Canadian Business Banking – An Overview

Banking and business borrowing in Canada is significantly different than in the United States. That is primarily driven by the fact that our banking system is uniquely different. In the U.S., borrowing finance is driven through various entities – which include major ‘ money center banks ‘, Commercial banks, community banks, and what are know as S&L’s, ( savings and loans ). In addition the American landscape is populated by community banks.

The Canadian banking system is different, in that the country has chosen to adopt a more smaller ( by competitor ) banking system that is extremely concentrated and dominated by a handful of major players. Primarily these are:

* RBC ROYAL BANK,
* TD CANADA TRUST,
* CIBC
* BANK OF NOVA SCOTIA,
* BMO BANK OF MONTREAL,
* LAURENTIAN
* NATIONAL BANK OF CANADA

All of these banks support the Canadian Small Business Financing program sponsored by the federal government.

There is a decent sized credit union movement in Canada, and many of these credit unions are making forays into Commercial banking and financing. Many people tend to feel these credit unions have not yet accumulated either the talent or the capital pool to properly play in business banking and commercial lending.

We would point out that some time ago now the government introduced legislation to allow foreign banks to lend in Canada. These banks are known technically as ‘ SCHEDULE B ‘ banks, and are referred to a briefcase bankers in that they do not have the large branch networks that are the domain of our BIG 7 banks as listed above.

]]>

Capital for Canadian firms is traditionally much harder to secure in the Canadian banking system. Outside of the aforementioned CSBFL program that is federally underwritten the banks tend to secure small business loans with usually up to 100% of personal collateral. That of course has the customers pledging personal assets, savings, etc. There certainly are no ‘ templates ‘ for fast quick borrowing in the Canadian small business banking. Loan criteria is judiciously adjudicated by underwriters on a case by case basis, and as has been noted, relies heavily on the traditional three C’s of credit -

- character
- capacity
- capital

As the Canadian banks have emerged from the current world economic crisis they do however seem to be placing more focus on smaller firms. For example new divisions for small business banking are being created within some players, seminars and trade shows are being offered, and they often sponsor local events.

Larger firms who in many cases do not meet the requirements of the Canadian banks when it comes to significant borrowing requirements are often forced to consider asset based lending arrangements with Canadian and U.S. commercial finance companies who have stepped in to play a role in this vital area.Even though the larger firms may in fact have been in business a number of years their balance sheets and income statements do not meet the borrowing requirements of the Canadian loan committees. During the 2009 world economic crisis and financial meltdown the Canadian banks were consistently lauded for being some of the best run in the world. However, the downside of this is that ‘ best run ‘ in many cases means risk averse and commercial borrowing in Canada is significantly more difficult than in other countries such as the U.S.

The Canadian banks have distinguished themselves by developing software and technologies that have put them at the forefront of commercial borrowing/lending.

In summary, the Canadian banking system is uniquely structured and Canadian business, both larger and small,should focus on the unique strengths of the system borrowing and banking needs. Not all companies will be successful and business owners should ensure their financial executives or advisors know who can best meet their borrowing needs.

An Overview of Local Start Up Business Grants and Where How to Get Funding

Grants come in a wide array of sizes, for a broad array of purposes, from a myriad of sources. While most grant information rests at the Federal level, there are plenty of other sources of funding for a business startup out there. This article will focus on getting grants from your local community.

First, there are sound reasons for your local chamber of commerce and better business bureau to offer grants for businesses to start up – businesses employ people, and boosting the local job market is one of the important things your city government does. Even if your business just employs two part time shipping clerks, it still makes sense for your local business development center to host a grant program to help new businesses start out.

