Rising Price of Olympic Dreams Paints Dark Future for the Arts

In a week during which we learnt of the scornful opinion of football held by the celebrated thinker George Steiner, and in which the battle lines seemed to be drawn between the funding of the 2012 Olympic Games and the government’s subsidies to the theatre, it was comforting to read a newly published volume in which Roland Barthes, the great French philosopher, set down some of his thoughts on sport, and an even slimmer pamphlet, titled La Mélancolie de Zidane, in which the novelist Jean…#8209;Philippe Toussaint records his reaction to the defining event of the 2006 World Cup final.

Try this, from Barthes: “Sport is the entire trajectory separating a combat from a riot.” Or this, from Toussaint on Zidane’s famous head butt (in my very rough translation): “An instant of perfect ambiguity under the Berlin sky, a few seconds of vertiginous ambivalence, where beauty and darkness, violence and passion came into contact and provoked the short-circuit of an unforeseen gesture.”

Pretentious twaddle? Well, maybe. Sport and the arts make uneasy companions, with rare uncontested exceptions such as Tim Krabbé’s novel The Rider, Martin Scorsese’s film Raging Bull and the vivid paintings in which Nicolas de Stael set down his impressions of a post-war football match in the Parc des Princes between France and Sweden. But perhaps Barthes, in particular, has a few worthwhile things to tell us in the commentaries for a series of five short films on bullfighting, motor racing, the Tour de France, ice hockey and football, made for Canadian television more than 40 years ago under the title What is Sport? and now appearing in print for the first time.

Considering the particular popularity in Canada of ice hockey, a game he calls “faster than consciousness”, he writes: “To play hockey is constantly to repeat that men have transformed motionless winter.” The bullfight, he says, exists “to tell man why man is superior”. In a motor race, with its emphasis on extreme technology, “the relationship between man and machine is extremely circumspect: what will function very fast must first be tested very slowly, for speed is never anything but the recompense of extreme deliberation”.

He adds: “The death of a racer is infinitely sad, for it is not only the man who dies here, but a particle of perfection.” The Tour finds the riders helping each other “because, in this sport, resistance proceeds from things” – he means the clock and nature – “and not from men”.

Sometimes sport can gain from the perceptions of those who stand outside it. Jean-Luc Godard, for instance, had some interesting things to say about Nicolas Anelka a few years ago. But this is a week in which those involved in the promotion of sport to its current unprecedented level of popularity – yes, including newspaper columnists – should be bowing their heads in acknowledgment of its potentially dire implications for those involved in another field of human expression.

The true consequences of the ever-increasing budget for London 2012 were highlighted last week in a letter to this newspaper from the playwright David Edgar, who criticized the threatened cut in funding to the small but adventurous Bush Theater in west London. Ironically, the imperiled theatre can be found not much more than a hefty punt away from the stadium of Queens Park Rangers, where the combined fortunes of Lakshmi Mittal and Bernie Ecclestone are effecting an almost instant renaissance. The Bush, however, is just one of a number of victims, from one end of Britain to the other, that are finding themselves about to pay the price of London’s Olympic status.

When gifted artists, operating in an environment that is at best economically marginal, are forced to curtail their activities and traveling theatre companies are no longer able to take their productions into parts of the country that have no theaters or companies of their own, the price is too high, and the world of sport – where money flows like water – would do well to acknowledge as much. Otherwise the rift between the two cultures will shortly be growing rather deeper, which would be a pity.

Nostalgic image displays tradition lost in squabbles

The unveiling of this year’s Ferrari formula one car took place at the weekend in the workshops of the company’s racing department, an inner sanctum into which outsiders are seldom invited. So it was interesting to see its pristine whiteness – random splotches of oil are a thing of the past – decorated with giant glossy color prints of great moments from the Schumacher era.

There was a single exception to this celebration of recent triumphs. On the wall facing the stall containing the sparkling new F2008 was the room’s sole reminder of Ferrari’s earlier history, a large black-and-white photograph of two mechanics working in the factory on the last of the team’s front-engined grand prix cars, the beautiful Dino 256 of 1960.

