Moms Are Big Spenders as Kids Return to School According to New Survey

Moms Are Big Spenders as Kids Return to School According to New Survey

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 9, 2005

Moms will be giving their credit cards some exercise as they get ready to send their kids back to school this year. They are smart shoppers and they are spending big, according to a new survey conducted by ClubMom (http://www.clubmom.com), the free national membership organization for moms. Most moms (72%) are spending up to $ 300 per child on their back-to-school items including clothes, notebooks, backpacks, lunchboxes, and other must-haves. Twenty-four percent of moms will spend $ 300 or more per child.

Monica Bernstein, ClubMom’s Mom Expert, helps moms give their spending habits a break by encouraging them to take advantage of warehouse stores and sales. “Then, it’s easy to stock up on items needed throughout future school years,” says Bernstein. “Buying a pack of 200 number 2 pencils won’t seem as silly when you only have to buy them once every three years!”

Shopping with Mom

Summer is coming to a close and before moms know it, their kids are pleading for the latest backpacks, sneakers, and other “hot” back-to-school essentials. While moms love to make their children happy, they aren’t budging. Half of moms say they have the most influence over the items purchased for back-to-school, while only 8% say their children are the biggest influence.

Moms realize that their kids aren’t to blame – 44% of moms either “strongly agree” or “somewhat agree” that their children feel pressured by other kids to wear certain clothes, or carry the newest backpacks and lunchboxes. Nearly 50% of moms think school uniforms would eliminate the pressure to wear certain clothing.

It’s Mom Time

This year’s first day of school will be a breeze for the kids; it’s mom who will be clinging to her children at bus stops across the country. Only 5% of moms will feel relieved when their children go back to school. Thirty-two percent of moms will feel sad because their children are growing up too fast before their eyes. For mom to avoid feeling like she is missing out on her children’s days while at school, ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests that she volunteers in the classroom, or simply gets involved with the PTA.

Even so, after spending the entire summer with their children, 31% of moms are looking forward to getting back into their normal “mom” routines. What is on mom’s agenda now that the kids are hitting the books? Moms will have more time to do the chores and errands (50%), spend time alone (28%), and hit the gym (16%). Working moms will be able to get to work earlier or on time (25%).

Both Better and Worse Than in Mom’s Day

A whopping 84% of moms are happy with the education their children are receiving. Forty-six percent feel the quality of their children’s education is better than the education they received while growing up.

What’s not up to par, and one of their biggest concerns, is their child’s safety. A strong majority of moms (67%) feel that their children are less safe than while they were in school.

While no one can eliminate every potential danger from a child’s life, moms can take some steps toward prevention. ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests the following safety tips:

Go over the “Stranger Danger” rules with your kids: 1. Say no! 2. Get away! 3. Tell someone! 4. Sometimes you need to yell!

Put your child’s school through the paces of the School Safety Checklist, found at http://www.clubmom.com, for assurance that your child will be in a safe environment.

Practice role-playing dangerous scenarios with your children on a weekly basis. Use silly voices to make it engaging, while also getting your important message across!

To make schools even better for their children, the majority of moms (61%) would like to see smaller class sizes, followed by more interaction between parents and teachers (42%), and more enrichment classes like music and art (34%).

School Lunch Surprises

Surprisingly, half of moms think their children’s schools serve a nutritious lunch. However, 46% of moms are still packing the standard “brown bag” lunch, while only 28% give money to their children for a hot lunch in the school cafeteria. Among those who pack a lunch for their child, 40% make a deli meat sandwich and 30% rely on the good old, quick and easy, peanut butter and jelly!

Remembering kids love to dip, ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests moms think outside of the brown paper bag and pack baby carrots with hummus or dressing, or apples with yogurt to dip into. Complete the meal with a thermos full of chicken or tomato soup.

