Additionally, Muttville offers senior-friendly home modifications, providing and installing needed improvements free of charge. These improvements can include doggie doors, baby gates, bed ramps, and sofa steps, making a new life together easier for dogs and humans alike.

Among the other grants Doris Day Animal Foundation has provided are funding for college scholarships, programs to aid senior citizens care for their pets, programs for rescue dogs, Kevlar vests for service dogs, rescues of greyhounds, run-sheds for horses, reduced adoption fees for seniors adopting senior pets, wildlife sanctuary assistance, and reduced cost spay/neuter programs as well as a feral cat TNR program, to name but a few.

US Federal Contractor Registration Reminds Grant Applicants to Verify Their CCR Registration

US Federal Contractor Registration Reminds Grant Applicants to Verify Their CCR Registration

St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) November 24, 2011

US Federal Contractor Registration has announced that all applicants for Federal grants or other forms of financial assistance must complete their CCR registration first. The announcement was made on the third party registration firm’s Government Contracting Tips blog on Wednesday, November 23, 2011.

According to the USASpending website, over $ 97 billion in grants and financial assistance payments have been made since October 1st, 2011 alone. The highest payments have been made in the states of New York, Texas and California.

The federal government awards grants for a variety of reasons, such as for education or temporary housing assistance. Many of the grants available from the federal government are listed on the Grants.gov website. In order to qualify for federal grants or payments, applicants must first obtain a DUNS number and complete their CCR registration. As of August 9th, 2011, any submission received from an applicant who does not have a current and valid CCR registration will be automatically rejected.

US Federal Contractor Registration is urging applicants to complete their CCR Registration as early as possible in order to avoid costly delays. Even a simple update of an existing CCR registration can take 24 hours to process; a new CCR registration can take even longer, especially if there are errors in the submitted data. Just like government contracts, available grants have deadlines for applications to be submitted. In nearly all cases, late submissions are not accepted so if an organization misses the deadline they’ll also miss out on free money from the government.

The Georgia Tech Procurement Assistance Center has estimated that nearly 20% of CCR records errors or omissions. It is extremely important that organizations’ CCR registrations are complete and accurate. Failure to complete and maintain the required government registrations can result in payment delays or disqualification for grant awards. Serious errors may even result in fines or punitive action.

In order to help organizations avoid missing out on grant opportunities, US Federal Contractor Registration offers free verification of CCR registration for businesses and other organizations. Information about current grant and government contracting opportunities is also available. Interested groups can contact the Contractor Helpline for more information at (877) 252-2700 ext 1.

US Federal Contractor Registration is a third party registration firm that has helped thousands of organizations complete their CCR registration and apply for grants. US Federal Contractor Registration pairs businesses with a dedicated case manager who helps them every step of the way. To request a free evaluation and assessment by a Placement Specialist for your organization, call the Contractor Helpline at 877-252-2700 ext 1 or visit our blog at http://governmentcontractingtips.com/.

Leading Scholars Douglas A. Knight and Amy-Jill Levin Explore the Historical and Literary Forces in the Bible in Their New Book, ‘The Meaning of the Bible’

THE MEANING OF THE BIBLE: What the Jewish Scriptures and Christian Old Testament Can Teach Us by Douglas A. Knight and Amy-Jill Levine

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 08, 2011

Unlikely heroes. Courageous women. Bloody battles. Miraculous triumphs. The Hebrew Scriptures, known also to Christians as the Old Testament and to Jews as the Tanakh, have given the world some of the greatest literature it has ever known. Passed down for centuries through the oral tradition, compiled between 500 and 100 BCE, and finalized around the time of Jesus, the various books of the Hebrew Bible took shape under a variety of authors, cultures, and time periods, influencing the formation of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam alike. In The Meaning of the Bible: What the Jewish Scriptures and Christian Old Testament Can Teach Us (HarperOne; November 2011; $ 29.99; Hardcover), leading biblical scholars Douglas Knight and Amy-Jill Levine open our eyes to this diverse history, shedding new meaning on the Bible’s long-celebrated texts.