One of the mechanics was recognizable as Ener Vecchi, a long-time member of the team. The other, according to my friend Pino Allievi, the correspondent of the Gazzetta dello Sport, was a man called Angellini. Perhaps the picture was put there by someone who wanted to remind the modern descendants of Vecchi and Angellini of the company’s matchless achievements, and of a tradition that still commands respect even in the squalid and squabbling world of today’s formula one.

Any Ferguson will do for shut-out Beeb

Among the attractions to be found in the Manchester United museum at Old Trafford, we are told, is a hologram of Sir Alex Ferguson programmed to answer questions and deliver reflections on his 21 years in the manager’s chair.

It’s an enticing thought, and the questions almost ask themselves. What was the true reason behind his sudden decision to offload Jaap Stam? Was it really the possibility of being succeeded by Sven-Goran Eriksson that persuaded him to rescind his decision to step down? What are his memories of the food fight in the tunnel at the end of the match against Arsenal a couple of years ago?

Then again, perhaps the BBC should be given the first go. In the light of Sir Alex’s continuing refusal to talk to the corporation in recent years, it’s probably the only way they’ll ever get any answers.

Team Murray proves grand slam for blazing Scot

Andy Murray’s victory at the weekend could be interpreted as the firmest possible riposte to those who questioned his decision to ditch Brad Gilbert in favor of a rotating posse of advisers. Murray does things in his own way, rather than the one recommended by the blazer-and-tie brigade, and it seems to be working.

Scene of the crime makes a world of difference

So the year started with yet another fatal stabbing of a teenager in London; there were almost 30 last year. Just imagine the fuss if, instead of taking place in the near-invisibility of grim housing estates, they occurred in or around football grounds. richard.williams@guardian.co.uk

The Rising Green Home Loan Market

Introduction

As Green issues increasingly play on people’s mind the desire to renovate defunct properties or build eco-friendly properties is growing. Mortgage lenders, who typically steered away from such projects, now recognise a growing market and many more are now willing to loan money to fund such projects. This article discusses the rise of the Green Home Loan and the complexities surrounding it.

Green Mortgages

Only a handful of specialist lenders are offering green home loans. These can either be loans that offer environmentally friendly perks, such as free energy savings reports, carbon offsetting and cash back for energy saving home improvements or those that fund large scale renovations of disused buildings and energy efficient new builds.

For larger projects people will still have there hands tied as to where they can go for a loan, but companies such as Ecology are happy to offer loans on smaller projects that other lenders won’t offer mortgages on. It will offer loans on log cabins or timber chalets and properties built using traditional materials like straw. It also offers loans to develop rundown houses, unused churches or derelict buildings. In the past the company has been known to fund projects to develop disused lighthouses, chapels, oast houses, water towers and barns.

One of the problems though of going to such companies, is that as they are dealing with niche loans, they will typically charge a higher rate of interest than for those found in traditional mortgages. Another problem is that companies offering green mortgages often find it difficult to carry out surveys or valuations. The lenders also find it difficult to establish whether they could resell the property in the event of payments defaults and subsequent repossession.

Recognising the growth in the market though, other companies like Norwich and Peterborough are now offering their own flavour of niche green mortgages. These companies offer green loans on new and existing homes with higher than average standards of energy efficiency or existing homes that buyers plan to make more environmentally friendly. Norwich and Peterborough’s green loans come with free energy rating surveys and perks such as cash back that can be used to improve the energy efficiency of the home.

Some lenders also have other sales gimmicks on their green loans, for example Norwich and Peterborough say they plant 40 trees for each green mortgage it sells and other lenders say they will plant one tree for each year you have the mortgage.