Putting a Stop to Too Much TV and Video Games this School Year

When the school year begins, the summer games come to an end. The majority of moms (80%) put their foot down and place restrictions on the amount of time their children spend watching TV and playing video games.

However, these fun times aren’t completely abolished! Forty-two percent of moms allow their children to watch TV and play video and computer games only after their homework and chores are completed.

To help moms keep their children from vegging out in front of the TV or playing video games for hours on end, ClubMom’s Bernstein suggests that moms set up a token system. For each chore completed, like making the bed, your child gets a quarter. Then, he/she can choose to either save the quarter or turn it in for the privilege of 1-hour of TV or time playing video games.

ClubMom surveyed moms via an online poll of members between July 25 – 31, 2005. The total sample size was 1,209 moms.

Survey Finds 81% of Americans Believe the Government is NOT Doing A Good Job Of Telling About Available Money Programs

Rockville, MD (PRWEB) July 11, 2005 -

thirds of Americans indicated in a recent national survey that they believe the government has financial programs they would be eligible for but don’t know enough about them to apply – primarily because the government is not doing a sufficient enough job of letting Americans know. The survey was conducted by the University of Connecticut, Center for Survey Research and Analysis.

These recent survey results reveal that many Americans think the government is doing a poor job of letting people know about government financial assistance programs. Of the 1,000 people surveyed, nearly half (48%) earning more than $ 75,000 annually, believe they are eligible for money they don’t know about. A significant majority of both Democrats (73%) and Republications (60%) believe there is money available they are unaware of. And more people under the age of 44 (72%) than over the age of 60 (56%) believe there is unknown money due to them.

“During these tight economic times when families are watching each and every penny they earn and spend, it is crucial for Americans to know what monies are available to them,” says Matthew Lesko, New York Times Best Selling author and consumer advocate who works to educate Americans about free government money. “It is imperative for all Americans to know what they have access to.” Do You Think You Are Eligible For Gov’t Financial Programs But Don’t Know How To Get Them?*

Yes 65%

No 27%

Don’t Know 7%

U of Connecticut Survey

Recent studies by the government itself and other research organizations show that over 50 million consumers don’t know to take advantage of programs that they are legally entitled to including:

4 million senior citizens can receive up to $ 1,000 from Medicare but they don’t apply because they are unaware of the program (http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d04363.pdf)

6 million families are missing out on free health insurance for their kids (http://www.kff.org/medicaid/loader.cfm?url=/commonspot/security/getfile.cfm&PageID=28333)

10 million families can get up to $ 4,000 a year for groceries but don’t apply (http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d04346.pdf)

8 million college students can receive grants and low interest loans but don’t apply (http://www.acenet.edu/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Press_Releases_2004&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=3245)

Single moms can receive some of the $ 673 million in collected unclaimed child support payments (http://www.gao.gov/highlights/d04377high.pdf)

29 million senior citizens don’t know they can get colonoscopies, bone mass measurement, prostate cancer and glaucoma tests paid for by Medicare (http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d03958.pdf)

According to the United States Government budget data for 2005*, the government gives out over $ 1.5 Trillion a year in money programs to individual taxpayers, and only 12% of this money goes to the poor**. This is an average of over $ 11,000 for every U.S. taxpayer. And this figure continues to grow every year no matter who is in the White House.

Methodology:

This survey was sponsored by New York Times Best-Selling Author Matthew Lesko. The results are based on a representative national telephone survey of 1,000 adult Americans, conducted by the University of Connecticut, Center for Survey Research and Analysis. The survey was conducted April 20 to May 2, 2005 and has a margin of error of + or -3.2%”.

Survey indicates that nursing shortage is a concern to many

Survey indicates that nursing shortage is a concern to manyEnlarge Image

America is in the midst of a nursing shortage that is expected to get worse as baby boomers age and the need for health care increases. Complicating the nursing shortage problem is the fact that nursing schools across the country are having difficulty maintaining enrollment levels that are sufficient to meet the projected demand for nursing care.

