Scotts Valley Self-storage Operator Saves Life Of American College Student In India

Most of us do not think of self-storage as our first line of defense against malaria – but, you never know. Scotts Valley, California self-storage operator David English, who works at the Extra Space Storage facility on Santas Village Road, ended up saving the life of a tenant who was wasting away with malaria.

It all started when a young college student came in to English’s facility to rent a small five by five unit to store his dormitory things for the summer. He was planning to spend the summer traveling and was very excited. He was going to India. English helped the student set up autopayments on his unit, using a credit card, wrote down the student’s email address (“Email was a new thing for us to obtain back then,” he remembers) and placed it in his files. English still thinks about what happened next.

“Two months went by,” English recalls, “and one day I was doing my daily task list on the computer and I saw that his credit card was declined with a note to contact the bank. I figured that he overspent and waited a few days for funds to be placed in his account before I tried again. Well, his credit card was declined again and again.”

Not wanting the enthusiastic young student to have to pay a late fee, English sent an email to India asking what the tenant would like him to do. Three days later, he received an urgent reply. “He had either lost or had his passport and credit card stolen from him,” says English. “He had malaria and had not eaten in several days. He could not reach his mom, as he had no money, and was worried that he would starve to death and had no way home.”

The student told English he was very grateful to receive the email. He begged English to please contact his mother in Washington State, because she did not have a computer and did not know how to use one. English was happy to oblige. The student’s mother paid his rent, and thanked English for the message. He explained to her where the student was in India, and how he could be reached.

A month later, the student walked back into the Extra Space facility. “He finally came back into the office,” laughs English, “and said: ‘Remember me? you saved my life in India and I want to kiss your feet!’ Of course I did not let him kiss my feet and told him no thanks was necessary, as it was just part of my job! I still think about this event every so often, it makes me laugh!”