Knight and Levine provide readers with the tools to decode Biblical texts and demonstrate the nuanced ways in which the Hebrew Scriptures have shaped society, past and present. They highlight the Biblical themes with which readers continue to wrestle in the modern day: human evil and God’s response; war and peace; law and society; politics and economics; belief and practice; gender and sexuality; Israel and the Nations; practical wisdom and apocalyptic vision.

The Meaning of the Bible will fascinate observant Jews, faithful Christians, world historians, and readers of great literature. Knight and Levine illuminate one of the greatest collections of literature known to humankind, whose stories are as illuminating today as they were 2,500 years ago.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Douglas A. Knight is Drucilla Moore Buffington Professor of Hebrew Bible and Professor of Jewish Studies in the Divinity School, College of Arts and Science, Graduate Department of Religion, and Program in Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He received a B.A. from Ottawa University (Ottawa, KS), M.Div. from California Baptist Theological Seminary (Covina, CA), and Dr.theol. from Georg-August-Universität (Göttingen, Germany). He has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Program, the National Science Foundation, the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, and the German Academic Exchange Service. He also received the Thomas Jefferson Award from Vanderbilt University. Professor Knight’s most recent books include Law, Power, and Justice in Ancient Israel (Westminster John Knox Press), Rediscovering the Traditions of Israel, 3rd edition (Society of Biblical Literature), and the edited series Library of Ancient Israel (Westminster John Knox Press).

Amy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at the Divinity School, College of Arts and Science, Graduate Department of Religion, and Program in Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN; she is also Affiliated Professor, Woolf Institute, Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, Cambridge UK. Holding a B.A. from Smith College, M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University, and honorary doctorates from the University of Richmond, the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, the University of South Carolina-Upstate, Drury University, and Christian Theological Seminary. Professor Levine has been awarded grants from the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies. Her recent books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus (HarperOne), the edited The Historical Jesus in Context (Princeton), the fourteen-volume edited series Feminist Companions to the New Testament and Early Christian Writings (Continuum), and the edited Jewish Annotated New Testament (Oxford).

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE MEANING OF THE BIBLE

“Amy-Jill Levine and Douglas A. Knight have combined to write a book on the Bible that is as academically brilliant as it is marvelously entertaining. By placing our scriptures into their original Jewish context they have opened up startling and profound new insights. This is a terrific book.”

— John Shelby Spong, author of Re-Claiming the Bible for a Non-Religious World

“Knight and Levine have written a winsome, accessible introduction to the theological thought of the Hebrew Bible. With a congenial exhibit of critical scholarship, they remain, in their thematic approach, at a descriptive level. But they allow room for and affirm the ways in which the biblical text can fund and form on-going interpretations in faith, both Jewish and Christian. This sort of irenic, thoughtful linkage of criticism and interpretation within a confessing tradition is exactly what we most need in Scripture reading.”

— Walter Brueggemann, Professor Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary

“From its superb introduction to its perfectly worded conclusion, this book does it all. Whether your interest in the Bible is historical or literary, specific texts or broad themes, this book has it—and conveys its relevance for today. The authors are learned, respected scholars who, above all, in giving their perspectives and interpretations, write clearly. Their uncomplicated, attractive style makes learning a pleasure. I recommend this book for general readers, for students, for teachers – well, basically, for everybody.”

— Richard Elliott Friedman, author of Who Wrote the Bible? and The Bible Now

“A helpful resource for both Jews and Christians, conservatives and liberals, religious leaders and social reformers. Its authors provide new knowledge on the Bible’s rich diversity of teaching on sexuality, familial and ethnic discord, political corruption, religious infidelity, economic exploitation as well as the nature of God, faith, love, and social justice. It is both enlightening and inspiring.”

— Peter J. Paris, the Elmer G. Homrighausen Professor of Christian Social Ethics, Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary

“A book we have needed for years – learned and accessible, clearly organized by the topics readers care about, and fully engaged with current discussions of deep and broad significance. It will ‘work’ everywhere and with everyone, Jews and Christians, committed or curious, in and out of the classroom. Knight and Levine know what they are talking about, and just as important, know how to talk about it.”

