Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) September 12, 2011

G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has awarded Herzing University the designation of Military Friendly School for the third straight year. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military servicemembers and veterans as students.

“We are very committed to serving those who serve our country, and are gratified to be recognized among the top colleges and universities in the country for active military and veterans,” said Renee Herzing, president, Herzing University. “Our founder and our chief academic officer are both proud veterans with specialized experience who have helped us to create a welcoming environment that supports the unique needs of military personnel and their families.”

All 12 Herzing University locations in the United States and Herzing University Online are Veterans Administration approved. They offer credit for College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) and give American Council on Education (ACE) credit for military training and experience. Herzing University offers financial benefits, support to specific military installations, and specialized staff including veteran advisors who assist veterans with career placement. The university also allows military students to resume their studies without penalty after being called to active service.

“The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools will offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience,” said Derek Blumke, president of Student Veterans of America and a member of the Academic Advisory Board. “This is especially important now with so many schools competing for military students.”

In addition to other educational funding options, Herzing University offers the Military Appreciation Grant that covers up to 20 percent of tuition, and the Henry G. Herzing Scholarship for Severely Injured Servicemembers.

The 2012 G.I. Jobs list of Military Friendly Schools® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. In its effort to help student veterans find the right school, G.I. Jobs incorporated a survey of student veterans into its selection process for the first time this year. This feedback provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a particular institution based on peer reviews from current students. Student veteran survey feedback can be viewed at http://www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/2012list.

Michael Dakduk, Executive Director for Student Veterans of America agrees. “The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience. Nothing is more compelling than actual feedback from current student veterans.”

A full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools® will be highlighted in the G.I. Jobs annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and on a poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. The newly redesigned website, found at http://www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the list, interactive tools and search functionality to assist military veterans with their school decisions. Service members and veterans can also meet individual student veterans from the various schools virtually on the site to learn more about personal school decisions and the transition from the military to an academic environment.

About G.I. Jobs

G.I. Jobs (http://www.gijobs.com) is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business which also publishes The Guide to Military Friendly Schools, Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines and annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”

Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) August 30, 2011

While the student and teacher population were off on summer vacation, Shmoopers (who are pale even at the end of August) were hard at work in the mountain shafts mining literary gems for intellectual consumption. Some nuggets Shmoop proudly present to students and teachers alike in honor of the first weeks back.

From the Young Adult Files:

The Graveyard Book is the story of Nobody “Bod” Owens, an orphan who is raised in a graveyard by dead people and supernatural beings. As students might have already guessed, the author admits that he was really, really into The Jungle Book.

From Lit:

Love in the Time of Cholera seems infinitely relatable to the high school condition. Even as the characters in the novel age, their thoughts, feelings, and interactions are so familiar to society today. Florentino constantly has love on the brain.

Is there anything that will impress the ladies or gents more than a claim that you have actually read – and understood – the great masterwork of Western literature? Imagine cruising the night scene with some prepared segues: “Oh, really? That’s very interesting. It’s just like Tolstoy writes in War and Peace.”

From Bestsellers:

Here is the situation in Ender’s Game: After aliens attack Earth, the government decides to train some special kids in how to defeat the aliens. This training is done primarily through playing games. Awesome.

From Poetry:

“The Charge of the Light Brigade” is a serious classic, one of the most famous war poems of all time. That means that generations of people have turned to this poem as a way to celebrate heroism.

From Shakespeare:

Still want that last bit of summer?

Like the modern-day romantic comedy genre it’s helped to shape and influence, A Midsummer Night’s Dream features young lovers who fall comically in and out of love in a ridiculously brief period of time (over the course of a single, enchanted midsummer night).

Of course, we have much beyond the world of lit.

For College:

Not counting on the stock market gains to pay for college? Nobody can. Check out Shmoop’s Guide to College Admissions, including financial aid and scholarships. Have Mom and Dad take a look at how to save for college while working on that application.

From History:

If you believe love is a battlefield, check out some new areas on Shmoop, which features, of course, battles.

In case you were curious about the battles we are still fighting, Shmoop takes a look at the War on Terror.

We also have our first foray into video. Let us know what we should do for our second.

The concept of free money for college can be seen from many positive and negative points of view. It is a long term governmental investment, it will lead to a rise in a countries intelligence which will in theory further lead to a rise in human capital and a higher Gross Domestic Product. Moreover, even for the average student, the idea of getting a job and earning cash is extremely tempting. At such a young age there is little incentive to do something that they will benefit from in 3 years time when they graduate. The free money for college concept will give students an extra incentive and more motivation. Furthermore, education is a right and it should not be dependant on the income status of the parent. Free money for college allows children who have been raised in poverty to realize that they do have a future.

For many, It will be a chance to escape which potentially could lead to a decrease in crime in many of these areas. The Netherlands has successfully implemented this concept, the universities are mostly public and at a very low cost for the individual. Students all receive a small contribution from the government along with public transport card valid for transportation within the country. Furthermore the amount given is dependant on the guardians financial status. If the student comes from a low-income family evidence is given and more money is given to the student; the amount is also dependant on whether the student lives cost-free at home or in student accommodation. Additionally, the money is granted for a maximum of four years and the student must finish a degree within a ten year period, otherwise it must be paid back to the government.

Free money for college is a great concept, yet there is no such thing as ‘free money’ and the question needs to be asked; who will pay for this to be implemented? The Netherlands happens to have one of the highest tax rates in the World. Additionally, the dispensable income of the average Dutch citizen is significantly lower than the rest of the world. It will be the citizens who will be paying for this, and not necessarily with agreement. To conclude, government spending is always a trade off, does every man fight for him-self? Or does the government increase taxes so that every man is given an equal starting chance and free money to students can be given? If taxes are not increased, the free money could be given but then pensions, unemployment benefits or social housing could be the trade off. The choice of government spending comes down to people’s values, and what the majority believe needs government assistance.