Likely candidates names for your local municipalitys business development center will be Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council, or Small Business Development Corporation. In addition to grant proposals, most of them have extensive libraries on things like local tax regulations, federal and interstate and state regulations you need to concern yourself with, local labor laws, and how to get your jobs listed in the want ads and local unemployment center. There are also organizations run by retired businesspeople that offer classes in starting a business, including step by step instruction on how to set up a business plan, how to handle your first two years taxes (where the capital put into the business can offset the revenue generated) and more. You can find out more about what resources your local area has for instructing small businesses and incubating them by going to the public library, or checking out your citys web site.

To get a local grant, you are going to have to demonstrate a mixture of enthusiasm and hardheaded business sense. Passion counts, but so does a demonstrated ability to plan, as does focusing attention on how your business needs will tie to local suppliers and supply chains, and will provide jobs for local people. Many municipalities have something analogous to the Community Development Block Grant Loan Program. How this works is that the municipality or county applies for a grant (called a block grant) from the Federal Government to do local spurring of business development, and then uses that funding as seed capital to make low interest or short term loans to local businesses to help them start out, provided they hire low income people from the area.

Many larger cities have programs like the one in Seattle, where for businesses that will employ more than 100 people, and will need new construction, can get grants for new construction if the buildings are Green, or LEED certified, minimizing construction waste and power usage.

Many grants are tied to non-profit organizations. You do not have to be a non-profit organization to benefit from such a grant; you can work with a local NPO to get the grant, under an agreement where they will use your firm for goods and services – this represents a triple win for the underwriting grant agency. It helps a non profit organization work on a project that ameliorates a problem they have been assigned money to fix, it helps you, by giving your company contracts for work to be done, and it helps the community by allowing you to hire more people to get the job done. The local restrictions on this sort of partnership are varied and numerous, and it is worth it to talk to someone at the local city hall to see what can and cannot be done without conflict of interest or collusion complications.

The last place to dig for grants (or the first one in some situations) is a local trade organization. If you are in a field with a vital services niche, and it is going unmet, it is not unreasonable to get grants from a business organization to open the type of business they support; it helps bring their profession into a higher profile, or represents moving into an untapped market to them.

All of these should help you find local grants that help you achieve your goals.

Get an Overview of the Types of Programs for Children that are Attracting Funding from Charitable Foundations, Company-Sponsored Foundations and Government Agencies

Dublin (PRWEB) January 26, 2006

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c31459) has announced the addition of Grant Funding for Children’s Health Services to their offering.

“Grant Funding for Children’s Health Services” is a new special report brought to you from the editors of Health Grants Funding Alert and the Health Funds Grants Yearbook.

From grants supporting programs to combat pediatric asthma, newborn hearing screening, and pediatric rehabilitation, to children’s health prevention efforts, combating teen depression, and support for children’s hospitals, millions of dollars in federal and foundation grants for services have been awarded and more is being planned.

“Grant Funding for Children’s Health Services” has filtered a broad range of grants for children’s programs to provide a “sampler” of the kinds programs that can and are being funded.

The editors have studied grants for children and youth made over the past five years to select the representative funding programs that help illustrate the potential for funding opportunities that exist. The grants range from modest amounts from $ 10,000 to grants in the millions of dollars.

This new special report provides an overview of the variety and types of programs for children and youth that are attracting funding from charitable foundations, company-sponsored foundations and government agencies. Leading sources as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Hasbro Children’s Foundation, the Mattel Children’s Foundation, and the General Mills Foundation are spotlighted.

“Grant Funding for Children’s Health Services” includes funding for programs that address current major concerns in children’s health including childhood obesity, physical activity, nutrition in low-income families, pediatric HIV/AIDS, and eating disorders.

If your healthcare organization is working on creating, strengthening or expanding your efforts in seeking funds for children’s health programs, “Grant Funding for Children’s Health Services” can help stimulate ways in which your organization can successfully obtain the funds you need. Whether your program is hospital-based, a home health service, or community-based, you can benefit from the information in this special report.

“Grant Funding for Children’s Health Services” is not a directory of grants or a “how to get a grant” publication. It is an illustration of the kinds programs that can and are being funded to show the opportunities for funding children’s health programs.