— William Brosend, Executive Director, the Episcopal Preaching Foundation

“If anyone thinks the fruit of biblical scholarship is esoteric and heavy reading, direct that person to this book. In it, Knight and Levine demonstrate both their scholarly proficiency and their expertise as seasoned educators. Unlike traditional introductions that focus primarily on historical, literary, or theological aspects of the Bible, here the material is treated thematically, with important historical, literary, and theological data woven together, thus revealing the rich yet complex character of the various themes. Despite the volume of information gathered in these pages, the authors have managed to present it in a style that is eminently readable without minimizing its multifaceted character. This book should appeal to a broad audience.”

— Dianne Bergant, CSA, Catholic Theological Union

“At last we have a text rich in information, creative in approach, and accessible to students and general readers of the Bible. Knight and Levine have done a marvelous job of taking very sophisticated material and presenting it in an illuminating and thoroughly engaging way that bespeaks of excellent scholarship by two distinguished teachers. I look forward to using this superb volume in my own Biblical Traditions and Cultures course.”

— Carol J. Depsey, OP, Ph.D, Professor of Theology, University of Portland, and author of Reading the Bible, Transforming Conflict

Grading Obama and the GOP Hopefuls on their Plans for Jobs and the Economy

Last week’s GOP debate at the Reagan Library, followed the next night by the President’s address to Congress, throw into stark relief the strengths and weaknesses of each side’s understanding of job creation and the economy. The Republican hopefuls get a gentleman’s C on the impact of regulation on economic activity. But their approaches to the overall economy and job creation ranged from silly to dangerous, and earn them all F’s. The President has to produce results, and his ideas aren’t constrained by primary challengers. This may help explain why his approaches are broader and more thoughtful, earning him a solid B on the overall economy and an A-minus on job creation.

All of the Republican hopefuls — the two leaders Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, the so-serious minded Jon Huntsman and Ron Paul, and the media-infatuated Michelle Bachmann and the rest — agree on one economic prescription: Apply deep and immediate budget cuts to an economy generating little growth and no jobs. This common position not only defies the basic dynamics of supply and demand in a slow economy. It also rejects the policies of the last five GOP presidents. After all, it was true-blue conservatives Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush who justified big spending increases for defense and big tax cuts to boost the flagging economies of their own times.

Nor are the Republican wanna-be’s chastened by the current examples of Germany, France and Britain, which all embarked on austerity programs this year while the European Central Bank (ECB) raised EU interest rates. The results have been even more anemic growth than our own. In fact, the two GOP frontrunners along with the inimitable Mr. Paul not only demanded deep spending cuts, but also sided with the ECB by denouncing Fed chairman Ben Bernanke as an inflationist. The markets they all claim to worship don’t see it that way, since our long-term interest rates remain near record lows. For their determined contempt of elementary macroeconomics, all of the GOP putative presidents flunk.

The current President at least appreciates that this economy needs a boost, not more headwinds. His package adds $ 450 billion over 12 months, in theory adding new demand equal to 3 percentage points of GDP.  In practice, it would work out to be less than that, since people will save some of the money they gain from lower payroll taxes, and some of the tax cuts for businesses won’t be taken up.  The administration also gets credit for recognizing that the sick housing market is a critical piece of the puzzle behind the slow economy. Their answer, however, missed a basic point: Mr. Obama called for expediting Fannie Mae refinancings to put more money in the pockets of some homeowners. That’s all for the good, but it won’t affect the more economically consequential, high foreclosure rates that have been pushing down housing values, and so dampening people’s willingness to spend.  On balance, give the President’s economic team a solid B on the overall economy.

Both sides also call for tax cuts to spur job creation. All of the GOP candidates, however, focus on cutting corporate taxes. Now, most economists agree that the corporate tax cries out for reforms, especially a lower marginal rate tied to ending distorting tax breaks for favored industries.  But no reputable economist who doesn’t aspire to a top position in the next GOP administration has found that those reforms would have noticeable effects on jobs in any short or medium-term. And with large U.S. businesses already holding some $ 1 trillion in banked profits, by what other economic logic would additional tax cuts move them to create jobs?