Based on a recent survey, it is common knowledge that there is a nursing shortage and this is viewed as a serious issue. The study revealed that 75% of Americans think that the nursing shortage is a very real and very important health care concern. The general view is that the nursing shortage will have a negative effect on health care services. The poll indicates that 81 percent of the population is acutely aware of the nursing shortage and fully 65 percent believe that the nursing shortage is nearing crisis levels.

The survey also found that, despite the nursing shortage most Americans are confidant that nurses’ opinions on medical issues are highly credible and that the nursing profession is generally respected and admired. Because of the nursing shortage there are many more nursing positions available than can be filled. This is despite the fact that average nurse salaries match up quite well with other professions.

Many potential solutions, such as travel nursing, are being developed to address the current nursing shortage. The position of travel nurse was created more than 20 years ago in order to address shortfalls in staffing in states that experienced dramatic swings in seasonal population. Now, being a travel nurse is regarded as operating in a specialized nursing category and has become a crucial factor in potential solutions to the worsening nursing shortage.

Becoming a travel nurse opens the door to a world of possibilities. Agencies that specialize in travel nurse placement will help locate a variety of travel nurse positions in areas of the U.S in which candidates have an interest. A travel nurse assignment will normally last for about 90 days but may continue for up to six months. After selecting the region or state the nurse then must decide which travel nurse position to accept. It is entirely up to the candidate which type of program and which type of medical facility they will join on a travel nurse assignment.

The compensation for a travel nurse is well above average and is attracting more nurses into the travel nurse profession. What’s more, the travel nurse package may include complimentary housing. Plus, travel expenses may also be covered. A travel nurse will also receive generous benefits such as health insurance or a retirement plan, if they are working with a good travel nurse agency

Most travel nurse assignments provide a substantial bonus upon completion of a tour. The collective compensation for a travel nurse is far greater than permanent, local nursing positions. In many cases being a travel nurse can result in a six figure annual income.

Considering the severe nursing shortage, a qualified nurse can fill a crucial need and be handsomely compensated for it.

Diabetes Survey Reveals Significant Lack Of Awareness

If you think you know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, you may be in for a surprise.

Experts say nearly 80 percent of Americans do not know the differences between the two dangerous and deadly diseases.

This was one of the key findings of a recent nationwide survey that demonstrated the need for increased public education about the disease.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by Medtronic, Inc., showed that almost half of respondents were also unaware that two distinct forms of diabetes existed.

“The diabetes community has speculated for some time about the public’s poor understanding of type 1 diabetes. These survey results unfortunately confirm our fears,” said Francine Kaufman, M.D., director of the Comprehensive Childhood Diabetes Center and head of the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

The results of the survey reinforce how little Americans understand about the challenges experienced by the more than 1 million people with type 1 diabetes. To help, a new Web site was created, RealDiabetesControl.com, to provide easy-to-understand information about diabetes and the therapies available to patients.

“The public needs to understand that type 1 diabetes is a lifelong disease that occurs most often in children, as well as adults. It has nothing to do with diet or lack of exercise, and its treatment is often very different from that of type 2, requiring daily intensive insulin therapy to maintain a normal quality of life,” said Dr. Kaufman.

The survey also found that nearly 70 percent of people incorrectly believed a cure existed for type 1 diabetes. The majority of people thought proper diet (25 percent), weight loss (18 percent), exercise (22 percent), insulin (16 percent) or other medication (12 percent) were ways patients could cure their type 1 diabetes.

These misunderstandings confirm many of the myths people associate with the disease. They also draw attention away from the need for intensive insulin management for type 1 patients to reduce the likelihood of long-term complications. Some of the most advanced treatment options available for patients include insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.

In order to dispel the myths of type 1 diabetes and raise awareness of available treatment options, Medtronic is also funding a series of educational events across the nation this summer. These local events will educate interested individuals about type 1 diabetes and how treatments can improve health outcomes and quality of life for patients.

