Kinnser Software, I had a primary goal – to provide software that will help nurses and their home health agencies overcome the challenges they face in their daily work lives,” said Kinnser Software’s President Christopher Hester. “Now, with the Kinnser Scholars Program, we are excited to help nurses acquire the funds necessary for their education, which is often the first challenge many face before they can enter the profession.”

Sarah Foti, mother of three children, is one of ten ACC students who received the Kinnser Software scholarship funds for the fall 2011 semester. After receiving her General Educational Development (GED) in 2008, Foti chose ACC’s nursing program to pursue a career that would support her family. She is now in the last year of the ADN program.

“I am a very dedicated nursing student,” Foti wrote in a letter to Kinnser Software. “I have a lot of challenges right now. Going to school and being a single mother of three children is a constant struggle. I have to put my studies first a lot of the time in order to succeed. This scholarship is a blessing to me and my children.”

Scholarship recipient Wendy Jordan is currently enrolled in the LVN program and taking pre-requisite coursework for the ADN program. Jordan is a member of the National Student Nurses Association and is a Class President of the Fredericksburg, TX LVN Program. She and her husband were both laid off from the same company when they decided it was the right time for her to pursue her dream of a career in nursing.

“At a time in my life when I am struggling between family and getting an education for a second career, I have been so amazed at the generosity of the community,” Jordan commented. “And, how people I barely know, or have just met, step up to help or lend a helping hand. Your generous support will help toward tuition and books; I can only tell you how much this greatly appreciated.”

ACC’s nursing programs are accredited at the state and national levels, and students undergo classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences. The college’s nursing students consistently excel at national licensure exams. In the 2009-10 year, the overall licensure pass rate for ACC’s associate degree nursing and vocational nursing graduates was 100 percent (source: Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board). To apply for the Kinnser Software Scholars Program, applicants should complete the ACC General Scholarship Application (http://www.austincc.edu/foundation). Students must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA and financial need, as determined by the ACC Financial Aid Office. The annual application deadline is May 1.

Students at Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing can receive an advanced graduate degree, with the federal government picking up most of the expense, thanks to a recently awarded grant. The Nurse Faculty Loan Repayment Program is a supportive financial award that will pay up to 85 percent of graduate degree loans in return for four years of full-time employment as a faculty member in a U.S. school of nursing upon graduation.

Currently, there is a shortage of qualified faculty teaching in our nation’s nursing schools. The NFLRP is a federal grant (E01HP12990) worth more than $ 423,000, specifically designed to attract graduate nursing students to the classroom, first as a student and then as faculty.

Before enrolling at Loyola, Doctor of Nursing Practice student Kathy Wright, A.R.N.P., was like many other nurses who didn’t have the time or money to go back to school and earn a terminal nursing degree. She currently works three jobs, including her primary work with the Florida Department of Health Children’s Medical Services in Ocala, Fla.

“I always wanted to go back to school so I would be able to teach, but never thought I could afford it. Having access to affordable grants and loans gives me the opportunity to get an advanced degree that will allow me the opportunity to train the next generation of nurses,” said Wright. “The program being online is an enormous asset because I’m able to work and still be able to go through the program and meet all expectations. It’s very exciting!”

“Thousands of potential nursing students are turned away each year because of a critical shortage in qualified faculty in the United States,” said Ann Cary, Ph.D., director of Loyola’s Nursing Program. “The NFLRP’s tuition forgiveness is a direct incentive aimed at changing those numbers and putting more nurses in the classroom, both as student and teacher.”

The federal government also awarded the School of Nursing $ 124,000 in nurse traineeship grant money. This federal scholarship fund is designed to offset educational expenses for masters and doctoral students focusing on careers as primary care providers.

Loyola enrolled its first 25 post-master’s degree students this summer and anticipates growing to 125 students within five years.

The deadline for early admission to the 2011-12 DNP program is set for November 1, 2010.
