Being forced to leave school after the third grade to help his father raise crops and tend livestock to support their family was just one of the hardships Juan Valdez’s family experienced over the years. As a 9-year-old and for years thereafter, Juan was forced to sneak his family’s cattle onto forest pastures that had for decades been land grant common lands because his family, like so many other land grant heirs, had been denied the use of the land. On June 5, 1967, Reies Lopez Tijerina, a traveling preacher, lead Valdez and a group of followers into a courthouse in Northern New Mexico in an attempt to arrest the district attorney and bring national attention to the loss of decades-old land grants that had been denied protection under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This new book details the author’s view of how the United States unlawfully ended up with millions of acres of land grant acreage without even an offer of compensation or apologies for the taking.

Trespassers on Our Own Land, a comprehensive, comparative history of why and how the U.S. government suffered from its chronic affliction of Manifest Destiny, is structured as an oral history of the Valdez’ family and of the political history of the times. It flows from conversation to conversation as Valdez discusses his family’s history with a grandson –giving him lessons on survival, treaties and the government’s establishment of a court to take millions of acres of ancestral lands. He also discusses his views on the U.S. Forest Service’s treatment of the grant lands as its own private domain–and how its actions after 1905 reduced hundreds of land grant heirs to trespassers on their own land as they attempted to survive the travesty.

Trespassers explains in detail why and how the U.S. government selfishly removed millions of acres from the decades-old Spanish, Mexicans and Pueblo Indian grants, all the while acting as though the taking was lawful and appropriate. Drawing on government documents, maps, legal cases, articles and correspondence, Trespassers focuses like a laser beam on this very dark period in U.S. history, the results of which continue to resonate to this day.

Author Mike Scarborough, who has lived in northern New Mexico most of his life, served in the Air Force for eight years before attending college and law school. He practiced law for 25 years before retiring in 1998.

American Public University Offers 15 Academic Scholarships as Part of Career Stimulus Package

American Public University (APU) is partnering with eLearners.com on The Private Sector Career Stimulus Package, to help educate, empower and employ adult learners. Through this program, APU is offering 15 academic scholarships to ease the financial impact of pursuing and completing a respected online degree with APU, and to help empower and enable recipients to develop their careers or find meaningful employment. APU is a member institution of American Public University System (APUS), an accredited, affordable, online university system that educates more than 45,000 adult learners worldwide.

The comprehensive Career Stimulus Package will offer adults access to online education programs, including up to $ 4 million in full-tuition scholarships from partnering institutions, including APU, and job shadowing programs at participating U.S. companies. A 40-city RV “Empowerment Tour” will kick off in Denver, June 12, 2009 and end in Los Angeles on September 9, 2009. The Tour will offer free career coaching sessions and Education Stations where prospective students may apply for scholarships online, on the spot.

“A quality education is a key component to your career arsenal,” said Wallace E. Boston, Jr., President of American Public University. “We are happy to offer these scholarships to students who might not otherwise be able to afford to attend college. Our programs are structured with the working adult in mind, and we know a degree from APU will help them advance their career.”

APU is offering a total of 15 academic scholarships for new, first-time APU students to be applied in one of 74 Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs. Nearly all costs are covered. Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree scholarships will cover tuition and textbooks. Master’s degree scholarships will cover tuition only. Scholarship recipients are responsible for other applicable program costs and university fees.

Students will be required to write a 500-word essay describing their goals and why they want to obtain a degree. The deadline to apply for an APU scholarship is October 31, 2009. VetFran is a program started by the International Franchise Association as a way to give back to those who have served in the military. More than 300 franchise companies participate and will offer substantial discounts on fees and expenses to those who served our country. Also, there’s a government-established program called the Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative, whose purpose is to guarantee up to 85 percent of a loan made by a lending institution to a veteran or someone currently in the military and close to retirement.