Surveys For Cash – How To Find The Right Survey Sites Which Actually Pay Well

If you are going to work at home, completing surveys for cash is one of the best ways to earn a substantial and easy income. You don’t need to worry about paying a large financial investment in order to get started. You just have to have the willingness to go out and find the survey jobs that you need in order to meet your income target. Spending time to learn the tips and tricks of the industry may seem difficult at first, but soon you will be locating and completing profitable surveys regularly. Here are some places to look for surveys that can be completed in return for cash.

Online Listing Sites

The easiest and most obvious place to look in order to find surveys for cash is at one or more of the many online listing sites. These sites may require payment of a subscription fee in order to provide the latest and most comprehensive information, or they may be totally free and gain their financial support by advertising or by assessing the businesses listing the surveys a listing fee. Either way, you gain the benefit of numerous potential jobs in one location online. This allows you to find the ones that work best for you.

Television or Radio Ads

Occasionally, there are ads placed on television or radio to ask for people who are willing to complete surveys for cash. These surveys are usually completed in conjunction with health or illness related projects and may include testing of drugs, treatment methods or other modalities. For example, studies on depression, obesity or diabetes may be looking for people to participate in the programs or projects. Payment may include compensation for time spent, travel expenses, free medications or placebos, counseling, or other benefits. People participate for the cash they receive, but it may also be a way to get treatment for certain kinds of disorders.

College or University Bulletin Boards

Another way to find out about surveys for cash is to look on college or university bulletin boards. This type of survey is often connected with a research project of a student or faculty member. Grants, fellowships and scholarships at many educational facilities may depend on published research projects by the student or professor. In other instances, the project may be commenced simply because the person wants to test a theory or find out more about a favorite subject. Notices asking for those who are interested in participating can be found online or at physical bulletin boards.

Contact Businesses

In order to find and complete surveys for cash, you may be successful in locating options by contacting businesses directly, either online or by telephone. The Benefits of Paid Surveys for Survey Respondents – the Real Story (Part II)

Paid surveys have both critics and adorers, but the truth is up to having a personal experience with taking surveys. Whereas some propagate that paid surveys are a budget-problem-solver, others totally discourage their audiences from trying paid surveys. What is the real story about paid surveys?

Previously, I talked about the exaggerations of some writers on paid surveys about what to expect from taking surveys in terms of cash. But how about the critics? There are many authors who have produced very harsh criticism towards paid surveys and their benefits to people. Many such authors argue they have previously taken paid surveys, but have been either totally disappointed by the cash earnings, or have been cajoled into a scam scheme.

Of course, both situations are very possible. Some people believe that they will make substantial earnings with paid surveys, but end up earning $50 or $100 per month, and drop taking surveys. Also, others may fall victim of scam sites that require potential survey takers to pay fees that are either never recovered through cash earnings, or don’t entail any meaningful service. Reporting these cases is essential to protect other from falling victim of illegitimate paid survey sites.

If you have unrealistic expectations about paid surveys, then you will really be discouraged to learn that paid surveys won’t buy you a yacht or a summer house. Some survey takers find it better to save their cash earnings for a bigger purchase; others prefer to afford smaller but regular purchases. Even though one month you can make $50, while another – $500 or more, you might expect your income to vary, and cannot rely on paid surveys for all your living expenses. If you regard paid survey cash as a bonus, and show some persistence with the survey companies you select, you will enjoy both the process of taking surveys and the corresponding rewards.

The true benefits of paid surveys are that they don’t confine you to a particular schedule or routine; everything is optional – you might or might not take individual surveys; you can take surveys anytime from practically everywhere. The tangible and intangible benefits of paid surveys are to a great extent a matter of your own expectations. Anyway, a positive attitude and some persistence with paid surveys will certainly be rewarding both for your mood and your budget.