Business Federal Grant Overview and Top Website Sources

The Federal Government spends billions of dollars on grant programs to small businesses and home based entrepreneurs every year. There are also hundreds of millions of dollars of state grant aid available, and grants and contests hosted by the Small Business Development Corporation. While there are several sources for grant money for your small business, this article will focus on Federal Grants, as they are the mostly widely available.

Finding Federal Grants is not daunting because they are hard to find – its daunting because you can get buried in books and data. The first place to go is your local public library, and check out any of the -phone books- by Matthew Lesko. Another excellent place to start searching is the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, or CFDA, which lists agencies to contact for formula grants and project grants.

The CFDA has a web site (URL below), that will help you search for grants based on your needs and goals, and will then provide you with links for the information needed to apply.

12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.TYP_ASSISTANCE_DYN.show

Once you have found a potentially interesting grant proposal (or a dozen), contact the agency and find out if your proposal or project proposal meets their funding requirements, and if they still have funds available for disbursement, or any other questions you might have.

Assuming everything matches up, its time to fill out a Form 424, called the Application for Federal Assistance. This is the generalized grant application form for most Federal development grants; it is considered a baseline form. Some agencies may have other forms you will need to fill out as well. The CFDA has extensive help files on writing grant proposals and the proper forms and what needs to go into them to make them work.

In addition to the CDFA site, you should also check out Grants.gov. This is another search engine of federal grant opportunities; while theres some overlap in grants in both databases, theres an awful lot thats in one that isnt in the other.

There are also private directories that list federal grant opportunities; Matthew Lesko (mentioned above) is the largest public marketer of these directories; you have probably seen him on late night television, dressed in a purple suit with yellow question marks all over it. His books are regularly stocked in local public libraries, and while some of the information is dated, there are plenty of gems to be found there, and some excellent advice.

Other places to look for grant monies include foundations and non-profit organizations. Probably the best central clearing house of information on foundation and nonprofit organizations is The Foundation Center, particularly for its Foundation Grants to Individuals. This lists, all in one place, grants for individuals rather than non-profit organizations. There is a small subscription rate for the online service, and the book is available for purchase, and can be found in the reference section of the local library.

foundationcenter.org/getstarted/individuals.

One of The Foundation Centers more useful services is online courses on grant writing and researching grant opportunities. Some grant opportunities are open only to non-profit organizations; this is not as difficult a requirement as you might think; it is worth investigating if your business can work as a non-profit organization.

The $3000 Garage Sale: A Quick Overview for Aspiring Garagepreneurs

Call it whatever you like… Garage Sale, Yard Sale, Estate Sale, Tent Sale, Moving Sale, Rummage Sale. Whatever you call it and wherever you operate it, the Garage Sale seems to be the one retail channel that continues to thrive in every economic climate. Garage sales never goes out of style. And people love ‘em.

Think you can’t make serious money on a garage sale? Think again!

The first thing to understand is that a profitable garage sale — like any other profitable business — is not just dumb luck. Successful garagepreneurs know how to offer the right products at the right price at the right time…and cleverly promote each garage sale event.

There’s more to a successful garage sale than planting a Garage Sale! sign in your front yard and piling up a bunch of junk on a couple of card tables. Garagepreneurship is estimated to be a $2 billion per year industry — that’s right, industry. Some enterprising garagepreneur will make serious money this year.

The average profit for a weekend garage sale is $500 – $700. Does that sound good? Or do you aspire to make a few thousand dollars for a weekend’s work?
Earning $1000 for a weekend’s work is easier than it may seem. Earning $3000 is not only possible, it’s realistic…if you choose well, price it right, present it well, promote it cleverly, and offer your buyers a pleasant shopping experience.

DECIDE HOW MUCH MONEY YOU WANT TO MAKE

First things first…

Set a revenue goal will help you choose merchandise and devise a realistic expenditures budget. Which breed of garagepreneur do you aspire to be? The Purger? The Quick Cash Weekender? Or the Stealth Wealth Accumulator?