The only route from this GOP position to new jobs depends on lower corporate taxes translating into higher dividends, mainly for the very affluent, which they would then spend and so boost demand. Even so, much of those additional dividends probably would be saved, which wouldn’t create any jobs under today’s conditions. Moreover, the GOP hopefuls also insist on spending cuts to offset lower corporate tax revenues — and that would mean job losses. For their resolute ignorance of labor economics and public finance, these hopefuls score another F.

President Obama’s tax plan is both more detailed and better targeted to creating jobs. First, he would reduce the cost to businesses of creating new jobs and maintaining their current workers. To do this, he would temporarily suspend the employer side of the payroll tax for new hires by firms with about 1,000 employees or less, and temporarily cut by half all employer-side payroll taxes for firms with about 100 workers or less. This strategy is eminently sensible — and downright brilliant compared to the broad corporate tax cut championed by the Republican hopefuls. Full disclosure: I’ve urged the administration to propose cutting the employer side of the payroll tax for new hires since October 2009, including a dozen times in these blog essays.

The administration’s decision to limit these new tax incentives to small and medium-size companies is less than ideal, since big businesses employ nearly half of all U.S. workers. On the other hand, big businesses are sitting on hundreds of billions of dollars in banked profits, so they clearly have the means to hire more workers. On balance, these proposals deserve an A-minus.

The same score goes to the President’s call for more job-related, direct federal spending. This includes new funds for the states to prevent more layoffs of teachers, police and firefighters; new support for school construction; and additional investments in infrastructure (through a National Infrastructure Bank).  The jobs benefits from other parts of the plan may be more problematic, including the President’s otherwise sensible support for expanded access to high-speed wireless and public-private partnerships to rehab homes and businesses. There’s also little direct jobs benefit in the administration’s laudable plans to reform the unemployment insurance system and bar employers from discriminating in hiring against long-term jobless people. All told, another A-minus.

The Republican hopefuls still have time to develop better strategies for growth and jobs, especially compared to their current dismal positions. They’ll have to play catch-up, however, because President Obama has proposed a sound new jobs agenda. And if congressional Republicans refuse to work with him on it, the President can ensure that the public will know whom to blame.

With Colleges and University Terms Now Underway, From-Mom Announces Their Super SMART Packs, The Quick And Easy Way To Order College Care Packages

Genoa, IL (PRWEB) September 11, 2007

All across the country, students are starting or returning to college. Many of these students are hopeful that their parents and family members will send back to school gifts or college care packages to help make the transition back to school a little easier.

“I gave my mom lots of hints that I wanted a back to school gift to arrive at my dorm. Nothing beats a college care package filled with treats, goodies and snacks to help me with all my late night study sessions,” comments Amber Duke from Ashford University.

Amber’s mom took the hint and has already signed up for From Mom’s new SMART Packs. “A friend told me about the great back to school gifts available From Mom,” Jacqueline Duke said. “I went to the From Mom website and discovered the SMART Pack Club, which allows me to order the entire school years worth of care packages! The Pack includes a back to school welcome care package, so Amber’s wishes will be fulfilled and she’ll be extra surprised when the college care packages keep on coming,” Duke concludes.

Proprietor Cheryl Scordato has thousands of parents across the country who appreciate how easy she makes it to order care packages filled with items students love. “Our Smart Pack program includes our most popular care packages at a great price. We introduced the program because we wanted to make it even easier on busy parents to save time and money. Now all they have to do is order once and they get to send love and snacks throughout the school year,” Scordato exclaims.

Scordato started the unique business after she had three kids in college and realized that she spend countless hours searching for unique food products and feeling guilty about not having time to bake homemade treats. She figured that other parents must have the same feelings and decided to launch her business concentrating solely on college care packages. With a large variety of college care packages to choose from, busy parents are encouraged to visit the site and surprise the college student they love with a back to school gift ‘From Mom’.

ABOUT FROM-MOM.COM:

From-Mom.Com offers unique care packages filled with homemade baked goods, great sweets, snacks and beverages ideal for gifts for all occasions and exceptionally good for college care packages.