As concerns over climate change grow there are expected to be more and more lenders offering green home loans. The government is also launching various incentives for borrowers looking to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

Brokers warn that homeowners should be wary of just how much of what is offered on green loans is a sales gimmick and how much of it is actually a tangible benefit. Some brokers advise that people looking to take out a loan on a conventional property might want to take out a more competitively priced standard loan and then donate to a carbon offsetting scheme on their own. Unfortunately, if your dream home is unconventional like a log cabin, then you are more or less forced to go to one of the companies like Ecology. Ecology has a range of mortgages, including buy-to-let and interest only deals and for properties that have a commercial element or loans to buy woodland that the buyer wants to preserve. At the time of writing, interest rates for residential mortgages start at 6.15% and for buy-to-let at 6.4%. Ecology also offers discount from its standard rates if people are taking out the home loan to increase the energy efficiency of their property. Borrowers can get a 1% discount if they are doing things like modifying the floor, wall and roof to improve energy efficiency or if they are installing low water-usage appliances.

The way some of the Ecology schemes work is to offer an initial loan amount to fund the start of a project, which is based on the value of the property or planning permission and then, as the building work progresses, to reassess the property’s value and to issue further funds accordingly. There is an interesting array of sustainable and recycled materials used in the developments Ecology has funded. These have included material such as timber, straw, cob, rammed earth, reclaimed brick and stone. Some of the properties and even underground or built into the side of hills, while others may incorporate good insulation, triple glazing, efficient boilers and renewable energy systems such as solar panels and rainwater collecting systems.

Most green mortgages are only offered for up to 90% of the property’s value, but are offered on part-commercial, part-residential schemes like working farms. It is very rare for a green home loan to be offered at a fixed interest rate, or for holiday and second homes.

Adrian has worked for the last 20 years on a mixture of I.T. and finance related projects. He has built up a considerable reputation in his field for his knowledge of both corporate and personal finance. He is currently working for the secured loans group We Introduce You.

Rising From the Wreckage: How Microfinance Services Help in Times of Trouble

Eduarda Rodriguez watched helplessly as her livelihood went up in an ominous tower of flames. She had been slowly building up her market stall business in this back corner of the Mercado Huembes in Managua, Nicaragua for over a decade. The vegetable stall, though humble, was the lifeline that supported Eduarda and her nine children. And, just like that, the fire reduced it to a bed of smoldering embers.

As we witnessed in Haiti this year, calamity often lurks just around the corner for the 2.7 billion people worldwide living on less than $2 a day. Whether victims of an earthquake in Haiti, a market fire in Nicaragua, a famine in Sub-Saharan Africa or a tsunami in South Asia, those who have the least usually stand to lose the most. In a matter of minutes, homes are swept away, businesses are reduced to rubble and dreams of a better life go up in smoke.

Microfinance is not emergency aid. However, it is well-positioned to be a source of support and stability to people who live in poverty after they endure a disaster. ACCION’s 23 partner microfinance institutions are firmly established in some of the world’s poorest communities and can quickly mobilize assistance to their combined 3.3 million clients when disaster strikes. And microfinance isn’t going away—sustainable by design, it provides a permanent stream of responsible financial tools.

Diversifying Microfinance Services to Meet a Variety of Needs

Increasingly, the microfinance institutions ACCION builds and supports can offer clients financial safety nets to help them deal with disasters in a diversity of ways—including with grants, microcredit, interest-earning savings accounts, insurance policies and remittances services. Following the January earthquake in Haiti, ACCION’s longtime partner microfinance organization, SOGESOL, quickly mobilized its staff to search for clients in affected areas. Walking the devastated streets of Port-au-Prince, Leogane, Petit-Goave and Jacmel, SOGESOL staff located each surviving client and helped them assess the damage to their home and business. Leveraging relationships with international partners like ACCION, SOGESOL was then able to issue grants to clients to facilitate the rebuilding process.

Microfinance has a role to play in helping people deal with calamity in other, subtler, ways as well. ACCION and other microfinance providers are pioneering the delivery of savings accounts to people who have never before had access to a safe, secure place to store their earnings.

To help bring savings accounts to millions more people, ACCION has initiated a sweeping new program, supported by a $5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, that will extend savings accounts to more than one million people in Latin America within the next five years.

We have also invested heavily in the emerging area of “micro”insurance. Offering health, life, crop and a variety of other types of insurance policies that start as low as $1 per month, microinsurance providers are proving that the poor are worth insuring, that they are capable clients and that the demand is there.