THE PURGER. Garagepreneurs whose primary garage sale objective is to purge their junky closets. Money is a distant secondary goal.

THE QUICK CASH WEEKENDER. The garagepreneur who wants to raise a few hundred dollars for a couple of days’ work. (Junk-purging is just a bonus.)

THE STEALTH WEALTH ACCUMULATOR. This is the garagepreneur who views each garage sale as a small victory: accumulate enough victories and you build a real business. The Stealth Wealther often rakes in several thousand dollars per sale…then does it again in a few months, or even a few weeks.

The Stealth Wealther is already planning the next one before the first one ends. Yes, the Stealth Wealther carefully plots each venture, markets aggressively, and knows how to cultivate — and capitalize — on resources.

Chances are, you’re not a Purger, or you probably wouldn’t be reading this article.

DO GOOD RECONNAISSANCE

Check with your city clerk and local codes enforcement department to determine if there are ordinances and regulations on operating garage sales. Some municipalities require permits, and may regulate the number of garage sales you can have, as well as the number of consecutive days the sale can run. There are almost always signage ordinances you should know about; for example, ordinances forbidding you to post flyers on utility poles and signs in government right-of-ways.

Spy on local garage sales, ideally over the course of several weekends. Study your competition’s advertising and promotional tactics, especially the successful competition.

DESIGN A FLOOR PLAN

Think like a retailer. Full tables and packed racks attract more interest and keep buyers interested longer, increasing the odds that you’ll sell almost everybody something.

LEARN HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT STUFF

A thought about Garage Sale Zen: A garage sale is a treasure hunt for shoppers. You must have some treasures. The serial garage sale shopper loves the thrill of discovering an unexpected treasure, at an affordable price.

As you’re gathering merchandise, always always Think Profit. Focus on profit, every step of the way.

The more inventory you have, the more successful your sale is likely to be. Massive inventory generates excitement and hedges your bet that you’ll have something for everyone.

FIND GOOD SUPPLIERS

Scout high-quality wholesale/discount suppliers & dropshippers — many offer discounts up to 85% off retail. Get catalogs. Analyze profit margins. (Free Quality Merchandise Suppliers list available in author’s resource box.)

DON’T FORGET THE ZEN OF GARAGE SALE PRICING

The fundamental Zen of Garage Sale Pricing is simple: People are shopping your sale because they expect to find bargains. As you construct a pricing theory, never lose sight of the fact that this is a garage sale, not a Sotheby’s auction. That doesn’t meant you can’t get top dollar for unique, sought-after items — you can. But you must learn how to choose wisely, so as not to erode your profit.

MARKETING MATTERS. THE FIVE Ps APPLY.

Yes, the garage sale is a commercial enterprise, a shopping experience. But for most garage sales shoppers, your sale is also recreation and a social event, all rolled into one.

Whether we like to admit it or not, we’re all susceptible to packaging. A compelling package draws shoppers to your sale, and encourages them to linger once they arrive. Invent ways to package your sale, as well as your items. Tailor your efforts and the ambiance of your event to accomplish your specific revenue goals.

You’ve probably heard of the Five Ps? When you’re marketing goods to the public — whether you’re garagepreneur or a multinational corporation — the Five Ps apply. (Technically, there are more than five, but marketers tend to have their favorite five.)

Product. Pricing. Promotion. Positioning. Publicity. Packaging. Pass-Along Permission.

Whether you’re a Purger, Quick Cash Weekender or a Stealth Wealther, this quick overview should get you started. If you’re a serious garagepreneur with serious revenue goals, you may need the complete $3000 Garage Sale Blueprint, which is available in Secrets of A Successful Garagepreneur: A Step-By-Step Guide to Making Serious Money on Garage Sales.

Good luck with that garage sale!