For our part, ACCION has invested millions in ParaLife, a microinsurance holding company that specializes in providing insurance policies to low-income and disabled people, and LeapFrog Investments, the world’s first microinsurance fund for companies that insure people living with HIV in Africa.

Over the last six years, ACCION has also studied the impact that remittances, or money transfer services, can have among the world’s poor in times of need. Remittances represent a significant amount of resources in poorer countries: In 2006 immigrants in the United States sent more than $300 billion to family members in Central and South America. Sending money via a microfinance institution allows recipients to leverage funds and take advantage of other financial products—such as savings accounts, home improvement loans, and microinsurance—that can serve as safety nets for the poor.

Out of the Ashes, a Better Business Grows

When particularly hard times hit, the world’s poor need all the assistance the local and global communities can raise. We at ACCION recognize the unique role that microfinance has to play and are committed to making sure people have a place to turn for responsible and reliable financial services when they need them most.

Thankfully, Eduarda’s story did not end with her and her family living in destitution. Financiera FAMA, ACCION’s partner microfinance institution in Nicaragua, was quick to step in after the market fire that destroyed her stand. They offered her an emergency microloan that she applied, along with her tenacity and ingenuity, to restore her business to profitability and move forward toward a better future.

What You Need to Know About Rising Food Costs

A lot of us are aware of rising food costs and if you are on a low income or you have a large family, this can make cooking a healthy, interesting dinner every night a bit like a juggling act.

A lot of foods are more expensive than ever, including staples such as beef, chicken, milk, and butter. There are various reasons for these price increases. The rising energy costs mean that food is more expensive to process and to deliver to retail outlets so the end price reflects this.

A lot of countries have better living standards than they had previously, including China and India, and these countries are importing more of our produce. Ethanol is more expensive and is used to grow produce such as corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, and oats, making the prices of those go up too. Sometimes there seems to be no food cost control because there seems to be no end to the price increases.

Animals eat grains so the price of beef, chicken and more is on the up because the animal has cost more to feed. Grains such as corn and oats are used in breakfast cereals so these now cost more and so does the milk to pour over it!

How to Make Your Money Go Further

If you are low on money but still want to give your family high quality, nutritious meals, there are a few things you can do. First of all, why not plan the week’s meals ahead of time and shop for all the ingredients? Try to include plenty of grains and fresh produce because these are nutritious and filling.

Chicken has always been economical and you can make a tasty meal like fried chicken, corn on the cob and potato salad very cheaply. Chicken is actually very versatile to cook with and you can make all kinds of sauces to go with it as well as cooking it in different ways, such as grilling, frying, baking, poaching and more.

If you have ever read the history of Kentucky Fried Chicken you will know they started very small but managed to transform cheap ingredients into delicious meals. You can do the same and made KFC style recipes for the family. This is certainly cheaper than taking them out for fast food and fried chicken is very simple to make. For a healthier twist, oven fried chicken tastes just like deep fried chicken but is lower in both fat and calories.

Vary What You Eat

Easy and healthy meals like stir-fry do not use big pieces of chicken or meat, so they work out cheaper than meals where you have a full piece of meat or fish per person. You might want to have a simple pasta or rice dish four times a week and something meatier the other nights. This is a better solution than “feast and famine” where you eat like kings for a few weeks then realize you only have enough money for cans of baked beans for the rest of the month.

Homemade food is healthier and cheaper than eating out or buying prepackaged food or TV dinners. Making your own meals means you know what ingredients your family is consuming and you can tweak the recipes to suit their individual tastes or make double and freeze it, to save having to cook another night.

Hot Water Bath Water Rising Values of Some Products Still Immature

Recently, the price Zhangshengyipian led to consumers, industry and so much attention. It is reported that Beijing intends rose 0.9 yuan per ton price of water for the residents of a large amount of water will have a huge impact, how to save water, energy conservation has become a hot topic nowadays.
Domestic water, the bathroom is the first to the water, “big”, sanitary ware, sanitary ware and electrical appliances such as washing machine water can not be overlooked. It is understood that toilet water consumption accounts for 60% of domestic water to 70%, especially the toilet tank is too large is an important factor causing excessive water use.

Recently, the state has clearly laid out nine liters and 9 liters of flush toilets, water saving toilet flushing water can only reach a 6 liter, more than 6 promoted to non-water-saving products, a total ban on listing. Reporters in the major building materials stores that almost all businesses have played sanitary “water” slogan, 6 l, 3 / 6 liters, 4.8 liters, 4.5 upgrades are stunning, in addition to saving sanitary ware, water faucet, flower spending was significantly increased number of brands, sales staff told reporters that when some consumers buy sanitary ware are also very concerned about water-saving performance.

A great variety of water-saving products flowers are in bloom, but consumers are buying up feeling difficult, “the general is to look at the brand, and then listen to Shopping guide personnel, no knowledge, do not know,” Ms. Zhang told reporters visiting the shop.

In a home network has initiated water-saving sanitary ware, bathroom shopping survey, 76.3% said they do not understand the water-saving sanitary survey, bathroom, little is known about its water-saving principle, in purchasing water-saving sanitary ware, bathroom time, Only 36.5% of consumers said they would consider water-saving targets, while 60.3% of consumers are buying based on brand sanitary ware, bathroom.

Not difficult to see, although the present water-saving sanitary ware, sanitary ware have become mainstream, but the consumer’s attitude is not completely water-saving as a guide, but more value price and appearance. According to industry sources, with the water price increases, water saving products will undoubtedly usher in a market peak, but the current water market, water saving products, water-saving performance has been mixed, easy to trouble for consumers.

Some Water-Saving Products Immature

Journalists in the building materials market, understand that the 3 / 6 liters double bond double red wares to the mainstream consumer product purchase, 3 / 6 liters flushing sanitary manner mostly dashed style is also part of the consumer will try to 4.8 liters , 4.5 liters of “super water” sanitary ware, sanitary ware to use more of these, or siphon siphon jet flushing, flushing more intense, red shooting ability further, the noise is relatively small, but the relative prices of some dashed-type ware slightly higher.

In addition to water-saving sanitary ware, a number of taps also increase the resistance and by using methods such as foaming device to reduce the actual tap water flow, water flow without compromising the feel, to achieve water-saving purposes. The past, the more common use in public places for Induction taps have begun to prevail in the market. Unfortunately, due to varying levels of water-saving products, water products directly lead to vastly different performance.

As the production technology, as well as differences in water-saving design, water saving products market is not pure, although some businesses that their products are water-saving products, particularly sanitary ware, use still requires repeated washing, the actual water consumption great. A ceramic Ma Xiaogang, director of marketing, told reporters, water saving sanitary ware really need from ceramic glaze, flushing capacity and water consumption control many aspects of design and development.

Ma Xiaogang said, some technical, financial strength and not enough business in water-saving products of inputs and technical research on the difficulties, lead to the production of sanitary ware glazed Bugou smooth, easy to hang dirty, easy to produce visible mold, Er Ye Hui cause internal Shejibudang inadequate sanitary flushing capacity, dramatically reducing the rate of one-time rinse must be repeated flushing, and some 6 liters, or 3 / 6 liters sanitary regulations appear to meet the national water-saving requirements, but “part of the low rate of 6 liters ware a rinse the need to wash again, this way would require 12 liters of water or more water than the existing products more non-waste. “

In addition, the reporter also found that some stores in some thousand dollars below the ware is also known as “water-saving performance good”, a brand of sanitary ware and general manager, said the spring side, the current water-saving sanitary ware at the factory is no mandatory water testing price can not be the sole judge sanitary water performance standard, “but only some of the most exaggerated of the sanitary water 2,3 l unreliable, difficult to achieve such sanitary flushing requirements of 12.5 meters, easily lead to blockage the problem. “

Online Degrees – A Rising Trend In Education

Sloan Consortium, an organization dedicated to quality online education, stated in its fourth annual report on the state of online learning in U.S. higher education that nearly 3.2 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall term of 2005.

The report went on to add that more than 96 percent of the largest institutions – those with over 15,000 total enrollments – have some online offerings. According to the report, public and larger institutions have constantly been the frontrunners in offering online courses.

Without a doubt, online education has traveled a long distance away from the days when degrees earned though this mode faced bias from academic and corporate leaders. An increasing number of chief academic officers today believe that the quality of online education is superior or at par with the quality of classroom learning.

So, who constitute this growing online student community and what are they studying? Interestingly, according to the Sloan report, the mix of students who prefer online mode is different from the traditional student community. Online students often tend to be older, working full time, and have family responsibilities. Online education has opened new vistas for these students, who otherwise would have found it difficult to get a college education.

According to Sloan-C, majority of online students study at the undergraduate level. Within the undergraduate bracket, the number of students who earn an associate degree online is higher than those who enroll in an online bachelor degree.

The proportion of students who complete online master’s degrees is comparatively lower. But what’s interesting to note is that more students enroll in online master’s degree as compared to traditional graduate-level degrees.

This clearly points to a rising trend among students to take the online route for earning an advanced degree and gaining expertise in their field. The reasons could be many – greater acceptance, improved quality, unparalleled flexibility, better work-life balance, greater affordability, and a chance to earn even as you learn.

With corporate supervisors also shedding their skepticism about online degrees and treating them at par with classroom degrees, online students no longer face the same prejudice in the job market that they used to a few years ago.

Many fields, that were once considered a bastion of classroom type traditional learning, now have online offerings. These include nursing, healthcare administration, business administration, accounting, graphic arts, etc. Students who complete these degrees online find ample employment opportunities once they graduate. Moreover, institutes of repute also offer employment assistance to help their students find job openings in their chosen field.

In today’s competitive job market when employers are looking to hire people who have the entire package of academic knowledge, hands-on experience, and industry expertise, online degrees offer an excellent opportunity to enhance job prospects.

In fact, many modern day employers understand that online degrees often need students to be more disciplined, motivated, and self-starters adept at multi-tasking. And which manager wouldn’t want someone with those characteristics on his or her team? The writing on the wall is clear – online education is here to stay and all set to change the education landscape of this country.

The Rising Popularity of Biodiesel Fuel

With the rising price of gasoline these days the idea of turning to a more affordable alternative fuel source is becoming more appealing to many people. Biodiesel fuel is an alternative fuel that many people are making right in their own backyards from renewable sources that are readily available.

Another alternative fuel that is in the news these days is ethanol. Ethanol is being sold in the U.S. and in other countries as a viable alternative to regular gasoline but if you don’t have access to an ethanol station or don’t have a car that has been modified to run on it then another choice is needed. Biodiesel is the perfect fuel to fill that spot because of the ease with which it can be made.

If this is your first exposure to biodiesel then a little explanation of what it is in order. Biodiesel is a fuel that is mode from vegetable oil that can be used in cars and truck with diesel engines. Depending on the manufacturer you can purchase vehicles that are made specifically to run on biodiesel fuel. You can also get biodiesel conversion kits that allow you to use this alternative fuel in diesel engines that aren’t built towards the biodiesel specification and in many cases these cars and trucks will run on biodiesel without any modifications.

This relatively new fuel source can be made from a number of renewable oils such as vegetable, canola or soy. In fact waste oil from restaurants and other establishments that use vegetable oil can also be used. It does take longer to process used oil but the results are the same. The vegetable oil is run through a processor that will turn it into biodiesel fuel. These processors can be purchased as kits which can cost several thousand dollars. But when you think about how much you pay at the pump each year it’s easy to see that recouping the cost of making your own fuel will take only a few years.

There is a multitude of information on the internet today about biodiesel fuel. If producing it is something you are considering then spend some time researching not the processes involved but also the different processing kits available. Many companies will ship a biodiesel fuel processing kit right to your front door, but be sure of what’s involved before you lay down your money.

With the right research and information you can soon be on your way to producing a renewable energy source that is considered one of the most clean burning fuels available on the market today. And you can do it in your back yard.

Do you want to know more about biodiesel fuel and how to make it? Click here and find out all about biodiesel.
